I've had Sonar 8, X1 - X3. Every time I invested, I felt that the next edition had better explanations. So, what was lacking? was it me or the product. It was neither, it was lacking MIke!. Your understanding and ability to verbalize that understanding is brilliant. Yes, Sonar made a good DAW, but Band lab with Mike has made it possible for the average person to use. I was considering ProTools, Arturia, etc. however, with proper instruction, Band lab's Cakewalk meets and exceeds my expectations. Thank you Band Lab for having the insight and daring risk to save cakewalk

I have known about automation for a while--that it exists and a little of what it can be used for. However, learning new features, techniques, etc. has often been a personal stumbling block (initial bump in the road to learning is too steep for my personal "shock absorbers.") The 3 or 4 videos in this series I have seen so far match my personal learning style in a number of ways--such as internal pacing/flow of ideas presented, balance of basic novice and more advanced beginner-to-intermediate concepts, visual presentation, etc. When the video gets to my overload/saturation point, I can bookmark it and re-watch it later with the first part serving to reinforce what I picked up the first (or second) time-->>without having to suffer through the failings of an unprofessional, overly rambling/backtracking style often found in other tutorials. Others may like those, but as I said, your mode of content presentation agrees with my personal learning style. Others might have issues (e.g., you used ______ instead of _____), but these videos work for me. Thanks!!
I am a very old dog just getting back into the world of DAWs, and this is phenomenal. I started with Cakewalk on MS-DOS and things have gotten a bit more complicated :), but this video absolutely demystifies this particular topic and makes me optimistic that I can pick up the rest. I'm in the same boat. I started with Sonar 8.5 studio, then upgraded to Sonar X3 studio. But I was just doing the most basic recording and was kind of flying blind. I gave up on it for several years and now getting back into it with Cbb. Mike's videos are such a great help. I'm trying just to learn a little bit day by day so I don't overwhelm myself and forget everything. I'm still amazed that Bandlab is providing this software for free. I'm wondering what their business model is going forward.

Great tutorial, very useful. I just published a few weeks ago a new album and I recorded it and mixed it all with Cakewalk. It's an excellent DAW. I've bee using Cubase for 15+ years, but couldn't afford a new one after my old PC died (and Cubase with it). Cakewalk has all the necessary features to do most of the job and EVERYTHING FOR FREE, when Cubase and the other DAWs are ridiculously expensive!
Man thats unfortunate to read, could`nt you extract old installers from your SystemHDD of your dead PC? Or maybe write some mails to the product supplyers, they can surely help you. I bought a new laptop 1 month ago and even if it was a pain in the ass, i could get running almost everything on the new hardware. Now i got my plugins on the old studio pc and on the go with my laptop :) I hope this information can help you a little bit . Besides that, Cakewalk ist awesome, its since Sonar 6 my main DAW and still today. I can use all my old Sonar Plugins on it and even if the Bandlab version has not the old full package, a CW starter can go with some bought or free plugins and produce everything with it.

Extremely helpful to sort out automation. I am wondering how to eliminate automation from a mix when it is unwanted. I find once it's there, it is hard to get rid of....
I have the Bias FX 2 plugin and tried the automation write on one of the controls (to change the frequency) but there's nothing moving when I play it again and "Read" is turned on, I also see no curve when "recording" the automation. Is it possible that it's not working with some vst's although I can enable the "write" button above?

Is there another way you can do that effect automation but by manually recording a new track or something? So lets say I have a drum midi playing with an effect over it and while it's playing, I'm adjusting the knobs on the effect to get a changing sound and recording that new sound. Hi, yes absolutely! By default the master bus, and other busses are hidden in the track view. But if you look towards the bottom left of the track view, you will see a kind of eject icon. Clicking on this reveals the busses. Then you can get access to the automation tracks as you would any other. Hope that helps!
Is there anyway you can automate the FX on a bus ? (i have 4 vocal tracks all bused to one vocal bus which houses the vocal plug-ins and i want to automate an element inside that plug-in)
Hi Willard, I tend to prefer those elements of sound such as volume and panning to console automation, or the final audio of the element controlled midi (virtual or real instrument). For me its just a preference of no mixing up concepts. MIDI in itself makes no actual 'sound', but gives instructions to something that makes sound. So I prefer just to let MIDI control, notes, note duration, sustain, modulation etc etc.

