    Nicely done - it would be interesting to know how long it takes for soil to clog the holes but I like the fact you can just remove the pipe and clean it, Even here in London we need irrigation in the summer ( but not the famous winter!). Very helpful as I’m about to plant 5 mature trees and it will be easy to instal a couple of pipes at the same time.

      Thank you! I’ve been using it since making the video and thus far, no clogging! Doing it at the same time as plant will be perfect! Keep the pipes about 24” long, with 3-4 sticking up above ground. Let me know how it goes!

      @@lucianod6161 Thanks- that solved the clogging issue - pleased to say your solution has proved invaluable. My trees are very healthy despite a very long dry period. i also bought some worms and introduced those to the new soil as there were none present. That will help with the mulching in winter. Good luck to all.....

    If you stick a 24 in moisture meter stick near the tree on 3-4 sides which creates thin holes in the soil prior to watering, does that help with getting water to the roots, if someone did not want to do a drip irrigation and decides to water newly planted thuja green giant trees?

    What is the benefit?
    Have lots of mulch to minimize evaporation and water from the service so all roots are watered.

    Definitely a great idea. I want to water elder berry so I am thinking 1' long pipe with no cap on end.
    I wonder how many ounces the pipe will hold, maybe 2' pipe and only drainage holes in the 1/3 bottom of pipe so it can hold several ounces of water. Hmm... Any suggestions?
    Elder berry are a shallow rooted plant so I don't need a deep pipe.
    Thanks for the information.

      Thank you! I would recommend doing two 1.5' long on either sides, this way the roots get water evenly vs just one side. Let me know how it works out!

      @@desertgreenthumb4539 I like the idea of doing two. Since the plants are 4" apart it would benefit all the roots because they will spread 8'-12' when mature.
      I'm curious, how long should the tubes be used? Is it for the first few years or for the life of the tree? Ty

    • @desertgreenthumb4539
      @desertgreenthumb4539  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, You can leave that to personal choice. Since I drilled holes about 1.5 inches from the bottom, there wont be much stagnant water siting in there, and you can easily flush the system by putting a hose into it.. if needed.

      @@desertgreenthumb4539 copy, so I tried it with no cap and seems like the water won’t stay at the top, seems like it’s like going straight through the bottom. Maybe I should add the cap? How long is the water usually supposed to stay inside?

      @@Repla12481 Gotcha! A happy medium could be try with cap and drill just one hole at the end of it. This way the water can slowly exit vs flowing right through it. I water my trees about every 3-4 days, but havent checked in-between waterings if there is any minor water sitting stagnant at the bottom (Mine are about two feet long and it would be hard to see to the bottom.)

    Shouldn't water your trees that close to the trunk. As it matures in size you should be watering it further and further away from the trunk. Watering by the trunk causes root rot from the roots chasing the water and never growing away from the tree.

      There is no advantage to watering wide. Leads to shallow roots and wastes water. Not ideal in a small yard. Much rather have deep roots.
