It's been in my family for a long time, and with a locker, 30" tires, crawler gears, and a 4" lift it is the most ridiculously capable vehicle, until I try to drive it on a paved road. The Samy in your video must have 35's or 36's on it, I'm guessing you had to move the front axle forward? I love seeing these little things being used properly, and I find it interesting how much most modern 4wd SUV's need to be modified to keep up with even a stock Samurai.
Sean Mcintyre you just gotta open her up let her breath. Like new carb/ exhaust. That 1.3 will surprise you, mine did. Plus you can cam them or put flat top pistons get a little more out of them. And don’t forget about gears put some good gears in that T case. Like I said that little motor will surprise you.
I’ve heard of people swapping Toyota axles under the Sami’s, that might be a better bet in the long run. No idea if you can swap in the Vitara diffs, though.
I’m running 33/13.50/15 interco tsl swampers on my 88 sammi with 10 inches of lift and after we swapped gears for 4.11’s it runs and drives like a stock samurai on road. With a long tube header ,Weber carb and msd 6al ignition box I have put off swapping in the 1.3 vw diesel because of how well it runs . Plus nothing sounds better than the stock motor singing wide open .

I believe they came stock with 1.3-liter engines. Something like 65-ish horsepower, I could be wrong though.

Guys did you know that you should put about 5-8 psi and no 20-30 psi in terrain like this?!
They are kinda crappy A/T tires too. A true off road tire and correct air pressure would greatly help.

Are those 35s? If you have driven it on the road how is the road manners with that setup?
It has 33's. It does fine on road. Max speed is only 55~ though

Depends what your idea of off-roading is. Sammys do fairly well stock. These circumstances are deliberately made to tear up a vehicle.

Stay with a 15" wheel so you can air down when needed for traction &softer ride imo I have 33X10.50 X15 on my Sammy 5.125:1 gears from Trac/Kick
