Thank you for enlightenment of why every time I looked up Bratton camp/iron age fort and all I see is a slight incline above the white horse ❤❤❤

Have been enjoying your Bristol content and then you do this on my chosen doorstop for the last 24 years! 😁 Nice one! It is the passing place of kings and a very lovely and interesting site! Also Hawkwind played a gig up here apparently 😇

Thank you for a refreshing secular and/or mundane take on these things. Why would all of their decisions and Infrastructure be purely sacred or mythological when they had the same needs as any of us?

This channel is gonna grow and it deserves that. I love the dry narration, it's calming but not boring. Although it might not be for everyone i think channels like Lindybeige and Perun but also The Tim Traveller prove that there is love for this kind of video's.
Thank you for the video's! New subscriber.
Greetings from accross The Channel, from the Netherlands.

These videos are fab. I love your mix of pedantry, scepticism and openness to other perspective. It’s very entertaining & i’m learning heaps.

My late uncle by marriage told me that as a child in the 1920s he used to often visit the
Westbury white horse to picnic in its eye!

Never been to see the horse directly. But you can always see it peeking over the hills impressively far away when driving from Radstock to Frome a county over.

I did my third year specialism on Viking Age Britain. Perfectly fine to refer to the Danes as Vikings as they definitely were being vikingr and weren't settling until later, and are still referred to as the Great Heathen Army because it was great in scale and wasn't Christian! They were there to extract wealth from the English (hence where we get the term pounds for the payments given to them in weight).

As a side issue, I've always felt that iron age hillforts were pretty badly located if their main use was for peaceful settlement. Water had to be carried long distances up hill. I'll mostly go for 'fortified places to retreat to in times of threat'. But you are right about lack of evidence of conflict. The only one I know of is the seige of Maiden Castle in Dorset, by the Romans.

I think there is evidence of a Roman attack on Cadbury Castle Hill Fort in Somerset

I agree. I often wonder if a small garrison lived there full time and people gathered there at certain times for ceremony and celebrations and during times of threat.

I remember helping turn it into a unicorn back in 85. There was LSD involved, and (I seem to remember) Hawkwind played all night in the Summer drizzle.

The colour balance seems to have gone very strange during youtube's re-encoding. I'm not sure why, I did everything the same at my end and don't remember this problem on previous videos, but this time it's definitely shifted very noticeably. To be honest I think it looks terrible, but I've no idea what I can do about it, so I've published the video anyway... please reply if you've run into this and/or know how to sort it :)

OK I definitely don't need to bother making that series about all the other white horses, that I mentioned in the outro, because S and J TV1 already have one, check out their excellent vids here th-cam.com/video/Jv6YF9Zu-l0/w-d-xo.html

Early cities all had defensive walls and these early hill towns were no different and had defensive structures. A hill offered two things for an early town, a good view of oncoming raiders from other towns, who's crops had possibly failed, or who needed a new supply of women for breeding purposes. And was much easier to defend when under attack. They were also the places where they would herd all their livestock safe from being taken away when raided. They were never built to keep out a real military force like the Romans.

Great yes please do one on Cherhill white horse (be a good excuse to also talk about the naked highwaymen of the area!)

Big Dick Turpin's eventual identity and capture was all because of his local connections. As for the "Big Dick" nickname, that's just something I made up, and purely speculative. The phrase "Stand and deliver!" takes on a whole new level of hilarity.
      .
      "Who robbed you?" they asked.
"It was Big Dick Turpin Sir"
"How do you know it was him?"

That's a very good video. It takes a lot of effort to script a video. The footage was good - No zooming in and out. Narration was excellent. My only negative comment would be the hand drawn arrows and highlights around text. But then your videos get more views than mine so what do I know. Lol 😂. Drone shots would look great in your videos. You should consider getting one.

    • @PedestrianDiversions

Yeah I'm very tempted to get one I must admit. I have a weird relationship with general production values, on the one hand with my filming I aim for a reasonably high level (by youtube standards, where handheld phone camera stuff is routine, obviously I'm no Roger Deakins), on the other hand I sort of deliberately keep things a bit amateurish, with the scribbly arrows and such, to maintain the impression that this is just a random bloke with a camera and an internet connection, not a professional operation. Feels more honest to me somehow, not sure if it really makes sense! As for views, I drove a fair few via the Bristol subreddit, also my coal canal video went bonkers when the Whitewicks did a video on the topic and youtube decided to show mine to just about everyone who watched theirs, as far as I can tell. it's just luck of the draw with the mysterious Algorhythm sometimes...

I get the thing with the arrows and such. I watched a few more of your vids and figured it might be a deliberate thing and then felt silly for leaving the comment. Ha ha :) I live in Bristol myself. Happy to meet up sometime for a pint if you have any questions about flying a drone :)
