We all knew the only reason Sting went solo was his ego. His solo material sounded just like The Police music anyway, so it had to only be his ego that caused the band to split. Like @funguseater, we saw right through the fog and realized it was Sting's ego that broke apart The Police and we had no need to keep listening to Sting when he had left his bandmates out on the proverbial curb.

I enjoyed the funky, blusey sound of the particular band that night, bought them several rounds and afterwards gave the band a hand loading up their equiptment into a U-Haul trailer. Of course their break out hit 'Roxanne' would conquer the air waves for me to realize who it was I helped that night months earlier.
IT'S STING! I never knew R.E.M. opened for The Police at Shea. My dad loved both and loved the Mets, he was expecting me at the time so couldn't make it.
I first started listening to the radio in Summer of ‘84 and I remember hearing Sting and not knowing much about The Police. Thought this song was called “Beach Street”. I also liked “Love Is The Seventh Wave”, which has been mostly forgotten by everyone except his fans.
@ I didn’t notice that until sometime around 1999. Love Is A Seventh Wave never got much airplay after 85. But thankfully Napster became available to acquire all the forgotten classics.
Synchronicity Tour was my first concert at age 15. It was at the old Met Center in Bloomington where my high school graduation ceremony was and which is now the cite of an IKEA across the street from the Mall Of America. The beginning of so many good times I had there seeing Ratt, BOC, Foreigner, Pat Travers, Rush, and others. I was blessed to live 2 miles from the best concert venue in Minnesota.
I was always a huge Police fan and enjoy every one of their albums. I was quite sad when I realized that they were done (I was probably about 11 or 12 at the time). When they briefly got back together and did the tour in 2008, it was awesome and I was happy that I was finally old enough to go see them. It was an amazing show and lived up to all of my expectations. I'll forever be grateful that they did that tour and I continue to enjoy their albums from start to finish.
Dream of the Blue Turtles is one of my favorite 80s albums. I have 3 copies in different formats. The record from 1985, a CD. and Mobile Fidelity recording.
@@RBS_yes those mofis are great we had about a dozen of them sold 07 the only sting record i had was bring on the night double live today just have fields of gold cd comp. we saw sting live up close friends older brother got us was the tour dada opened they rocked seemed a odd opening act for stings jazzy band
I remember watching the Conspiracy of Hope concert on TV. A defining moment was when The Police were singing, and they took off their instruments and passed them to U2. To many, this was their way of saying goodbye and passing the torch to U2.
It's been great to see the growth of the channel, Adam. I believe you've pretty much interviewed all my favorites. My top 4 are Jack Blades, Howard Jones, and Nik Kershaw, and Ed Roland. I can't imagine the honor...what was it like?
I saw The Police during their reunion tour in February of 2008 in Macau at the Venetian Arena. An absolutely amazing show! It was on Chinese New Year day, so Sting tried his best at saying Happy New Year in Chinese. Not bad, actually. Not bad. Cheers!
Dream of the Blue Turtles was one of the first albums (on cassette at the time) I ever bought and my first major concert was during Sting's first solo tour. What a great band he assembled. More then 30 years later I saw Daryl Jones a second time when I finally saw the Stones live😉
I got to see Sting in the Dream of the Blue Turtles tour when i was a freshman in high school. It was just a small hall in Eppleheim, Germany. I just brought my wife to see him this summer at Busch Stadium in St. louis almost exactly 39 years later. He’s just awesome in small and large venues still
"DJ's Sound City" record shops in local malls allowed you to listen to a record before you bought it. There was a "black light poster" room in the one at Seattle's Northgate Mall that was trippy as heck. 😉💯 I love your stories about the music 🎶 that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘. One of my first concerts as a teen w/friends was Sting and "Nothing Like the Sun" at the Boston Garden on Feb. 5, 1988. As I may have written before, I distinctly remember how I felt w/the opening song "Lazarus Heart". Unfortunately, I was too young to see The Police before they broke up, and I missed their reunion tour when I lived in LA in adulthood. Now here back in the Boston area, I had to see him when he came to MGM on Oct. 6, 2024 (to bookend seeing Andy Summers on Jun. 5 at the start of the summer and in my own small hometown, no less). In addition to Sting's vast catalogue of songs solo and w/The Police, he played "LH" and brought back the awe and hope I felt at 16, like I was a part of something bigger in those shared moments. Also pretty cool, he mentioned how the band got their start in the U.S. just down the street at "The Rat". Since then, I've been listening to more of Sting's albums again, such as "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" (and some Bach) w/nostalgia but also renewed appreciation.
