I had a crush on a girl throughout high school. She was beautiful no doubt, but I realize now that the only reason I was infatuated with her was because she played the french horn.

My senior yr of HS our band director took several band members to a music reading clinic at a nearby university, where band directors listen to new band music and hopefully buy it. They placed me at 2nd horn in the band, next to a gorgeous girl who played 1st. (I still recall her name.) I had a crush on her for a couple of yrs until I met other horn players in college.

When I was in high school, I played a couple instruments, including string bass. The orchestra normally practiced without the woodwinds and brass until a concert was approaching. We played this symphony for several weeks, and it was very boring until the day the other players arrived and realized this piece had a melody. It was like watering a garden all summer, and finally seeing a flower bloom!

The principal horn has the luxury of having an assistant who plays the tutti parts, giving the soloist a rest. That last horn solo that floats up to high B is damn hard to do if you have no assistant to play the monotonous parts throughout the entire symphony. Many community orchestras do not have the luxury of providing an assistant to the principal. It is damn hard on the principal playing these symphonies without one.

I played this several times with an excellent community orchestra back in the ‘70s. As you said, no assistant. I really didn’t have a problem but I wasn’t 65 at the time as was John Cerminaro when this was recorded. Even at 65 he, IMO, was better than most of the younger pros today!

start off by buying a mouth piece and practice buzzing on it. you can do sirens, practice your low and high buzzes, and it will also help you build endurance since playing for long periods of time can be very tiring.

The Hans Hoyer Heritage 6801/6802/7801/7802 are great replacements for the old 8D. They were modeled after the vintage 8D. The 6801 has the mechanical 3B valves, I have and love my 6801 NS (nickel/detached bell). Best horn I have ever owned! Huge sound!! I've played this symphony many times on it, and the solo near there end just sings right out on it. ♥️
