Henri Mulet (1878-1967): Toccata „Tu es petra“
Mulet wurde 1878 in Paris geboren, wo sein Vater Gabriel Chorleiter an der Basilika Sacré-Cœur war. Ab 1890 erhielt er Musikunterricht am Pariser Conservatoire. Zu seinen Lehrern gehörten Alexandre Guilmant und Charles-Marie Widor. Er wollte ursprünglich Cellist werden, wirkte aber später als Organist an St-Pierre-de-Montrouge und unterrichtete an der École Niedermeyer und an der Schola Cantorum in Paris. Von 1922 bis 1937 war er Organist an St-Philippe-du-Roule (Orgel von Cavaillé-Coll-Mutin 1903, umgebaut von Abbey 1922, III/P/40). In wirtschaftlicher Not vernichtete Mulet 1937 all seine Manuskripte und viele seiner Besitztümer und verließ Paris, um nach Draguignan (Provence) umzuziehen. Dort war er bis 1958 als Organist der Kathedrale tätig und lebte in Armut. Aufgrund einer Krankheit zog er sich mit seiner Frau in ein Kloster in Draguignan zurück, wo er 1967 starb.
Mulets bekannteste Werke sind für Orgel geschrieben: die „Byzantinischen Skizzen“ (komponiert zwischen 1914 und 1919) und das „Carillon-Sortie“ (1912). Die „Skizzen“ sind eine Sammlung von zehn Stücken, geschrieben als eine Huldigung an den romanisch-byzantinischen Baustil der Basilica Sacré-Cœur. Der zehnte und letzte Satz, der am häufigsten gespielt wird, ist eine Toccata mit dem Titel "Tu es petra et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus te" (Du bist der Fels, und die Tore der Hölle werden sich nicht gegen dich durchsetzen).
Im Matthäus-Evangelium (16:18) sagt Jesus zu Petrus: „Du bist Petrus und auf diesem Felsen werde ich meine Kirche bauen und die Tore der Hölle werden sich nicht dagegen durchsetzen". Mulet macht mit diesem Werk symbolisch Sacré-Cœur zum Felsen, der den Toren der Hölle standhalten wird. Diese Toccata ist noch heute eines der großen Standardwerke der französisch-romantischen Orgelmusik.

Mulet was born in 1878 in Paris, where his father Gabriel was choirmaster of the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1890, where his teachers included Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. He originally intended to be a cellist, but later served as an organist at St-Pierre-de-Montrouge and also taught at the École Niedermeyer and the Schola Cantorum in Paris. From 1922 to 1937 he was organist at St-Philippe-du-Roule (organ built by Cavaillé-Coll-Mutin in 1903, rebuilt by Abbey 1922, III/P/40). In 1937, Mulet, following a financial crisis, destroyed his manuscripts and many of his possessions and left Paris for Draguignan (Provence). There he continued as cathedral organist until 1958, often in poverty. Ill-health led Mulet and his wife to retire to a convent in Draguignan, where he died in 1967.
Mulet's most notable works are for organ: the „Esquisses Byzantines“ (composed between 1914 and 1919) and the „Carillon-Sortie“ (1912). The former, a set of ten pieces, is a recollection of the Romano-Byzantine architectural style of Sacré-Cœur. The tenth and last movement, most often played, is a toccata entitled "Tu es petra et portæ inferi non prævalebunt adversus te“ (You are the rock and the gates of hell shall not prevail against you). In Matthew's gospel (16:18), Jesus says to Peter: “You are Peter and on this rock I shall build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it). Mulet rewrites the Latin and makes Sacré-Cœur the rock that will withstand the gates of hell. This Toccata has been called "one of the great showpieces of French Romantic organ music".