❤. A thumbs up and love for the show and your time, but I'm out on this one. Sting... I can't even... Ew! LOL. Sorry. I hope you have a fabulous day!!!! 😊
I saw Eddie Grant on the bus when I was in Barbados a few years back ... Just when I was thinking this experience couldn't get anymore interesting on hops Eddie in an absolute downpour in the middle of nowhere ....😆
So, I got every American rock/pop K-tel album that came out and I remember King of Pain was on one and Wrapped Around your Finger on another. Those were my 2 favorite songs by them. Did you ever decide on doing an episode on K-tel?
The saying was popular in the 70s; I remember it from a poster that was part of pop culture at the time. From memory: "If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it's yours. If it doesn't, it never was."
Very fortunate to see The Police at 4 stages of their career....Dec79 June 81...Dec 83...Sept 07. Wrapped Around Your Finger really reminds me of a great year of my life..83/4. One of the greatest ever bands.
thats, great i waa able attend ghost and sync tours i still have the official 83 full sized tourbook 07 a friend was looking into tickets about a hundred mile drive bit i was going to england at the same time so missed out same andy summers was nearby a few months ago for music and art exhibit but couldnt go
The Police were the first group I ever bought all their albums. (U2, REM, Van Halen, and the Cure also were in that list at one point in time or another.) I liked Stings first two or three solo albums. Stewart's The Rhythmatist was enjoyable, and I enjoyed XYZ by Andy Summers as well as his two albums with Robert Fripp. Those three musicians will always hold a place in my heart as they were one of the first bands where I enjoyed all their album tracks as much as the singles.
Animal Logic with Stewart Copeland is an awesome band with the song “I Won’t Be Sleeping Anymore” that might have Andy Summers on guitar. Definitely worth checking out.
I got to see the Dream of the Blue Turtles tour and it was fantastic…then I saw Sting multiple times, but was so bummed I never got to see The Police. All three of these guys are incredibly musically talented!
It was kind of funny. I had an instinct that today's upload would have something to do with Sting when I saw a thumbnail of Stewart Copeland in my TH-cam feed. Sting is one of those musicians who I might even have figured out when I was 5 years old and this song was new was meant to have the type of career that he had. I was aware of the Police, *Synchronicity* being my first taste of them. As I was finishing preschool and first remember hearing "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free", I was able to identify his voice from those Police tunes. Nobody in single digits like I was would have been able to figure out any of the behind the scenes information when a new police record simply didn't appear, it made sense that Sting had moved on. What's more, *The Dream of the Blue Turtles* has become one of my favorite albums. It was not until I became a teenager that I related to how he had written "Set Them Free" specifically as a sequel to "Every Breath You Take". That became clear to me while I was in my first relationship, a relationship with somebody who did try to possess and control me. After moving on from that particular tryst, I realized the mistake I had made in letting it take shape that way since then, I have sort of pine when I observe the way other people's relationships have taken the same form. What's more, I wound up turning my attention in 2022 to this novel series called The Forsyte Saga. The subject of possessive and jealous relationships is at the core of those books.
Every breath you take..what an awesome song. This is the ultimate stalker tune. 😂 I play it every time I stalk someone. 😅 I'm just kidding....not every time.😂 I would love ❤️ to see the professor's t-shirt collection. 😊
Synchronicity was my very first concert. UB40 opened and no one was sitting when they were done. We danced the whole night until it was over. And this one concert hooked me into craving more live shows. I’m sad my parents never allowed me to go to concerts and I had to wait until I was in college. I missed so many excellent shows :( but I made up by going to so many great shows including Sting’s Dream of the Blue Turtle tour. Another dance all night show.
Stewart Copeland's solo work is amazing. He does things rhythmically (obviously) and melodically that I've never heard before (or since, by anyone else).
I liked the sentiment and the lyric of If You Love Somebody Set them Free. However, I did not feel the music in my body the way i did with the music of Every Breath You Take. If You Love Somebody... is a cerebral track. The Dream of the Blue Turtles as an album is a masterpiece in intelligent, literate and humanist song writing with a rock, classical, world and jazz fusion. My favourite songs are Shadows in the Rain followed by Moon Over Bourbon Street. It is still the Sting solo album I would play the most. His solo body of work is still extraordinary but completely different from The Police. The Police are still my favourite rock band of all time but I completely accept that as human beings they all had to move on. Another excellent upload. Thanks.
