The crescent cab ge's dash 8s are the only locomotives I haven't seen roaming the tracks down here at all I have seen them in action on someone's channel before but I forgot who the guy was.
These are engines that have definitely grown on me. The SD60E 911 unit was stationed up here in Manassas VA for a few weeks moving rock trains for a large rock company. I was lucky enough to have seen her a few times. Though now it shows considerable wear, it was still a sharp looking unit.
the SD60E indeed does have a funny looking cab But its design is vitally important It was to meet up with FRA's current widecab standards for crash worthiness and to keep crews safer in an accident compared to a standard cab it was also rebuilt to make up for some of the failures the SD60 suffered trying to make up for what it failed in the catastrophic SD50 the rebuild was terminated because iirc, it was deemed a waste of time and money once 2017 rolled around, especially since NS had grew such a strong interest in the DC to AC traction conversion program, which sidelined typical updates to a standard cab that only got a new cab but no AC traction motors in all honesty, the SD60E does look good, but it doesnt do too bright in performance as NS had hoped, which is another reason why they stopped the program, especially since iirc the plan was to rebuild every SD60. But it still can get the job done, and is definitely by far better than the miserably failed GE version of the SD60E, the C40-8.5W
Unfortunately your comment wont hold up, the cost of overhauls are astronomical as well and the new units have the technology that keeps pace with operating protocol….ms
Wierd looking a little but I love seeing them. They have some dominating K5LAs, either older Narrow Font or a screaming Raised Letter. And yeah a good number of them are kept at Whitaker yard, for the transfers to and from Atlanta.
I love the EMD 60 series but I still think NS's SD60Es look weird. It's their elongated forehead/unibrow that makes them so strange. My favorite 60 series variant is the triclops cab.
Unfortunately for me I live near Pan Am's district 3 where roughly 2/3 of the road freights are Pan Am Southern trains, so NS locos lead. But because there is a ~15 mile section where the MBTA shares the tracks, units must be equipped with ACSES PTC, and the only compatible units are a handful of SD60Es. So most trains have one to three of those units.
I feel ya, I live near the D&H Susquehanna division and I’d rather see anything else at this point. Only recently some 22Ks have none-SD60E led trains because they’re not going all the way to Ayer.
I've got a story about that engine, one time right before church started I heard a train coming I go outside to watch it and that was my first time seeing a special unit it was trailing on a coal train and I was in pure shock
I love the EMD SD60E and I think they look awesome! It’s Crescent Cab is uniquely Norfolk Southern and I would never call it ugly. All locomotives are beautiful to me. I sure miss working on them. I worked at CSX though with those EMD Dash 3s with their unique CSX cabs. The GE BQ23-7 “Aegis Crusiers” are awesome too!
@V12 Productions Nice Video About The NS SD60E. Also, It's Not Just NS, CSX And The Other North American Class I's, As Well As Several Commuter Railroads, Have Rebuilt Some Their Locomotives And Have Given Them "A Second Chance."
My son and I saw that same unit in Griffin. We are huge fans!!! We’d love to meet you at the old Atlanta road bridge in Griffin that goes over the train tracks.
I’ve grown to like the SD60E a lot overtime. NS’s rebuilding programs are amazing with what they turn out with. I’ve also seen that they’re rebuilding some of their SD40-2s into SD40-3s. Even if those aren’t gonna be real SD40-2s, they will still live on for years to come. Locomotives like the GE BQ23-7 however? Is no acception. It was just plain ugly, especially when CSX had them in that ugly dark blue and grey paint scheme.
Nice interior layout, Storage for grips, good long hood visibility. And they’re SD60’s so they do well in the yard and on the road. One of my favorite motors to run.
In My opinion, I think it would be Great if we had a Cowl variant of this locomotive. The EMD SDF60E would be its classification. Also, the SD70ACC is essentially just an SD70ACE but without the Ugly large radiator grill, which makes it better. It too must have a cowl variant, and it should be called the SDF70ACC. There could also be ECO versions of the Cowl units. The SDF60E-ECO, and the SDF70ACC-ECO.
Hey that one was on the forest park track it looked like god I spent my summers there as a kid but it was a rusted over track back then now it's booming I heard
I actually really like the looks of the SD60E, I think they're very unique and the fact it's locomotive specific to Norfolk Southern, you can't often say that in this day and age of virtually cookie cutter locomotives!
NOT! I saw the SD-60E headline and immediately said not. I knew of one I liked so much its HO model sits in its case on top of my TV. I only rarely see it on YT and have to look for it on a special train locator app. Then I finally looked at the thumbnail and laughed. NS 6920! Thank you!
I've seen that exact same unit in here South Carolina in the Norfolk Andrews yard in Columbia and the ones in the regular NS black paint and horse's head.
I think they are fine. It's certainly function over form, and that function is note aero either. That said, they give some variety to head ends of already more interesting consists, so I am not one to complain. Also, way better than the Charger with the dot matrix nose. Those things are very astheticly challenged. Their longer distance and high speed counterparts look fine if the livery is good... But they otherwise look pre crashed out of the factory.
NIce video! I live 20 minutes away from the Altoona shops and have seen these being built. Even better was seeing the cabs coming from Curry which is in the old Conrail (PRR) Hollidaysburg cars shops. On flat bed trucks going past were I work at. They are a nice looking locomotive. The 911 unit is now assigned to work Enola Yard in Harrisburg,Pa

The 60E has character and that is something you don't see with train engines anymore. Everything is generic now, probably as a cost cutting measure, but the designers could at least use more imagination.
