I have today heard the expression Sutton Slice, whilst reading about POLYMER clay on the internet. And I have to say that I had absolutely no idea what it was. But after watching this wonderful video I am fully clear on what it is, and how to make one myself. I have been wanting to try this technique for a long time. but haven't found many deeply etched unmounted stamps to try it with. but after lots of shopping I've got a few nice ones to try. so I will remember your video :) I'm a long time fan so I always appreciate all the help and advice you give us fellow clay lovers. Also I was Hobby Lobby the other day and saw the glass cutting mat you have. I jus had to pick it up (later from Michaels because it was ALOT CHEAPER lol) but thanks for the tips! :)

I have been working safer and making round beads and in a month something like this will fit right in with the Christmas jewelry projects i'm heading for. I think this years home made gifts will be some of the best received ever.

I'm following some of your tips such as using a ceramic tile in the oven and I'm baking according to manufacturer's recommendation. Can you help me to avoid these crackings after baking? Turned out very pretty. So, Sculpey III would be an ideal clay to use, because of how soft it is, right? A good way to use up some scraps, to make reverse texture sheets too.
Yeah, SculpeyIII should work pretty well for Sutton SLice. You could useastronger clay like Premo or Souffle as your base and the SculpeyIII for the top. As long as it was stuck really well to the base clay, it should matter too much if it is a more brittle clay.
I may do that, but for now, if you go to my blog at www.polymerclaytutor.com and type skinner blends into the search box, you should see some of the tutorials I have already done on the subject. It would be nice to do a show and tell, showing all the different things I've used blends in though. I'll add it to the list!

Yes definitely! ..Lumina Air dry Polymer clay is a good working clay, but unfortunately it begins to dry like immediately and feels like vinyl when completely dry, I recommend it for those who want to do teeth, claws, or anything small but I'm sure you can come up with something as you are great with experimenting on products, anyway hope to see something on that soon Take care my friend
I did sutton slice once and I forgot to use a release agent for the mold. Even though my clay was soft, it got stuck in the mold permanently and I have had hard time cleaning it out even with acetone and a brush :/ But when I use a release agent, the clay lifts when slicing so that's difficult too.

Thank you for this video. I tried this technique for the first time this week. I made sure to add clay softener to my clay, so it was very soft and sticky. However, the mold is leaching the clay, so by the time I'm ready to roll it into the base sheet (especially if I don't have time to do it all in one sitting), the clay is dry and cracked. Have you heard of this before? Is there anything I can do to the molds to keep them from leaching the clay?

I don't think nail polish remover or acetone would be a very good replacement for the Isopropyl Alcohol or rubbing alcohol... I think it would melt the stamp.
I've found it very difficult to find rubbing alcohol where I live. It comes under many different names (rubbing alcohol, iso-propanol, propan-2-ol, isopropyl alcohol etc). All the stuff I can find where I live is dyed blue as to deter people from drinking it... which can be a problem depending on what you want to use it for (I use mine with alcohol based markers and I worry that any dye in the alcohol would interact with the dyes in the markers.) So, if your country is really strict regarding alcohol consumption, consider that it might be tricky to find! I had to order mine online (ebay or amazon, for example)- the easiest place I could find it. It is fairly cheap on there too, but shipping might be expensive depending on handling requirements
You can use any type of rubber stamp. The majority of what you see in this video are what are known as fondant texturing plates. They make them in such a way that there are no undercuts so you can pull out the clay easily. Look in the baking/cake aisle of the craft store
Well that wouldn't give you a different colored background. That's what's so cool about the Sutton Slice technique. If you wanted the same color, then yes, a roller or stampwould give you a dimensional look.

Oh I see what you mean, the thing with using a roller is that it won't get deep enough into the crevices and it tends to pull out when you push forward with the roller. I find it just works better if you push in the clay with your fingers. But if you find the roller method works better for you, then certainly use that. Thanks for your input!
