Military recruitment shortfall: Should US bring back the draft? | Morning in America

  • The military hasn't been reaching recruitment goals to refill its ranks, and shortfalls are now impacting some branches more than others. Politicians on both sides agree that military recruitment numbers being down are a concern, and some are now wondering if the return of a national service mandate could fix the problem.

      Excellent, you must have studied WW2. America provides protection for the world so we can have fair trade internationally. The problem is the countries we provide protection for do not pay us. There's also a trade imbalance, so American citizens pay for the difference when other countries do not meet their dues.

    They wonder why people don't want to join the military when politicians and military leadership have started cutting military retirement benefits and pushing "blended retirement" which means less pension upon leaving the military. They have also begun to require retirees to pay larger premiums and co-pays for what used to be free medical for life. If they want more people to join, the politicians and leadership can start by restoring the benefits they began taking away over the years.

      @@FirstNameLastName-mi5uz That's not smart either, because that will breed even more weakness. Have you not seen the results of conscription in Thailand?! These soft lefties would lose their minds and the rest of us would have to hear about it. Furthermore that alone isn't gonna breed strong units. You need discipline, courage (both physically and mentally), you need awareness (which a lot of these new recruits don't have) and you need commitment to the job (not to be misinterpreted as being a lifer). Without STANDARDS, more defense spending would be wasted, organization falls by the wayside and you get left with a broken military. So where is the upside of conscription? I mean for Christ's sake, we literally have a civilian acting as Secretary of the Army right now who never even served (Christine Wormuth).

    • @biggoards2772
      @biggoards2772 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That would be unwise as our military would grow weaker through conscription. Thailand is a great example of this. Furthermore there is still the issue of having a civilian who did not serve as Secretary of the Army (Christine Wormuth). To compound the issue, many resources would have to be spent on just keeping our military in functioning order. I know this from first hand experience dealing with inventory while serving myself. The only way to fix the issue is to return standards to their proper place and remind people that, integrity, honesty, commitment and discipline are important.

    With MHS Genesis that has been around for a couple years now, tons of people are getting denied, some without the possibility of a waiver. I don’t ever hear this being talked about on the media but when I went to MEPS, my group of 11 people all got disqualified for silly shit that has happened years ago. I was denied both from the Marines and Navy for mental illness that happened back in 2013. Although my case was more serious, this was something that happened over 10 years ago and I had proof of no issues since AND 2 years of physically changing myself. I ended up joining the fire service and not even bothering with any other branch. I wouldn’t even want to join now with how the government treats the military; also wouldn’t recommend anyone wasting your time with the process unless you are a perfect person. I would like to add that to be a firefighter, the process is very similar. Aptitude test, physical, psych evaluation… in conclusion I believe this is another issue on why recruitment goals are low.
