The orchestration goes nuts and the set design goes very Nosferatu- like minimalism and its wonderful. For example, OG Eve was Weak top 5 villain songs of all time. How can it not be with such gems like "You'll become Satan's bride" "You've got Jezebel's pride and your soul is a hole of disease!" while the Kyrie Eleison is perverted and growing in tempo and fervor?! Also I was really mad at the revival for not keeping "God has seen your sinning just beginning pray for your salvation from damnation! Pray or he will burn you! He will burn YOU!" during Destruction.
RIGHT?!?! I'm glad some revival productions put "God has seen your sinning" back in. For example, the 2015 LA production did that. They even put Chris's extra verse in Do Me a Favour back in! If I directed a production of Carrie, I'd elect putting those back in. OG Eve Was Weak and Evening Prayers were so much better in the original, idk why they messed with them in the revival when they were already perfect. In the 2009 demo the OG versions were still there and it was so interesting hearing Molly and Marin (RIP) singing those versions. And OG In is iconic. I want to learn that choreography.
Actually had it not been for their producer backing out randomly and disappearing, the show likely would have lasted a while longer. The cast recalls that the theatre was packed and nearly sold out if not entirely sold out each performance. I may be wrong but I swear I remember saying that

While I think the production absolutely deserved a better chance than it got, I honestly don't think it would have lasted very much longer even if that producer hadn't cut and run. From its opening, the show was being absolutely eviscerated left and right in reviews and by most accounts, audiences were booing at the end of the show and only clapping at the curtain calls (which, to anyone not in the know, is generally the way an audience signals that they didn't enjoy the show overall but are willing to acknowledge the cast did at least a decent job). A show simply can't keep running for very long on those terms and especially back in the 80s when critical approval still had something of a death-grip on the success of a show. Unless they pulled a "Spiderman Turn Off The Dark" and severely revamped and retooled it, it would probably have closed either way within a couple of months.

i saw you mention that everyone in the show wears white, and i learned why! you might already know but it's a funny story so i will share for anyone who doesn't : okay, so basically i think the directors told their costume guy they wanted costumes like "grease" (so like, 50s skirts and stuff), but he thought they meant greece like the country so that's why everyone is in weird togas and stuff!

yes. yES. I love the edge the original production has to it. This is a controversial opinion but I find the revival very unmemorable, but the original understands the insanity of Stephen King's work a lot better?

Carrie is not a fully psychological horror, but also a story of a girl whose the school seen her as an outcast. The music orchestration, the world outside the Whites and everything else shows so. I feel like if they get rid of the modernistic white sets, weird mashes of costume and go with some full house design (imagine some serious opera, moveable and tiltable sets) while keep the spectacle they want to show off, would it results a better visual overall? Tbh, I feel like original Carrie is a really good resource they had. Only some need some fixing and polishing up (I have seen the unauthorized Emerson college production that keep most songs and the similar direction, and it blew my mind away!). The revival lacks some spirit of Carrie (1976 movie to be exact) the downgraded orchestration to some high school musical and I really need to say this, THE MODERNIZATION IS PURELY UNNECESSARY. Carrie is timeless classic that works the best in its own decades, no need to change it to 2010s horror wannabe.

Technically, this isn't the Original Broadway Cast. This is actually one of the London previews. Yes, it's true that most of the same cast went on to perform in the Broadway production, but that's definitely Barbara Cook in the role of Margaret White. Cook left the show after the London previews were up and was replaced by Betty Buckley for the Broadway run. EDIT: I posted this BEFORE seeing the various scenes with the audio dubbing and comments.

It's such a good way to represent how shut in and doomed all the students are, and to emphasize the tragedy that Sue - the only person who tried to make things right - is completely helpless. I've seen some people say that the idea was for Tommy and Sue to be separated by the curtain trying desperately to reach each other before Carrie kills him. And if that was meant to be the case. HOO BOY. EXCUSE ME WHILE I CRY. 19:08 I adore these orchestrations so much. That electric guitar from 19:16 onwards repeating the "Doesn't anybody ever get it right?" motif? CHILLS EVERY TIME.

I gotta be honest. I only knew of this musical from a book I have that's an encyclopedia of Steven King. It's from 2008 or so and it mentions this musical, says it ran for maybe 15 to 20 shows and then closed down. I had no idea they did a revival
Honestly I prefer the revival, but the Broadway version has some really good elements. Like Marin Mazzle (Bless her soul) was good, but Betty will always do this role best Also the In choreography is really good
it's amazing how diverse the views are on this musical. I've always preferred the tone of the original, but the structure of the revival. Betty was always the ultimate Margaret, a true class act.

That note just...uggghhhhh melts me every time! Female low notes are so underappreciated. Anyway, in terms of Barbara, the first person who'll tell you she was miscast was Barbara herself. From the start she felt like she wasn't the best fit for the role and it wasn't the right way to make a comeback after nearly 2 decades. In my opinion, her and Linzi's voices really didn't mesh together very well, and they didn't have much chemistry outside of Evening Prayers. The Stratford score did her dirty as well tbh. I think she didn't have the fierce anger and passion in her beliefs that makes Margaret such a compelling character.

Its not high quality, and is pretty short, but still worth watching. You can even hear the guy operating the booth say: "I wonder where Billy is." as he looks on the screen.

I honestly believe that if they did a full broadway revival exactly like this production it would be a hit. It was ahead of its time.
Personally I think people would still have issues with how disjointed it is, but it would've had a longer life because of the camp factor.

It didn’t play in London. The U.K. production was at the RSC in Stratford upon Avon. Different city.

I gotta be honest. I only knew of this musical from a book I have that's an encyclopedia of Steven King. It's from 2008 or so and it mentions this musical, says it ran for maybe 15 to 20 shows and then closed down.

Honestly I prefer the revival, but the Broadway version has some really good elements.
Like Marin Mazzle (Bless her soul) was good, but Betty will always do this role best
Also the In choreography is really good
it's amazing how diverse the views are on this musical. I've always preferred the tone of the original, but the structure of the revival. Betty was always the ultimate Margaret, a true class act.

That note just...uggghhhhh melts me every time! Female low notes are so underappreciated.
Anyway, in terms of Barbara, the first person who'll tell you she was miscast was Barbara herself. From the start she felt like she wasn't the best fit for the role and it wasn't the right way to make a comeback after nearly 2 decades. In my opinion, her and Linzi's voices really didn't mesh together very well, and they didn't have much chemistry outside of Evening Prayers. The Stratford score did her dirty as well tbh. I think she didn't have the fierce anger and passion in her beliefs that makes Margaret such a compelling character.

@@jessica23claire frrrr like you shine was cute i do like the song. but sue has literally no songs in the revival for some reason they even cut “it hurts to be strong” like “once you see” is so forgettable and boring also personally hate chris and billy in the revival i hate that they made chris ditzy it felt weird and didn’t fit cuz chris is the total opposite… also “don’t waste the moon” is so much better than “the world according to chris”🙄

@@jessica23claire Fun Fact: A channel called 'CARRIE ARCHIVE' posted a small clip from the control booth that shows the broadway destruction. Its not high quality, and is pretty short, but still worth watching. You can even hear the guy operating the booth say: "I wonder where Billy is." as he looks on the screen.

I hadn't actually thought of that. Funny you mention Judy though, Linzi covered The Man That Got Away a few years later, which obviously Judy made famous.

Sadly the footage of act 2 OBC was never shot, the battery on the camera died. There's plenty of audio around though.
