Bits controlling hardware is friggin cool, thanks for this high level overview, something which is missing in most arduino tutorials and have you scratching your head when you see a bitmask, but makes more sense when you know whats going on with the hardware. I think beginner tutorials should have you blinking an led using resgisters and even making your own delay function using the built in timer modules or interrupts to emphasize more how the CPU really works.
