My family lived in a small town in Wyoming when I was growing up. We were very poor but as a child I was oblivious to it. Believe it or not, we had a well in the front yard for our water and had to go about 100 feet from the house to an outhouse to use the bathroom. My favorite and only birthday party was my eighth (1957) and I will always remember it. I had seven siblings and almost without exception the only celebration that marked a birthday was an upside-down breakfast plate hiding whatever gift could fit beneath it, usually a candy bar. Still, for the most part, I have nothing but fond memories of my childhood.
