    I like M1 style helmets the best. I'm not a big fan of the style of some of the newer style helmets you see in Afgahnistan. I wish they still used helmets to this style today.

    awesome, thanks for the info, the pot has the officer's id in the liner with another vertical bar that's yellow, i think its a complete one, also with the addition of intact fixed bales, that's a nice steel bowl.

    Berlin bear,
    Please forgive my delay in answering but I only just saw this. The HEAT shell you see in the background is actually a dummy that I turned on my wood lathe which I then painted to look like the real thing.

    You are quite correct. Later in the war rear seam M1s were manufactured for combat use.

    Why do the GIs in movies not use their chin straps and Germans use theirs. Is it true that the US strap was dangerous? Take off your head if attached and hit?

    • @DerWeisskunig
      @DerWeisskunig 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeffrey Bull
      Maybe not because it would take of their head but because it would snap their jaw.

    • @dukenukem3059
      @dukenukem3059 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was so the enemy couldnt grab the helmet which would pull their head back then so the guy pulling could slit their throat

    • @hamishdow2188
      @hamishdow2188 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jeffrey Bull it was due to several things while an explosions shockwave couldn't rip a head off if the strap was fastened it could cause serious concussion neck injuries I hear rumours of necks breaking and busted jaws and the like the reason the enemy wore the straps on theirs during ww2 was largely due to the fact they used mainly leather which in the event of getting caught in a shockwave leather would snap easier and the buckles they used would also come free easier as opposed to the heavy duty gear America used

    • @rogersun2197
      @rogersun2197 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeffrey Bull It was believed (falsely) that explosions close by would cause the helmet to spin and the helmet would spin. With the chin strap attached it would snap your neck.

    Awesome collection!!! I recently picked up a Vietnam M1. It is in good shape but has definitely been used. It has a '63 Firestone liner, the webbing is too faded to read the date but is consistent with the '64 to '65 era and it has a Mitchell cover. Interestingly the shell is the old school WW2 fixed bale front seam. The wear is consistent overall/tight fit so I don't think this is a put together show piece. Was it common for them to repurpose WW2 lids?

  • @andrewfox6631

    I was just wondering
    I have a front seam fixed bail helmet with a firestone parachute liner. The chin strap does not fit all the to the back of helmet. It's a short one. How common were short straps. Also the long part of the strap which is supposed to be on the right hand side is on the left.

I year ago got a front seam swivel bale M1with the brown inside to the liner but it had a 4" by 1" vertical hole cut in the front of the liner and I was wondering why that may have been done.

    Mannie, I am a Vietnam War combat veteran. I am making preparations for my eventual funeral and the three helmets I wore as a Warrior during my service. I will have a M-1 helmet on an M-16 rifle, My fighter pilot helmet from when I was in the USAF and my SP-4 "Mickey Mouse helmet while I was a helicopter door gunner. I need some help Mannie. Apparently I have an early WWII M-1 with the brass chin strap attachment points. I bought a chin strap that was advertised as Vietnam but the material is thinner and the clasp has an extra piece in it. I read it may be Dutch surplus? I would like to have a correct one. My helmet liner SHOULD have the leather strap (my Nam one did not). I need a replacement lens for my fight pilot helmet (my wife accidently broke it!) and I could use a replacement clear lens for my Mickey Mouse as well. I am hoping you can point me to a reputable dealer to get the items I need. Contact me and I will send you an e-mail address. Thanking you in advance.

      +James Carmean What was it like living in your generation?

    • @jamescarmean2701
      @jamescarmean2701 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      James W. Starnes A complex question. I was reared with strong Southern values of Honor, Duty, Service to family and Nation and Courage to do the right thing. We experienced the turmoil of a blooming drug culture that damaged America on so many levels of society and National values. Racial strife was agitated with further damage to National feelings of unity as Americans. The democrats strove to split the nation into various racial and political fragments in their own efforts to forge a coalition and gain political dominance. These techniques are clearly outlined in communist doctrine and the socialist handbook "Rules For Radicals" by Saul Alinsky. America was and is being destroyed from within. Relaxed opinions about free sex and abortion on demand further eroded American morality, the school system began to descend into inefficient union support for democrats at any cost by their union bosses contributions of union funds. American Heroes were constantly eroded by leftist college professors and the system of Capitalism was continually under attack, even though it built the colossus of American Freedom, financial strength and unparalleled military might. Poor fiscal policies since then, giving copious quantities of our National Treasure to the many nations that are envious and hate us is beyond stupidity. They hate us but they gleefully line their pockets with our hard earned money from foolish politicians. I could go on but you probably get the picture. I am hard core anti communist, an American Nationalist and aging warrior. Was this reply helpful?

    • @WestTNConfed
      @WestTNConfed 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yes it was! I'm a liberal though, and I support abortion. The reason: 1. If a woman is raped, and the rapist plants his seed in her, then I see justification for it. 2. Population growth is booming to an unstable level, abortion can help this rather than leaving your child. 3. The babies are unconscious, so if the mother is in risk of death or disease, or if the baby will be defected in some way or form, you can end the suffering right there. 4. There can be one big positive from all of these reasoning, and that is where you can use the aborted baby's body parts to restore someone's limbs, or donate it to science.
      What were the music and trends in that day? My grandfather is 61 and he said he use to be a hippy, ate cow mushrooms, smoked pot, etc. (He was "saved" at 21 and stopped all that, including smoking and drinking, the moment he married my grandmother that age.) Was America "better" then? Currently we are doing very poorly with education, but did we have higher educational standards compared to all the other major powers at that time?

    • @jamescarmean2701
      @jamescarmean2701 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as your abortion comments I agree rape and the health of the mother are acceptable exceptions.
      Our rock music was great if you did not allow the message to destroy your belief systems. I even liked the folk music but not the anti-war message. Go figure.
      My Education was outstanding. I had a 160 IQ in the 8th grade and reading on college level then. Our standards were pretty high in my opinion and our teachers dedicated and professional. I had a classical education and my personal love of our early America foundation and the more than wise documents of our Founding Fathers always pointed the way for my beliefs. Read the "Anti-Federalist Papers" as well as the "Federalist Papers"
      Germany, England, Soviet Union and Japan had pretty solid educational systems, in my opinion.

    uggh, this helmet is so horrible, i hated it (and still hate it, i have it in my attic)
    that strange inner and outer thing with all those straps and buckels can drive you crazy and no way what you do, it will keep wiggle-woggling arount atop your head.
    during active service i had some newer thing. some pasgt or something, which was really nice and comfortable.
    sitting tight, nothing moving.
    but when i quitted to reserve, i had to give that back and got that m1 "helmet" instead. what a pitty.
