After major abdominal surgery for endometriosis I started having mental health issues. The nurse in the hospital had accused me of not drinking the nasty tasting potassium solution they had found a reason to give me. She even looked under the bed to see if I had been hiding it. I knew my mother had a potassium absorbtion problem, but it was never this bad. I was jumpy, paranoid, wouldn't trust anyone or thing. A friend who knew me and saw the difference, and had had a hysterectomy told me to get potassium supplements. It has to be chelated potassium. Problem went away in a week. I was on them for a year, until the situation resolved itself with my diet. Wouldn't it be nice if doctors actually tested for multiple deficiencies and allergies rather than just doping people up with Schedual 1 drugs?
It would be nice, hopefully with the MAHA reforms we will see less pharma corruption and more useful studies & measured results.
Meat eater here, use quite a bit of salt and have very few if any leg cramps. If I don't get enough salt I usually have cramps. Also eating meat gives energy. If I feel sluggish, I eat a bit more beef and fat in the form of butter. It seems to work for me. Appreciate all you do, God bless and Merry Christmas ❤
Salt does not stop leg cramps. Magnesium does. Merry Christmas!🎄
same here being a meat eater fixed my high blood sugar ,I had to stop the fruits and starch diet , so much better now I was on the McDougal starch diet for three years ,it didn't work .
@@oldbiker9739
Starch is broken down into Glucose, Fructose and Galactose by the Liver.
I am a meat eater too. I started getting night time leg cramps after age 65. I started taking Calcium Citrate (250mg cap) in the morning, and, Magnesium Gluconate at bedtime. Knock wood, the cramps stopped. They were MURDER- even affected my FEET.
Look into bulk potassium to add to food in moderation daily sodium potassium go hand in hand in our body and magnesium as well but seperately because of conflicting pathway of absorption.
I still have a book written by Betty Kamen a few years ago called, "Everything You Want to Know About Potassium, But Were Too Tired to Ask." She was a forerunner of the new approach to medicine. You'd probably enjoy her many books.
I like 😂 that's a funny title.
Good one! I am super healthy, take no meds, good food, no processed BUT was rushed to hosp 4 years ago. Nearly died. Shocking. Solution was potassium drip. I think cause was underlying bug in gut. It was a huge shock. It can happen. Thanks Dr D for your useful list
Coconut water is very high in potassium as well as a good source of Magnesium.. :)
Well now I have been inundated with TH-cam videos saying drinking coconut water while high in potassium and other nutrients.. can spike blood sugar because of the carbs in it and also because it's dranken.. so maybe not the best choice of potassium in people with blood sugar issues.. ? Mine can be a little wonky.. and I do prefer drinking the coconut water as compared to getting my potassium from eating foods.. because I am not a big eater and like that drinking it gets a lot in me fast ... but again maybe not the best choice for diabetics or pre diabetic people.. seems real good for anyone else though... :)
You'd still need to drink about 8 cups a day of coconut water to get to the RDI.
@@harlowmarie_333 Look no further than orange sweet potatoes if you want a potassium bomb.
I've read elsewhere that a 4:1 potassium to sodium ratio is optimal for lowering blood pressure and restoring potassium balance. I was able to normalize my own blood pressure without drugs by completely eliminating processed foods, which tend to be dangerously high in sodium as well as deficient in potassium.
Interesting
@@bartbrodsky7190 Bingo! That is the correct ratio that naturally come in animal proteins. Our protein tissues are no different
I make my own electrolyte beverage. My potassium comes from Nu Salt, which is pure potassium chloride. It works fine.
Yeah I use some of that with my regular salt, just to help out with my potassium levels. I really don't see how anyone eats enough food daily to actually make the RDI.

Magnesium is required to absorb potassium from the GI tract. If you take potassium orally without magnesium, it often fails.
Magnesium is also an antagonist to potassium so if you take a lot of Magnesium it will deplete potassium.
@@sugilitegel6208 Magnesium is also the most common deficiency in humans.
I have read many books, I listened to many TH-cam videos by many of the world's leading gurus and health experts but nothing came close to the hidden herbs by anette ray. I recommend everyone giving it a read.

Beef, protein in particular is much better source of Potass without the carb overload
proteins contain zero potassium. not one amino acid contains K+.
@Mindvirus-ly5ed Says who? Look it up. 16oz of 80/20 beef contains over 1200mg K+. Animals store minerals in proteins for cellular functions. No different than our own protein tissues.
@@Mindvirus-ly5edAccording to who? 80/20 beef contains over 1200mg Potassium. Look it up. Animals store minerals in protein tissues for cellular functions as we do
@Mindvirus-ly5ed First off. Amino acids and proteins are not one in the same. 80/20 beef contains over 1200mg potassium. Look it up. Animals absorb and store minerals in their proteins. Same as we do.
Yes you are correct

Old RN here. I've seen hearts stop because of low K+. The worst was a patient who was critical and on TPN.....his glucose was high and the surgeon added more insulin to his bag. His K was borderline low. When he dropped his glucose the serum K went back into cell and his heart stopped three times in one shift. Terrible day. Merry Christmas Doc!