One of my absolute favorite bands! I’m just disappointed that I never got to see them in concert. But I’m glad that Sting is still around making great music!
The album Synchronicity was such a favourite for me, but having listened to The Police for years I had a feeling that this would be the last album before they broke up. I absolutely boycotted Sting’s solo efforts for years because I was upset, but eventually softened to Dream of the Blue Turtles. It’s an amazing album.
the only time I ever heard a radio DJ stop a song in the middle to announce they just received a new song and they don't want to wait to play it was for this song. This was June of 85.
🙂 I use to go to 5 different record stores in a 3 mile radius. Who else did that raise your 😊 Wasn't Sting the primary writer of the band 👉 Voted in the 2002 Songwriters Hall of Fame....Why not do it alone. 🤗 "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" ❤❤❤
Sting and the Police are among my favorite listening's. Close to my heart was their song is Every Breath you take. And that is because at the time I was married to a real abusive bully and when that song played on the radio I would change the lyrics slightly and sing Every Breath I take is a mistake.
I was and am a huge fan of The Police. I even got to meet Sting backstage once. I still listen to their music. I've always wanted to know what the line "Its a big enough umbrella" is a reference to.
I said this before when "Every Breather you Take" first came out the DJs had to talk for 10 seconds into the song so cassettes could not be made and sold. The tour was opened by Flock of Seagulls and The Fixx.
Can't mention the 80s without including the Police and Sting. Speaking of those songs that make you stop everything and listen, I remember driving when 'Message in a Bottle' cane on the radio. I got off the road and parked to llisten.
Great video once again! But I can't help but to wonder: You had an interview with Sting, yet you didn't ask him about camping out in front of that musician's house? Feels like a missed opportunity, I mean, no better source for the truth of that story than the man involved, right?
I don't know about "antidote" but I always thought that "Don't Stand So Close to Me" was the flipside or the opposition to "Every Breath..." I so miss The Police, but on the other hand, I can't tell you how excited I was the first time Stewart Copeland's name caught my eye in some music's credits, or when Sting turned up in the movie Dune! They're still out there, doing their thing, and so they should be. Like the former members of Led Zeppelin. We may miss the bands like crazy, but they never signed up to be performing monkeys for the satisfaction of their fans all their lives. We just cherish what they left us, and wish them well.
I went to a police concert in leixlip castle county Dublin in 1980. A band called U2 were on the list, I never heard of them. They had a big following. Sting played his weird bass guitar. I went to giants stadium new jersey in 1986, police were playing, and U2 were the main act!! Both great events. U2s live aid performance in 1985 made them global.
Saw Sting in concert in 1996, excellent solo career. Not sure if you have a hidden gem category for your show. Songs from a successful album/CD release that should have been in the top ten on the chart, but did not chart that high. From Dream of the Blue Turtle would be Russians for example. Keep up the good work, Professor!
Loved The Police! Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity along with some of the singles from earlier albums remain on my all time favorites list. While I also enjoy some of his solo work, it wasn’t quite the same.
when i was going through the same reggae period everyone goes through love is the seventh wave was my and my girlfriend at the time's favorite song, then i heard metallica at work for the first time and it just killed the reggae for me
The Police are one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time; however I despised Stings solo music! Still do....and still have The Police in top 5 of all times
...let's do it first... *HEY, WHAT'S ON YOUR SHELF, PROF.!?* (cont.) The Police - Synchronicity Amy Winehouse - Back In Black (Vinyl Edition) Tom Jones - Greatest Hits (1971 version) The Doors - Waiting For The Sun Ultravox - Vienna (...oops, I forgot it's not self-titled...) "West Side Story" Soundtrack (...no judgement, I have "Xandau"! ...ha-HAAA!)
I dug Stings solo albums right till Mercury Falling. Couldn’t really get into that. I was bummed when The Police broke up but after hearing the remake of Don’t Stand I was ok with it. If that’s what they were gonna do. Break up. However On Stings Nothing Like the Sun album, there’s a song called Lazarus Heart that has Andy Summers playing on it. IF THAT was what they could have produced I would have been on board with a reunion. we got 5 classic albums. Maybe that was as good as it was ever going to get.
Poll: What is your pick for the best "NO SKIP ALBUM" of all time?
Sonic Temple

