This was not a private function, but it WAS by invitation only. As the title suggests, it's Elvis' 1968 comeback special! Elvis had just gotten out of his movie contracts, and wanted to show the public that he was a lot more of an entertainer than they'd been seeing in his movies ans the songs that came from them.
NBC produced and aired this show. The invited audience member were NBC employees and their families, mostly. They did it this way...in the round, with the audience around him because they felt it was more intimate. Elvis' wife, Priscilla was in the audience too, though she never appeared on screen, as she chose to sit in the back. She showed up at the live portion of the special to help put Elvis at ease.....he was a nervous wreck because he didn't know how he'd be recieved.
The special was taped at NBC studios in Burbank California in June 1968, and aired in early December, the 3rd i believe of that year...that's why he did Blue Christmas. In one of the two "sit down" shows, he did the song Santa Claus is Back in Town.
Originally, Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker (not a real colonel) wanted it to be a christmas special with all Christmas songs. Elvis didn't like that idea, and neither did the show's producer Steve Binder. They all came to the agreement that Elvis would at least do one Christmas song so they could play it at Christmas time, but it could still be run at other times of the year. Before starting the song, Elvis says "Being the time of the year that it is...I'd like to do my favorite Christmas song of all the ones I recorded." Even though it was done in June. 😊

This was supposed to be a xmas special set up by his manager . Elvis changed the format to an intimate setting . He had 2 of his original group from the 50s scotty moore and DJ fontana play along side him

Ok, Elvis must’ve been aware that he was a handsome man. I mean, he HAD to know that much, but do you think he knew HOW FREAKIN HOT he was?? So beautiful? Jeez I’ve never seen a more beautiful person male or female. I dont know how he ever dragged himself away from a mirror.

Only Elvis can sing a Cristmas song like this! He loved to be close with the fans and of course he loved women! In another performance he kissed the girls in the audience. There would never be another one like him!

All you need to do is go to 68 comeback special Elvis and you could watch that entire TV special. It was originally on NBC on December 3, 1968 it was recorded in June 1968 just months after the assassination of MLK RFK and it was the first time he performed in public in almost 10 years. That special on NBC rebooted his whole career

No technology, pyrotechnics or dancers needed. Just the man sitting in a chair singing straight up and the girls go crazy.

It's better than the original of 1957. Now Bre, will you do my request in the near future? It's Patty Loveless doing "Blame It On Your Heart." It's 3:32 long. The channel is PattyLovelessVEVO.
