    The location along the river is likely the reason for the European currency. I'd guess the river had travel options for those who weren't local.

    I like the new "fade in" to help us see the details on coins. And the Roman coin is a glorious find. It has been there for so long just waiting for someone to pick it up. Wouldn't that last owner of the coin be incredulous at what the world looks and acts like now?!?

    I also like when you superimpose a clear coin image to see what the coin looked like.

    The figure ont the French coin is Marianne. She is "the national personification of the French Republic since the French Revolution, as a personification of liberty, equality, fraternity and reason, as well as a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty." Only time I found coins from everywhere in France was on a military hospital site from WW1.

    • @ricois3
      @ricois3 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Many don't know that Lady Liberty in the US, is based on the French Marianne. She's on some coins, and obviously the Statue of Liberty.

    The black coating on the coins is ferrous oxide deposition due to galvanic corrosion. When you put two different metals in moist soil, next to each other, they act like a battery. The coin is basically being electroplated by the iron in the soil. It makes a very good protective coating, especially for copper.

    The clasp, with the little glass rhinestones, looks a lot like one I found in my Great Aunt Margaret's sewing box that I inherited. Hers appeared to be gold tone over brass and I suspected it was from the 1920's, but it could have been older. So you were right it is about 100 years old. I think you call it a sash clasp.

    The large brass object could be the top of a poker that had a square end iron rod inserted. The brass object with a person on is a horse brass. The top would have taken the strap. The Thing that had the catch and the inserted decoration is either a ladies or child's belt clip or the clip for a ladies bag. Another great day.

      haha my local pub is over 300 years old, my local church (Felkirk) was first recorded in 1120 but is much older, it also has a school alongside it built in the 1590s. Within about 5-10 miles of my house i have 3 monastries (Nostell, Monk Bretton and Pontefract), 2 castles (Sandal Wakefield & Pontefract), and then we have a Roman fort at Castleford, a Saxon stronghold in Brierley and a bronze age settlement in South Kirkby. And thats just scratching the surface lol

    No wonder you like that field! Great finds. I am still thinking about that lead St Andrews mold. I remember when I was in the army in Southern Germany and visited museums, they had beeswax impressions from wooden molds, I saw some beeswax impressions that were a couple of hundred years old. Being the Catholic part of Germany, I also saw little wooden pocket Saint's shrines that could be for travel or opened up in a house. Maybe that is the sort of thing was turned out at a church workshop for pilgrims to buy and carry. (Beeswax wouldn't last long in the part of the US I live in (too hot) but should do find in cooler climates like Scotland.

    I don’t know if it’s common in Scotland, but in England it was common for unneeded soldiers uniforms after a conscripted war to be ploughed into the fields. I found several “souvenirs” that would have been sewn into the tunic lining as lucky charms, keeping the soldier safe while enforcing the empire. That’s how I found an 1850’s Chinese coin in a field near York.

    Another cracking video, John. We love the way you share your knowledge of dates etc. Such an inspiration, mate. From another metal detectorist (Bexleyheath) who doesn’t know any land owners yet 😢. I’ll persevere😊

    Well John , what a day for you,... Great starting it was your finding day full of nice coins. I also think that roman coin is a A P , and it is always one amazing feeling every time we dig and find a denarius. Can't wait to see the 2nd part. Best regards mate.

      @@thescottishdetectorist Hard call. It's your coin. You'll never sell it. Isn't it really your business what you do with it. Just don't say anything, and you won't p--ss off the purists. LOL
