- Sunflowers are an AMAZING companion plant for your vegetable garden. Let's talk about some of the main reasons you should be growing sunflowers:
Sunflowers attract aphids! They pull all of the aphids in your garden to a central location where the lady bugs and praying mantis can have a feast.
Sunflowers till the soil. They pull trace minerals up from deep in the soil with their tap root and loosen the top soil making planing other crops much better
Sunflowers create shade.
Sunflowers attract pollinators.
Sunflowers are beautiful!
Sunflowers are a great source of healthy fats.

Sunflowers are pretty drought tolerant. They produce not only seeds, but also stems and roots, i.e., tons of organic matter.
My garden is 1/4 flowers etc and 3/4 veggies , I do grow sunflowers for the heads as just a color thing , birds get the seeds but i buy five foot high varieties and get nine foot plants .

I am growing sun flowers for the first time this year. I love the idea of using sunflowers as a trellis. I just learned about this method a few weeks ago and I am trying it in my own garden. I’m a TH-cam gardener too. I think I may have already messed up. My pole beans and morning glories that I planned to grow up the sunflower and growing so much faster then my sunflowers! Do you have any advice on what I should do now? I may make a trellis out of branches but I’d love to see this work out as is. Thank you for all your help. You have taught me something new. I hope we can continue to support and learn more from each other.
I guess it depends on how far along your suns are… perhaps unwind and stake . Let the suns grow and then let the beans go. Morning glories can be super invasive and grow so quickly I’d be worried they would choke everything out.

Omg! I’m so happy I plan to grow these! I had a horrible aphid problem with a few of my plants last year and tried so many different things. Do they have any good companion plants (I know you mentioned green beans) that I should plant with the sunflowers?
We did a video over the summer about that .... I’ll have to ask MC because I don’t do the gardening 😂 I believe it was squash , corn and melons were some of the ones he did for sure .
