I read the Giver in 3rd grade and its stuck with me into my adulthood the themes are impactful while the language is accessible for the younger target audience.
Currently reading Son for an independent novel study, and honestly so far I just love all the subtle jokes in the series, as well as the awkward naming (ex. Water Claire). It makes the quartet so much more entertaining.
I had the same feelings at the end of Son. Read Giver for the first time as an assigned reading in 8th grade. Read the others and part of Son the next couple years, and I finally picked the series back up after almost 10 years. Still had a million questions (from all four books!) after Son, but it’s one of those series that actually sits well in the tension of things left unknown. It’s meant to be a terse, allegorical commentary on the complexity of the human condition, not a thoroughly fleshed out lore like Harry Potter. Son’s ending had me sitting there for 30 minutes in satisfaction, and longing for a 5th, reflecting on the finished tapestry Lois wove throughout (pun intended lol), all at the same time. Great review! 🙏🏽
I read the first book and then skipped to the third (I was told you could read gathering blue or messenger either way) and I didn’t entirely enjoy the Giver (is seemed quite basic and didn’t seem much different from other dystopians), but my gosh, the story of matty, seer, frolic, and Kira dug deep into me heart. It was one of the best novels I’ve ever read- short and sweet. Looking forward to reading the other two.
its such an underrated series by popculture, I was taught this series in Elementary school and it changed me.