Bananas are high in Sugar. I always feel sick after I eat them.
Are you eating them when they have brown spots? If not they may not be properly ripe and will be hard to digest / give an upset stomach. Also recent studies show the fiber in fruits forms a sort of net that prevents unwanted sugars from being absorbed. Once again it's not as simple as measuring the amount of "sugar" as if all the forms of sugar are absorbed at equal rates. We need to take into account the whole picture and the interactions of everything when consuming the whole food.
As I have had my potassium almost completely depleted of my potassium at least 3x due to blood pressure medicines my doctor did nothing until I pressed the issue. I had them do the intercellular potassium test which is the best way to check your levels. Also the best way to build mine up is with an electrolyte powder I buy with 1000mg of potassium per scoop. I wish you had mentioned the intercellular test and that some of those foods youd have to eat mega amounts...like 10 bananas a day for example and that most of those foods arent low carb. Also wish you had mentioned the symptoms of low potassium such as heart racing, no energy( I couldnt walk a flight of stairs without being out of breath, insomnia, constipation, weight loss and nightmares, leg and feet cramps, to name a few...I had like 10 out of about 12...it was bad! I now drink 3000mg a day in my electrolyte drink
After doing some extensive research on Potassium it seems we can tolerate upwards of 10g per day as would have happened in our ancient diet with mostly vegetables and very low sodium intake. I take 2g of K powder a day and estimate the rest through diet to get the 4.7g RDA. Also Get blood serum level checked once a year.

Thanks, Dr. Suneel...My go to desert is a banana with dates
That’s too much sugar. Absolutely not healthy.
@@jan117 Not when it's combined with the fiber.
@@tsx3214 sugar is sugar. The fiber don’t changed anything about that. Sugar is our biggest enemy for the human body. You still can eat your banana with dates but only once or twice a week..!!!
@@jan117 Thank you for your thoughts
@@jan117 You are incorrect. Modern studies show that fiber in fruit forms a "net" that acts as a barrier to sugar absorption. These studies actually prove Anthony William, author of the Medical Medium book series, correct in his assessment that fruit fears are unwarranted and fruit is intentionally demonized by those who profit from sickness, when in fact fruit is one of the most healing food categories on the planet. He lists dates as one of the best things you can eat if you're diabetic - so obviously there is more to the story than measuring the nutrients of a particular food and assuming that all of it will be assimilated. We need to take into account the different forms, ways of absorption, and other interactions with the rest of the whole food to really understand how it affects our body. Though, you could do this test yourself; test your blood sugar then eat some dates and test it again in 1/2 hour, 1 hour and see how much it actually raised.
Hypokalemia is no joke, had issues with it where I would collapse and be unable to walk or even sit up due to a duodenal blockage that eventually required surgery.
I’ve really been upping my potassium. Since I have, 3-4 visits to the bathroom during the night has ended!
Interesting. I've heard a suggestion that banana before bed helps sleeping. I normally now have half a banana with a few nuts and a little dried fruit and homemade yoghurt before going to bed and, together with other smallish changes, has reduced my typical nightly bathroom run from 2 or 3 times to normally none.
@ I try and remember to have a banana before bed. Dried apricots are pretty high up there in potassium, around 600+ for a serving of 5. V8 has 400+ for a small can. I also take magnesium with my banana.

You might not consider this natural, but I use the so-called 'lite salt' for cooking which is 50% KCl and 50% NaCl. For salt on the table I use Redmond's Real Salt, as it has many trace minerals in it.
I use Heart salt ...... Same stuff.
Cream of tartar has 800 mg in teaspoon. Daily requirement is 4700 mg. You can buy it inexpensive in bulk.

Thank you for this very important information.
I heard Dr Robert Cywes say, salt is a must particularly on Carnivore. Salt food to taste and have five grams of salt a day in addition. Also drink water only when thirsty.
Chronic stress depletes potassium as well. Bananas are way too high in sugar. Avocados are much better.
Merry Christmas to all and Dr. thank you for all your advice and information.
Happy Holidays Doc. Aussie Bob ❤
Although I am a carnivore I still use cream of tartar daily, a half tsp in water to boost my Potassium.
Oh, thank you! I totally forgot about cream of tartar being a great source of potassium. I need to start adding that to my water. I’ve been feeling weak and lightheaded for several weeks now. I actually fainted a few weeks ago. Thanks so much.
@@sharonrose1226 I feel like it gives me more immediate available energy. Maybe it is not because of it. But I never used to feel as good. Carnivore is mainly why I think.
Please factor in oxalate overload from the good potassium sources that also are high in oxalates. Summative overload of oxalates result in very real harm. Reference: work of Sally K Norton, MPH 🙏

a broad diet, supps of iodine, Mg and Selenium is a road to better health
Brazil nuts very good as well.
Ah yes, hypokalemia...
That is something I am well aware of, because I have a chronic potassium deficiency that started back in 2010.
As of right now I have to take 7 prescription potassium pills with 750mg potassium in each pill every single day.

Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk with you again ~🎶
You need a scrip for that?
There's 1000 mg in one packet of the electrolyte powder. I use.
@williamevans6522 Yes I do need a scrip for that. The pills I take are made to release potassium all the way through the digestive system to optimize uptake.
I also need to get regular blood tests to check my levels.
And every so often the doctor ups the amount of pills I need to take daily.

great topic. ❤ My doctor advised to add some morton non-salt which is potassium chloride to my electrolyte mix. Also eat a lot of beef and avocado both of which have decent amount of K. 😊
A lot of elders from India including my mother aged 87 have the opposite problem. Too high potassium.
Commercially available KCl, potassium chloride, is sold as a salt substitute, like Mrs Dash. It is shelf stable and can be used if fresh foods are not readily available. Just get the unflavored product. I use it to make my own electrolyte solution.
Hello Dr.Saneel Dhand. I've read that Medjool dates are also very high in potassium. These are large dates, so I eat 2 every day, one in the morning and night.
Lite Salt is half potassium chloride half sodium chloride
Lite salt made me very sick.
Hello Dr. What are your thoughts on Celtic salt a few times a day with a tall glass of water. Approximately the size of 4 sesame seeds with each glass? ❤
The proper amount is ~ 1 teaspoon Celtic salt per quart of water, that will adequately remineralize distilled or reverse osmosis water. It has over 90 trace minerals. I disagree with the Dr. on forcing yourself to drink water as drinking too much liquid throughout the day can cause swelling in the brain, it's even possible to die from too much water intake. I follow Sadhguru's advice: drink when thirsty, until you feel no longer thirsty and then at most maybe 20% more. The body really does know best.

Thank you, very interesting. I could never drink that much water each day. But I do try to get enough. Thank you once again and thank you Dr. D. ❤️ 👍

I have chronic low sodium. My potassium is fine. After many many doctors and tests, they have never found out why.
I keep a chart on my kitchen pantry door of foods high in potassium and/ or magnesium. When planning a meal, I can just adjust if I feel haven't gotten enough.
Thank you - Dr.Suneel - merry Christmas!
Redmond salt has 86 mineral in it and Potassium too.
I bought bulk potassium chloride from the south anerican company and i add a dash to my coffee every am along with a dash of sodium
I use potassium nitrate in my electrolyte drink, my nitric oxide level is high 😊

Potassium doesn't show up in blood tests unless it's very low I know this from personal experience you have to follow the symptoms
What about 4-Amino Pyridine to uptake Potassium? There is science on this helping Autistic, neurological, and chronic fatigue. I would like to know more about these trials.
The idea of getting "what you need" from fruit, veggies, etc. is no longer true, if it ever was. No plant can make a mineral. They must absorb them from the soil. With heavy farming methods today, much of the soil is depleted. The plant will only contain what the soil has. Unless you can grow your own and re-mineralize the soil every so often, supplementing is the only way to ensure you are getting what you need.
Merry Christmas Dr. Dhand!!
can it be low if you have a staghorn kidney stone and/ also some liver congestion?
I might check out the Medical Medium blog on those topics for more info or buy/borrow the MM book "Liver Rescue" and/or "Cleanse to Heal" from a bookstore/library.
Severe nighttime leg cramps lasting hours used to hit me several times a month. I tried a few things (like altering my exercise regimen) but nothing helped UNTIL I intentionally put plenty of potassium-rich foods into my diet. The change was very quick and I haven't been bothered with them for months now.
Potassium supplement tablets are useless. Don't even bother with them. Each tablet is about 100 mg. You'd have to take 47 PER DAY to supply the Recommended Daily Amount in your diet (which is 4700 mg!). Don't even try. The only reasonable action is to ingest a variety of potassium rich food types every single day (and cut back on your sodium intake at the same time). Just make a list of potassium-rich foods and be sure your eat enough of them every single day.

So in other words to solve our low potassium we have to eat tons of fruit with it liver damaging fructose. Literally out of the frying pan and into the fire? Beef contains all you need and doesn't cause fatty liver disease.
Often I've wondered if most all folks have this deficiency, and scarcely any suitable supplement available
Plenty of supplement, electrolyte powders high in K.
I take potassium and magnesium for heartbeat problems. Pills four in the morning and four at night along with tomato juice. One can is about 600mg. That is much better than bananas. Salt was never a problem for me. 400mg of magnesium and I don't get the leg cramps. And of course what I get from food.
When I had my stroke my potassium was low so I was given IV potassium. Six months later blood work showed my potassium was 3.6 so I asked the Dr about supplements. She said it wasn't necessary. I was medicated for high bp. After about another 3 months of going nowhere with the bp and Dr suggesting diuretics I started taking beet root supplements. Three months later I had to stop the bp meds because my bp was around 100/60. They were also pushing low sodium diet during that time and I actually tracked my daily sodium intake and it was half the daily recommended maximum allowance so I knew sodium wasn't the cause of high bp.
I eat so much intact plant foods, low oxalate greens, and orange root vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, I average about 10 grams of potassium per day!
Doctor, Do you have appointments available? Diet guidance. Do you have stories of those who have followed your programs?