I love that song...especially when he sings "EVERY CAKE YOU BAKE!
@ I didn’t notice that until sometime around 1999. Love Is A Seventh Wave never got much airplay after 85. But thankfully Napster became available to acquire all the forgotten classics.
Love is the Seventh Wave has a cool ending!
What a GREAT FIRST!
@@ProfessorofRock $12 ticket although it was behind the stage.
Great music and great people on The Police. The Synchronicity album would be a candidate for my desert island list :)
Every song is good. No skip album.
@@ProfessorofRock Making a desert island list is hard as it is impossible to select just ten. But this one could be one of those :)
That is their best album in my opinion.
@@AnnaTrail-xp8pr Agreed :)
Federated, Circuit City and Incredible Universe Electronics....major cd stores as well :)
Dream of the Blue Turtles is one of my favorite 80s albums. I have 3 copies in different formats.
The record from 1985, a CD. and Mobile Fidelity recording.
Very cool! Great record!

What’s your favorite song on it?
@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Love Is the Seventh Wave. Second track.
Stuart Copeland is one of my favorite drummers of all time.
Very cool!
Thank you so much for this video I had to check if I had added these songs to my Spotify list!
He’s just awesome in small and large venues still
Great video Professor - all the best for the year ahead!
"DJ's Sound City" record shops in local malls allowed you to listen to a record before you bought it. There was a "black light poster" room in the one at Seattle's Northgate Mall that was trippy as heck. 😉💯
I love your stories about the music 🎶 that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘.

Thanks for sharing!
❤. A thumbs up and love for the show and your time, but I'm out on this one. Sting... I can't even... Ew! LOL. Sorry.

So, I got every American rock/pop K-tel album that came out and I remember King of Pain was on one and Wrapped Around your Finger on another. Those were my 2 favorite songs by them. Did you ever decide on doing an episode on K-tel?
Yes I will do it! backed up at the moment! But soon.
The saying was popular in the 70s; I remember it from a poster that was part of pop culture at the time. From memory: "If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it's yours. If it doesn't, it never was."
Wish you merry Christmas, I got something special for you Above
Very fortunate to see The Police at 4 stages of their career....Dec79 June 81...Dec 83...Sept 07. Wrapped Around Your Finger really reminds me of a great year of my life..83/4. One of the greatest ever bands.
COol!
thats, great i waa able attend ghost and sync tours i still have the official 83 full sized tourbook 07 a friend was looking into tickets about a hundred mile drive bit i was going to england at the same time so missed out same andy summers was nearby a few months ago for music and art exhibit but couldnt go
The Police were the first group I ever bought all their albums.
I agree! Good call. Clayton!
@
Thank you so much Professor🤘😎🤙
Thanks Eric. AWAYS enjoy your comments!
He has a very distinctive voice.
Stewart Copeland did the theme to the first tv version of “The Equalizer” with Edward Woodward. Love that tune!
That's right!
The Police followed the old Hollywood/Vaudeville saying: Leave them wanting more... another chapter of " if it weren't for egos and pride "...
True!
Every breath you take..what an awesome song. This is the ultimate stalker tune. 😂 I play it every time I stalk someone. 😅 I'm just kidding....not every time.😂 I would love ❤️ to see the professor's t-shirt collection. 😊
He must be have a whole room full. I have 62 and they take up 2 drawers.
Thanks Thomas!

Thanks for sharing!
Great shirt Adam!!
Thanks!
Stewart Copeland's solo work is amazing. He does things rhythmically (obviously) and melodically that I've never heard before (or since, by anyone else).
I agree!
He’s a drum genius.
@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes, and unique. In The Police songs, I've never heard backing drums like that before.
"Bring on the Night" is a wonderful film.
Love it too!
Thanks.
Thanks for your insight!
Check out Oysterhead with Copeland on drums.

Love the song and wish I'd heard, and understood, its message much earlier in my life! It would have saved me some heartache lol.
One of my absolute favorite bands! I’m just disappointed that I never got to see them in concert. But I’m glad that Sting is still around making great music!
For sure! Thanks Elizabeth!
I hope Sting is still playing somewhere.
Such a great band. I still listen to this day. ❤❤❤
the only time I ever heard a radio DJ stop a song in the middle to announce they just received a new song and they don't want to wait to play it was for this song. This was June of 85.
🙂 I use to go to 5 different record stores in a 3 mile radius. Who else did that raise your
😊 Wasn't Sting the primary writer of the band 👉 Voted in the 2002 Songwriters Hall of Fame....Why not do it alone.

Thanks for the comment Robert!
Sting and the Police are among my favorite listening's. Close to my heart was their song is Every Breath you take. And that is because at the time I was married to a real abusive bully and when that song played on the radio I would change the lyrics slightly and sing Every Breath I take is a mistake.
Thanks!
King of pain was beautiful..and I always was sad when I heard Every breath you take was more obsessive than romantic.

@ProfessorofRock Yes, excellent track!

Wow!
I remember when Roxanne was released. I had never heard anything like it. Several years later I saw them live with UB 40 as the opening act.
Was lucky enough to see The Police with Elvis Costello in Milwaukee. It was a little tense on stage, but they sounded great, and EC was amazing!
Sounds like an unforgettable show! Why was it tense!
@@ProfessorofRock It just didn't seem like they were getting along well that night, but like I said, they still sounded great lol
I think that EC had beef with Sting previously, which could account for the tension.
