@@MrShujinJonmichal You need to align the brake pads so they toe-in, meaning that the front of the pad is very slightly closer to the rim than the rear of the pad.
@@derekduchene9242 I had silicone spray on my pads by accident. I soaked them in ispropyl alcohol for 2 days and burnt away the alcohol….still not 100% good again…
@@laser_simon922 once there was WD-40, oil or similar on your pads you can throw them away. Pads soak that stuff up like a sponge. Sometimes, Events discs can‘t be cleaned 100% 🥲
@@derekduchene9242 def dont use wd-40 i learnt the hard way how bad that is. It works to stop the squeaking but it has the effect of also making your brakes useless.
Aligning a caliper: Putting the brakes on will not necessarily align the caliper... It applies the same pressure on both side pots... but if they are not centred already there is no force that will move that caliper left or right unless one pot is sticky... and then things just get worse. So... (note: we're assuming this is a hydraulic system, not a cable one... Personally I would rather run V-Brakes over cable disk on anything other than a slow road ride!!!!!!!!!!) If you loosen the bolts and leave the brakes off, look at the back of the disk rotor where the rotors outside edge enters the caliper... The rotor without any load on it, should be smack in the middle of the gap in the caliper body (don't confuse this with the gap between the pads as they may still be off centre) You should find you can push the caliper left/right and lightly tighten the bolt at one end, then do the same at the other.... the result is the rotor should now be dead centre in line, right through the caliper. Check out the view at 2:52 Once done... tighten the bolts... re check the rotor is still centered (both at the front and back)... and put the brakes on a few times... If everything is good... the rotor should barely (if at all) move when the brakes are applied, and when released - the rotor should be clear of the pads and rotors when the wheel is spun. (This is a good time to make sure the disk isn't warped... it should not 'wobble' back n forth in the gap when the wheel is spinning). If the disk moves sideways you may have a sticking pot (or those god awful cable brakes and you need to manually adjust the static side pad... or cable adjuster... or cable length etc... and some numpty tried to tell me cable disk needed less adjustment than hydraulic... I haven't adjusted mine hydraulic ones in 2.5 years other than fixing a sticky lever piston, and one oil change a couple of weeks ago. (And my Foes lasted nearly 20 years with a couple of changes.. and it runs Olive Oil !!!! and now has a piece of innertube as a bellows... ok u try and get 1998 Magura Gustav parts during covid. So... did I miss anything.... Maybe that you could do a fluid change while your at it... and if your XT lever sticks in.. sanding down the piston works... as per many U-chewb vidieos. Oh...and for glazed pads... don't forget to brake clean them as well, it may have been oil contamination that led to the heat/glazing.
I solved my alignment issue, I get em dead on perfect every time. I drilled and tapped a 3mm hole into the side of the caliper bolt post ... On both sides. I threaded in a 3mm grub screw that adjusts alignment and lock the caliper in place. It can't move when locking down the bolts.... Perfect every time!
Bikespeeds gives us a good analogy. Those dirty rotors with black rings.. are just like vinyl records. The grooves rotate, the brake pads make the music, our forks are speakers and our frames are.. amplifiers!

I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

Thanks, I keep some isopropyl alcohol in a small spray bottle just for cleaning my rotors and brake pads. My bike has SRAM code brakes (4 pistons) and one of the pistons seems lazy. Any tips on how to make the pistons work evenly?
Hey Linda, to solve a sticky piston drop the wheel and pads out, and do your best to hold the other pistons in place while you pump the brake (we tend to use plastic coated tyre levers for this). Be careful though, you want to pump the brake enough to free the piston and bring it out of the body a bit, not fire it out completely and drain the brake of all fluid. Once the inner surface is exposed, clean with isopropyl alcohol and push it back in. Pads and wheel back in, pump the brake to reset the pads and it should be job done!
Hi, i tried everything to stop this annoying noise, I’ve changed the pads with new one, i cleaned the rotors and still have it. I start to think, that my problem is connected with the pads, because the have cooper inside. After longer ride and use they stoped , but on the next ride the noise is still there....maybe I should try with resin pads.

Sounds like some weird feedback through the chain! It could be that your crankset is a little loose or that your chain is super worn and the rollers are vibrating around a bit? It could be other things too but we'd check both of these things first 😅

My deore m6120 have plenty of power. Almost as much as my codeR on my other bike. If you’re fast/ heavy or both, go atleast 200mm rotors front and rear.
New pads, clean rotor & noise free for a day or 2. Then the screeching comes back😂A problem that cannot be solved unless you take the brake completely off and just use the front👍🙂

Anytime I’m starting my ride both front and rear are super loud and not strong at all, I resolve this by braking hard whilst pedalling downhill until the squeaking stops and my brakes work good again, this only works for my rear wheel though and not the front brake, anyone got any tips?
I been chasing brake noise for a while on my older hardtail. Turns out that at my current weight the frame has just enough flex to push the rotor over when I weight the pedals hard to one side or the other
The trail condition is dry and my mtb makes noise when I applied the brakes while going downhill(steep hill) and it is howling noise what does it mean?
If you dont have any liquid to use but for some reason have sandpaper, use the sandpaper on the pad to clear of the dirt or olie... you can also use the sandpaper on the brake disc. I did it a few times and finaly it works but ofc you do lose some of the brake pad.
One thing i like to do if my pads are glazed is to sand them and then also sand the rotors real good too and rebed the brakes usually can go for awhile before pads need to be replaced
I bought a new COTIC BFeMAx and the first ride the next day, the weather was terrible after about 20miles the brakes started squealing but thought nothing of it. When I got home and cleaned it, noticed the rear pads were down to the steel. That's pretty good going for 20 miles on a new bike.

