Love the film score. Christopher Lee has a presence on film that he charms you even when he plays the villain and you should be rooting for the hero. He is mesmerising
Mario Bava is an artist. Film is his canvas, and he decorated them with such delights and charms and colour visions. I just watched a beautiful Blu-ray copy of this last night before I found your wonderful upload. Such a delightful masterpiece and a gem of European cinema. These films must be protected and preserved at all costs.
Christopher Lee is awesome, one of my favorites and this is a classic movie and he is great. Happy Birthday to you Christopher and thank you The Mysterious Domain Movie Palace for uploading this classic!
Excellent! Thank you for sharing this film with us. I have never seen it until today. Thought I had seen all of Christopher Lee’s movies. Love these old horror film with Vincent Price and Peter Cushing.
Love this film. One of my favorites by Bava. I remember being entranced by the atmosphere of rich decadence and Bava's luxuriating in stylistic excess when I first watched it--Lee's hand coming toward the camera at one point and alternating green and red light filters as his face comes toward the camera for a deep kiss. And I love the progressively tighter closeups of Lavi's face as she's walking down a hallway toward a door with a look of terror on her face and how her face is bathed in deep blue as she gets up from her bed and leans against a bedpost later on. Also, the part where she's playing the piano and the camera moves toward the rich fabric of the curtains before the windows with a storm raging outside and then back to her face and then back to the window with Lee peering in angrily. Bava really knew how to lay on the Gothic effects. Everything looks so well-composed and painterly. Of course, some dismiss him for his sacrificing of story to effects but as Pauline Kael said of Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, he makes more of those effects than the solemn meat and potatoes of storyline other directors dwell on. And who else but Bava with his wicked sense of humor would have made a film in which romantic love is transformed into sadomasochism? He was truly ahead of his time. Even today it would be kind of shocking. This print looks like it's taken from the recent Blu-Ray edition which is noted for its darkness--everything looks tinged with violet or deep blue, which works for the morbid tone of the piece. There's a European version from Germany which isn't so dark.
I'm so glad you see the poetry of Bava's work. And I love Orson Welles for the same reasons, especially his version of Othello which I will show here at some point. If I can...
@@themysteriousdomainmoviepalace Yes, that's beautiful. Welles was very inventive with the camera. But his Othello has a lot of dubbing and muffled sound issues if I remember correctly because of the scattershot way in which it was shot--some scenes here, then Welles going off to work on another film to raise money, then shooting a few more scenes. It's amazing it got made at all under those conditions.
I must confess I stumbled across this tonight quite by accident (arcane algorithmic sorcery) and clicked on it expecting to enjoy a few minutes and wander off again, when I found myself totally riveted and watched the entire movie. I've watched this movie last year and I love it! That actress was gorgeous in this movie. Thank you for uploading it! It's so interesting what you said about this movie, I did not realize there could be much more behind the toxic relationship.
Daliah Lavi. She was an Israeli actress who enjoyed a few years of fame in the 1960s. She was also in one of the James Bond films and made another Italian horror classic, The Witch (La Strega). In addition to being a great beauty, she could also act as this film attests.
Listening to your introduction to this movie, I was reminded of a role Christopher Lee played in BBC miniseries that came out in the year 2000, based on the first two books of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy. The series was simply called Gormenghast. And Christopher Lee played Mr. Flay brilliantly. I will add that as a lover of the books it was based on, I also very much enjoyed the series, and was glad that they did not try to do the third book, as I don't think film or television could have done justice to that book. In any case, for "completists" of Christopher Lee material, it is well worth finding and watching.
I love Gormenghast! I never saw the whole series----I thought it was in the 90s. Was there another one? I was too busy in those days for television. Lol! I'd like to see it now that you reminded me.

He was in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow and The Corpse Bride (voice). Small parts but he was in them!
I found the castle interior more scary than the storyline, why would anyone build a colossal dump like that? You'd never be able to heat it unless you cut down a whole forest and had an army of servants to keep the blazes toked up and most of the heat goes up the chimney not the living quarters. I think you'd literally freeze to death in there even in summer. Not even bear skins would keep the cold off you. (Blue with the cold.)
Extremely stylish and beautifully lit throughout, though I found the score a tad overwrought and the fact that Lees's voice was overdubbed was disappointing. Still, emminently likeable though.

@@HEART_MIND_One Its not montetized by me but youtube puts ads on everything now and I suspect they want to force people to pay for Premium. The copyright holder may also get paid. I don't see ads when I watch on my channel. It may be regional. Sorry about that.
Thanks so much❤
Yes,Christopher Lee was devilishly handsome😍 Tony Randall is easy on the eyes as well😘
He was in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow and The Corpse Bride (voice). Small parts but he was in them!
A true work of Bava Art.........on the same level as Edgar Alan Poe
I found the castle interior more scary than the storyline, why would anyone build a colossal dump like that? You'd never be able to heat it unless you cut down a whole forest and had an army of servants to keep the blazes toked up and most of the heat goes up the chimney not the living quarters. I think you'd literally freeze to death in there even in summer. Not even bear skins would keep the cold off you. (Blue with the cold.)
And its very dark...
@themysteriousdomainmoviepalace Yes, it was kind of, d-d-d-dark.🫣
This is a great film.
Great Christopher Lee
Chris Lee’s Kurt reminds me of Heathcliff
I know! I was wondering if he ever had a chance to play Heathcliff.
Extremely stylish and beautifully lit throughout, though I found the score a tad overwrought and the fact that Lees's voice was overdubbed was disappointing. Still, emminently likeable though.
