my when i first started a few years back i was running 25 30. Which caused me to pick up bad habits like to dark of paintings. But as i grew i got into realism and wathed a lot of Stuff that Steve Leahe did , then i noticed i slowed down just like you said. You are so spot on for the green folks. That habit still comes out like a snake that bites me. Now i run 8 to 12 for the details. Very well done Rob another well thought out and very detailed Video under your belt.
I'm a beginner in airbrushing, but watching your videos I always learn something new instead of just getting frustrated that I'm doing something wrong. All my time I was trying to achieve the effect here and now instead of what you say, building layers in small layers. Thank you for every information you share. For me you are the Grand Master of airbrushing.
Thank God for ADHD. I have lost so much interest in art and airbrushing in particular because ai have been viewing it a race due to my age and trying to copy every one out there resulting in my brain just getting scrambled. Now thanks to you I may be able to start over and have more realistic targets.
Bloody hell, mate, you were already doing some of the best airbrushing videos I've seen on TH-cam... but this is another 100 steps further forward, again. Well-fucking-done! (Also, another Suzuki quote I think you are expressing here: "The beginner's mind is compassionate, it is boundless.") Solidarity as always and thank you for sharing.
Love this. You are so right about wanting to lay the paint down. That is one of my problems. Thank you, this I believe is an excellent suggestion to help dial me dial it in
I always said to the young flooring apprentices, the most valuable thing is sweeping the floor clean, get a clan floor and your starting on the right foot, speed comes with experience, …I’m so looking forward to my journey, and having a great teacher is a bonus, as for your diagnosis, “don’t change, you are one in a million, that’s why we follow you on your tuitions, , your work speaks volumes… I read many of the comments and it just shows how much we respect and appreciate you… it’s a massive thank you from me, I can’t wait until my little H&S ultra arrives…. It will be practice, practice practice, ..thank you Rob, kindest regards, John.
ha ha u r so right.. i too .. aww i need to practice the finest lines ..finest dots and later i found my self in trouble for not practicing shading and blending at distance ..😂
I am using inks now, after a video I saw of you doing a little card and I am finding it great to work with, I use about 10 psi and thin the inks down with Isopropanol and thing are coming my way. At first I was using paints and water, but I struggled a lot, your method is much better. Thank You.
Very interesting video Rob with some good advice on air pressures and paint thinning something like this would have been a god send a couple of years back as you can relate this over to spray guns👌must say you do seem better mate and more relaxed so lets hope you keep on getting better🙏👍
i did tons of lines and spirals and shading exercises .. almost 3-4 drawing books and even did cursive abc script on 5 lines student notebook ..well to be true thats the first thing i tried and practiced ..😂 then moved to space scenes and gifted bunch of them ,,then to sunsets and rises . i got very intrigued with watercolour and my child artist that had lost took over 😂 and i said i need start it again plus it will impove my sketching and colour theory..i used u draw with pencil and just when i moved to colours things changed and i stopped art .
i got the portable airbrush compressor and i measured it, it delivers about 10 psi .. i was expecting 20 but as u said 10 is fine for detailng . I have trouble sleeping so i got it so i can airbrush at night .. and i made a sunrise with it and it was fun ..no noise ...perfect ..!
I've been airbrushing for years, and I wish I had known about air pressure a long time ago. I recently started using a very low pressure, below 10 psi, and it has made a huge difference. I used to use 30 psi, which was a struggle at times. The only positive is that being used to a higher psi, going to such a low psi now almost feels like cheating. Once you can control the higher pressure, it makes it so much easier when you lower it.
Cool and Slow, Dred ! I like it ! - the way it should be ! ..U even got me calm and ready after this basic start with pressure /thin paint - it's giving me a base to start with ! THANK YOU !
Goodness me, it's another awesome video from Mr. Dickons! Thank you very much. Hey! that problem on the last video, you are a Champion. Don't let it put you down, try to understand it and after you understand it you will know the better way and the better spot to attack it. I may have it, I identified with the noise problem that changes our mood. I will not get a medical opinion because I dislike hospitals, pills, shots...I had my appendix taken by mistake, and I had symptoms of meningitis (for sure thats misspeled)...coma...christmas and anniversary in a hospital bed...hell, thats another story...doesnt matter anyway. What does matter ist that we are alive and we have to take the most out of it. Cheers.
Another great video - invaluable Rob✌️💜😊 Im finding interesting that with my You Tube watch lists Ive been drawn to 'my people', without knowing it, people with challenges akin to my own. We are not alone. I only use 15-20 psi, 25 psi max, 10psi at lowest, my models dont need high pressures - it hurts my tinnitus too! For easy work, I now use - after some off piste challenges with various non airbrush acrylics - airbrush reduced paints and/or then do 1:1 at lower PSIs. I dont want paint bouncing off of my models also I want to slow it all down too, less is more, especially weathering a 3D items. Some guys on TH-cam are usung high pressures and going at their models full chat - beyond me, why would anyone want to🤔🤕😲 I was also pondering with your diagnosis Rob - is there anything else you can do using alternative medicines/treatments? I can recommend Burgs' 10 minute meditations as a general help for racing minds etc. Good luck with it all, if I can be of help please let me know💜✌️👍😊
Fascinating, I am now convinced thank you. For an absolute newbie you talk about setting the psi, but then use the Mac valve and set by ‘ear’. This could do with a little explanation. For ages I didn’t know what the Mac valve was on the airbrushes I had, and some of course don’t have Mac valves.
@@dredfxcustompaint Thanks I'm new to airbrushing. ''the whole painting hobby really'' and just got an Ultra 2024. I'll pick up some of the inks you use, they sell them at a shop near by and I'll get some Isopropyl and Distilled water. I'll just follow your steps and work out any kinks from there. Thanks for all the tutorial videos eh. I really appreciate the tips you give and the fact that you show what you mean in the videos straight up. You aren't just saying one thing and doing another, you really do it.
As always, best advices and tips, i m using Schimnke aero color inks and use the mixing tips you are using on FW Inks, the air pressure as you have mentioned in the video and i must say WOW!!! Big improve on the flow, nice layering on the surface, no more rushing to get the details i want. So thanks Rob for these videos, i just want to say i would of loved of you were making these videos 15 years ago
Hi Rob , very educational again . I like our videos. You use the FW inks. is the use of other inks like liquitex and schminke the same ? I mean the thinning with isopropanol
So with the wicked its 3 drops of reducer to 1 drop of paint, does that ratio stay the same when using the isopropyl? Also, is there any difference using one or the other or even a mixture of the two at the same time? REALLY GOOD TIPS IN THIS VID!! ❤
Isopropyl alcohol has an unpleasant smell, and it is harmful to breathe it. Why don't you use ethyl alcohol? I purchased 10 liters of ethyl alcohol. Greetings from Russia.)
This is possibly the best explanation of air pressure vs thinning that I've seen on TH-cam. Thank you very much for giving us this. 😄
This guy is a gem. He just knows his stuff.
Another informative video thank you

Excellent demo well done. I have been gifted a bottle of Kandahar drawing ink by D&R would this thin as per FW inks?
Your portrait top left, the girl with the beanie hat. How did you achieve the woollen effect on the hat and would it be the same in colour?

Hi your best bet is to get one for your airline I have one on my airline that works OK if not just set it at your compressor 👍
Would you use the same paints and inks on miniatures?
As long as you primer it first it will be fine