Did the cleaning, sanding and alignment but still squeaks. It kinda boggles my my mind that just using the bike would cause noise on disc brakes: Contamination? So I guess I can only bike in the most pristine of places? Glazing? So I guess I won't slow down until the last second?
Im running shimano slx and xt on two bikes. both have the problem that even after a nice ride with no noises and all i put them in the garage and when i take the bike out the next day or whenever the breaks squeal and breaking power is near to not existant. it takes several minutes and many breaking manoeuvres to get them quite and working again. that cenario continues and repeats itself everytime. what am i missing ? (i tried cleaning with break cleaner and sandpapering the pads already) i`m happy about suggestions
@H27W i am running the original shimano pads. i think they are sintered. unfortunately the weather condition doesn't have a big affect on the issue. i will try out organic pads when the current nes are worn out.

3:51 If the pistons are getting closer to the rotor your lever should not be getting closer to the handlebar (unless, you are using some cheap kind of hydraulic brakes that i don't know of) Hydraulic brake systems have a reservoir that is specifically designed to compensate for pad wear, and that is also one of the reasons why you can't just install new pads in without forcing the oil/DOT fluid into that reservoir.
@@annegrey-blackman5934 I agree. Air in the system could be due to the way you store the bike for long periods of time. Always make sure the reservoirs are placed higher than the calipers to ensure no air pockets can travel in the hoses.
I've never managed to clean contaminated pads. Tried isopropyl alcohol, brake cleaner, acetone and MAP gas to name a few. Has anyone found their pads get contaminated if they don't ride that bike for a while? It's happened to mate's bikes and mine with all makes of pads.

So I put new pads 2 rides ago, and on both rides, as they got heated up the braking power was amazing, butafter one day or less, the brakes squeal and dont work great at all. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?
Personally I'd just use it undiluted, the purer the alcohol the better. Edit: Just to be clear, 80% plus isopropyl is probably overkill but it won't do any damage.

It is possible, but not likely. Unless you lay your bike down in the dust it may squeak a tiny bit otherwise, the dust particles are so small and won't stick very easily the moment you grab the brakes all the dust will be brushed off or will fall off from the micro vibrations your brakes make.
In our experience it definitely contributes! We've done bikepark seasons where constant dusty conditions (and bikepark braking - i.e some dragging in between braking points) form a bit of a glaze on the pad and rotor. Usually solved with sanding of both pad and rotor with a light grit paper.

I've never heard of the first method of lining up a caliper. I just sight em but I'll definitely try that out next time. Would save a lot of back and forth if it works.

howling brakes are sometimes a benifit. Nothing gets dog walkers on a bike only trail out of your way quicker than a set of howling brakes.

The most common reason for brake squeal is "Sram"

In short, no. They look and feel as cheap as they cost. Upgrading from mt420s to SLX callipers has been the best upgrade I’ve made on my bike so far

Get larger brakes and better pads and rotors. Equal pressure on pads and distance from pad to rotor to really fix

Indeed. I would suggest levers getting close to the bar would indicate a leak or air in the system

I've never managed to clean contaminated pads. Tried isopropyl alcohol, brake cleaner, acetone and MAP gas to name a few. Has anyone found their pads get contaminated if they don't ride that bike for a while? It's happened to mate's bikes and mine with all makes of pads.
You can just burn em with a fire torch. Both disc and pads.
Or bake in your oven for 20 min at 200 degrees celcius

I think I have a very unusual problem with my front brake. So I put new pads 2 rides ago, and on both rides, as they got heated up the braking power was amazing, butafter one day or less, the brakes squeal and dont work great at all. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?
Glazed pads, or you cooked the rotor

When using Isopropyl alcohol, do you use it pure or diluted? If yes at which dilution?
Personally I'd just use it undiluted, the purer the alcohol the better.
Edit: Just to be clear, 80% plus isopropyl is probably overkill but it won't do any damage.

Can dust contaminate brakes?
It is possible, but not likely. Unless you lay your bike down in the dust it may squeak a tiny bit otherwise, the dust particles are so small and won't stick very easily the moment you grab the brakes all the dust will be brushed off or will fall off from the micro vibrations your brakes make.

In our experience it definitely contributes! We've done bikepark seasons where constant dusty conditions (and bikepark braking - i.e some dragging in between braking points) form a bit of a glaze on the pad and rotor. Usually solved with sanding of both pad and rotor with a light grit paper.

I've never heard of the first method of lining up a caliper. I just sight em but I'll definitely try that out next time. Would save a lot of back and forth if it works.
Getting some snow into the braking system results to some lovely noise.
Nobody in history ever aligned a caliper by undoing bolts and applying the brake.

Incorrect. I have. Not frequently does the stars align for it but it happens. Hell today upgrading my rotor it was dead on by the automatic way.
Seems like it's just you! However, a combination of both ways always works! Whatever gets the job done :)
