That’s a direct reference to Revelation chapter 6 if you didn’t already know…as is the bit about the opening of the fourth seal, the sun turning back, mountains and islands moving from their place and the sky being rolled up like a scroll.
I love the juxtapositioning of hebrew and arabic, which carries it's own signifiers. The direct call to Israel is also relevant, given the situation in the middle east. That line translates to God being one in the same, the line shows a difference in language, culture - though the belief is the same. The line is a neighbour, much like Israel and it's counterparts. It flows into one another, and the way Aaron delivers it is pure and humble and peaceful. The band as well heightens this feeling of peace in that moment. The pulling of the guitar distortions, piano - a sense of silence and vibration at the same time. I see MewithoutYou as a body of work, something to sit and analyse, and something to sit back and to just listen to.
It just really feels like they've gone back to their best sound, and that goes double for this track and Red Cow/Dorothy. The guitar riff at around 3:21 is so rough and nasty sounding (...which I personally love) - brilliant song, brilliant album, and brilliant band.
This is majesty performed! I have been a huge fan of mewithoutyou since A/B Life. This is by far their best song. Beyond description. Ineffable. I can listen to it on repeat and only enjoy it more every time. Incredible!
I didnt expect to have feelings today. I still have no idea what the message is Is it about his father? Is it religious? Both? Idk Ill just listen to it a million more times till i get it Edit. My mom killed herself. I get it now
The key line to understanding the song is the lines: "god gave Noah the rainbow sign, no more water it's the h bomb next time" This is referencing where the bible explained the rainbow was Gods promise to man he would never flood the world again. So the implication is the world will end with the h bomb next time instead of by gods flood. Essentially meaning man has usurped gods power when we became capable of destroying the world ourselves. In the context of the song Aaron feels like his world has been essentially destroyed as this is mostly about the death of his father.
i heard in an interview that aaron had 10+ themes he wanted to cover in this album, from his wedding and fathers death all the way to the apocolypse. instead of writing seperate songs for each things, he mixed these themes in the lyrics to all the songs on this album. this is why the themes often change from one verse to the next.

The emotion this invokes…I can count on one hand the number of songs that hit me as hard as this one.
What an unbelievable end to an amazing album.

Why is it that to know love we must also know sadness? This whole album is a journey and not one recommended to take alone.
maybe i'm hearing things but at 4:55 i hear what i imagine to be his father saying "baby boy" and it cuts deep every time.

I think this is my all-time favorite of all their songs.
Same.

MWY legit did not get as much credit as they deserved, music is an art THEN there is Mewithoutyou.
Although it makes me sad, it is a warm feeling that calms me, amazing
lyrics are so personal yet so relatable especially historically.
This might be my favorite mewithoutYou song.
It’s mine. For sure.
This is such a beautiful song. I feel the steps we go through during the loss of a loved one with this song
Love this. Yip did a fantastic job on production as always

“Wielding the Sanctified Sword, for the army of the SCARECROW LORD (Jesus)”
is one of the most hardcore lines of all time.

How am I supposed to work if I'm crying???
I just came across this And it blew my mind. But I'm curious to know what this is even about?
end of the world
Whoa now
I didnt expect to have feelings today.
I still have no idea what the message is
Is it about his father? Is it religious? Both? Idk
Ill just listen to it a million more times till i get it
Edit. My mom killed herself. I get it now
It's about his dad dying. Aaron uses a lot of religious imagery in his words. There's a lot of references to the end of the world in this song.
Yea

I am just here to get my face melted off. Don't mind me.
Pale horse songs of a slow decline
Sideshow words if the songs don't mind
God gave Noah the rainbow sign
No more water, is the H-Bomb next time?
Pale horse vows in a grave reply
Smile for the camera at a church' nearby
Threw a mute curse at the Boise sky
For my fucked up Napolean of St. Helena hairline
Black horse leaping when the frogs withdrew
The parable of the plums where the olives grew
Clouded rearrangement of sounds we knew:
An Idaho sunset for my own private Waterloo
Pale horse songs of a slow decline
Side show words if our moms don't mind:
Cloud gave no one a rainbow sign
Six-point starred ink flag next time?
שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל ה' אֱלֹהֵינוּ ה' אֶחָד قل هو الله احد الله الصمد
With imperial crowns we were sent,
Riding out conquest-bent
Daylight is breaking
Wielding the sanctified sword
For the army of the Scarecrow Lord
Daylight is breaking
Balancing scales at our feet
Measuring out two pounds of barley, six pounds of buckwheat
Beasts of the Battersea Shield
At the opening of the fourth seal
The sky, I'd been told
Would roll up like a scroll
As the mountains and islands moved from their place
And the sun would turn black
As a dead raven's back
But there'd be nowhere to hide
From the Judge's face
After which message-less birds take flight without cause
To the silence they've heard in the absence of laws
Or imperial crowns: Unsent, unsigned
The other night I dreamt I was finally out of college
In my own pair of sandals, I had turned into my father
Whistling my tune about the Rio Grande
Like an anchorite in June I took hold of my own hand
And started on the Abrahamic joke we knew
About apostrophes and pronouns and you remember who
But let's keep that silly punchline between me and you
Little Haroon and the man in the moon.
HOW THE FUCK DOES THIS SONG EXIST?
Huh?
Corona virus anthem...
Good music but its not for me. I can't take the beginning seriously because the vocals sound like an Owen Wilson impression.
Aaron is a poet. It's technically spoken word. But it's done is such a beautiful way!!
