Resilient plants that survived against all odds

  • A lot of plants have died in the last 3 months… this is due to a violent move that not only saw them suddenly change environments, but also covered in dust for over 3 months and placed in wrong positions. They also received the wrong care at times… as I spent a lot of time for work travel and hospitals… However, against all odds, a lot of plants did do well. In this episode, we celebrate these plants that are survivors. Luck definitely plays a huge role, but their resilience could not be discounted as well! Its safe to assume that these plants can easily withstand sudden changes in environment and care. You will meet some interesting plants in this episode that I bet you have never seen before!

    Thanks Sean, yes, it has been so cold -- almost -40 -- here in the northern hemisphere, so it's great that you are sharing your topical vibe with us. Indeed, your plant-wall plants are looking strong and healthy, loving their new home. I think they like the more controlled environment. Maybe less moisture causing fungal issues, and maybe less pest issues. Soon you will have a gorgeous wall covered in beautiful climbers. We'll all see how beautiful your aroids will eventually become at maturity.

    Hi Sean! We have hostas here in NJ but they have to freeze and die back each year. I am preparing to move to Florida and I am told they won't live in that climate so I won't bring them. One thing about the hostas here, they spread quickly. They grow into large clumps and also will throw seed. I know there are tropical hostas, but I don't know if they share that growth habit. If yours is a hosta, it seems sort of lonely. I am so happy to see that you have successfully created a fantastic environment for your plants! I know it was a lot of distress, but in the end.... it is awesome.

    your jose buono is so funny. also you should do more feature videos when you chop and prop stuff, because i find myself searching for those videos on specific plants. so far, lime fiddle, joepii, longilobatum, spiritus sancti, jose buono. i know your plant-specific wisdom would help and your content is generally great stuff, esp compared to other channels that lack care content. what most people look for is concise care instructions because they've just bought the plant, which you put out in an enjoyable manner.

    Amazing to see your huge Leea Amabilis and hear you call it easy to grow, apparently easier than hoyas in your environment. Here in Europe it's a super rare terrarium plant and people are proud of keeping a tiny one alive in a terrarium, I've never seen anyone own one as big as yours even in pictures. Hoyas are considered easy and undemanding in comparison.

    • @onlyplants

    Love your green wall and your channel. So interesting to see all the wonderful things you grow.
    That first plant does look like a Hosta plantiginea var. grandiflora - some call it an August Lily. I have them all around the house I live in, as here they are perennial landscape plants that die back in late fall, come back in early spring. They have beautiful lily like white blooms with a strong fragrance. In SW Ontario, Canada they bloom around late August. I have some in full shade in my little woodland garden out my stoop which flower sporadically, and others in part shade out front which receive morning light that bloom like nutso. They can handle full sun, but they never look quite as happy. Water wise, they are quite hardy, and take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.
    They are one of my favourite Hostas, as I love that Kelly Green, the large leaves, and the blooms are quite lovely, with a beautiful heady scent.

    I'm wondering why we cannot get seeds from all these plants, it would be 10x more ecologic to send seeds rather than full size plants from Thailand for instance. Has anyone got an underground tropical seeds shop? I used to work in a cactus shop 20 years back and we could get seeds from anywhere accessing 5x more species than with grown plants.

    • @RusticRaver
      @RusticRaver ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe you could sponsore your channel with seed sales!? seeds gathered locally since you are in the spot.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting idea… some species seed more readily than others. And germination has a high rate of failure too as each species has different conditions of germination. For one, I would never buy seeds because I havent got the patience to germinate them. Also, this mignt create opportunity for dishonest sellers to sell fake seeds…