Hi, thanks for watching. I'd suggest that if you have already setup automation, then have the vocals go through to a bus, and adjust the overall sound there!
Kinda late, but if you haven't figured it out yet, I can help. In the piano roll window, you can do crazy hihat and snare trap patterns by pressing "t" and using the "paintbrush" tool. In the top right of the piano roll view window there's a little square grid box that allows you to input the note start times *and* durations (8th, 16th, 32nd, 64th, etc) that you'd like to use. You can make all kinds of cool hihat patterns like they do in trap music, but I don't think you can alter the pitch in the piano roll view (which is kind of a drawback). Although the workaround for that is to create a "pitch" automation envelope and just draw it in with "nodes" (just like he shows you in this video here). Hope that helps. 👍

Hi RoSo, as far as I know, the automation can only be shown on the lane of the track its applied to. This includes bus lanes (which can be viewed by clicking the little 'Eject' icon at the bottom of the track view).
Very helpful video, indeed. Do you know if it's possible to automate soft synth velocity? Say if you want to do a drum roll that gradually increases in velocity. Haven't figured out how to do that, except for changing velocity on the individual drum notes, which of course, is a pain in the ass. :p
How do you change the colour of the automation lines please, mine were yellow but have changed to dark green for some reason, they are now quite difficult to see.
I had been using Sonar 8 before switching to Cakewalk and Sonars volume automation worked as a plus or minus of whatever the fader was currently set to, which allowed me to still raise or lower the overall volume of the track. Is there a way to do that in cakewalk? I either bounce the track with the automation or send it to it's own bus, but I like being able to adjust the overall track volume if I need to. Is there an easier way?
Good point, it's a useful thing to do. I would suggest that sending it to It's own bus would solve the problem most elegantly. Bouncing it feels to permanent for my liking!
Hi Alex. At the bottom of the track view, there is a little button, which looks a little like an eject icon. That shows/hides the track lanes for busses.

You brought my attention to the RW on the top right and now I am able to write automation in real time! Thanks Mike!! But how can I get that automation into its own lane rather than on top of the clip?
Hi RoSo, as far as I know, the automation can only be shown on the lane of the track its applied to. This includes bus lanes (which can be viewed by clicking the little 'Eject' icon at the bottom of the track view).
There is a little button on each clip to turn on the automation lanes below the clip instead of having them right over the clip.
So what the sine tool, saw and square tool does?

Very helpful video, indeed. Do you know if it's possible to automate soft synth velocity? Say if you want to do a drum roll that gradually increases in velocity. Haven't figured out how to do that, except for changing velocity on the individual drum notes, which of course, is a pain in the ass. :p

I was trying to automate a bus and couldn’t, so I guess it’s not possible. I haven’t tried to research it more.

I had been using Sonar 8 before switching to Cakewalk and Sonars volume automation worked as a plus or minus of whatever the fader was currently set to, which allowed me to still raise or lower the overall volume of the track. Is there a way to do that in cakewalk? I either bounce the track with the automation or send it to it's own bus, but I like being able to adjust the overall track volume if I need to. Is there an easier way?
Good point, it's a useful thing to do. I would suggest that sending it to It's own bus would solve the problem most elegantly. Bouncing it feels to permanent for my liking!
Or just a simple volume plugin should be inserted on the channel and automate that value.
Or if I understand maybe tweaking the clip gain knob at the top of each channel strip? Sounds like you’re trying to gain stage maybe.
