  • Good Smile Company has changed everything in the figure industry. Before, figures were either cheap prize figures or expensive scales. But after the release of Pop Up Parade, GSC is benefiting from producing figures utilizing the best aspects of both cheap and pricey figures. Though Pop Up Parade is far from perfect, let's see how it has revolutionized the market.

      I know several anime series I would love to see figures from but we all know that good smile even if they say the will make figures of less popular things it will still only be from mainstream anime but instead be a less popular charters so it´s kind how do we bullshit people to think we are doing something no one else does but still do what every one does do figure from SUPER popular shows.
      But then again they would lose money if the made figures from less popular shows so it´s a safer bet doing popular shows less popular characters.

    Popup Parade is hardly the first time mid-range figures have been created, where it really shines is the level of diversity and consistency that means you don't have to go far to find a figure you might want and you can be confident that what you're getting is high quality, even if unambitious. They're not likely to be the centerpieces of a collection, but they're a fantastic choice for adding some texture to your shelves thanks to making a wide range of properties so accessible.

    • @ryllharu
      @ryllharu 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I really wouldn't say they're more diverse. The overwhelming majority of Pop Up Parade lineup is mainstay shonen series. In a sense they're figures that wouldn't get made because figure collectors on the higher end wouldn't buy 20,000 to 30,000 yen figures for those types of series, but they're still primarily from extremely popular franchises (past or present) that the prize market also covers. I guess a takeaway is series that got bad figurines from 20 years ago get decent ones now.

    What I love about PUP is how they focus on creating figures based on iconic poses. One perfect example for me is the AOT line. I have only collected the Titan versions, but their poses are highly symbolic in the anime/manga. Having them in figure form makes it very original unlike other figure company’s out there who tend to focus on other action poses and totally forget the detail of the character.

    The sheer variety of characters in Popup Parade is what makes it a truly amazing line it can be frankly exhausting being a collector of a series that isn’t incredibly popular or older in nature. Popup not only takes out the aggressive scalpers for older anime merch but also gives so many characters who never even had a figure before a chance to shine. Definitely one of my favourite lines because of that.

      I wish the pegs didn't protrude downward from the figure's feet but rather up from the base itself...Because most of the time, the figures look like they could easily stand up just fine without the base at all. That would also give people the option to make their own custom bases a lot more easily without worrying about the base's width/thickness they'd need, as PUP pegs (and subsequently the bases themselves) end up being too large, when other figures like prize-grade can get by with half the width.

    Great video. I know there are quite a few commentors that also bring up about the base but it is really about the affordable price of your favorite character that PopUp Parade is aiming for. With inflation, but more importantly the size, paints and sculptors of the scale figures, people will eschew those and go for quality quantity that they can fit on their shelves. Expensive figures won't go away, but it is great that GoodSmile PUP, FuRyu Tenitol and even Taito are giving the affordable option - especially to overseas fans that look for the cheap in not only figures, but apparel and video.

    I just got into figure-collecting (literally less than a week ago), and out of the 20 figures I initially bought, 16 are various PUPs and I'm pretty pleased with them, especially considering the price.
    My main gripe is probably the bases; they're random (some are hexagonal, some are round) and come in various colors and are pretty boring - I'm considering spraying them all black.
    Other than PUP, I'm keeping my eye out for Taitos AMP+ series and FuRyus Tenitol series. Seeing as this "mid-tier" for anime figures seems rather new, I guess I chose the right time to get into this hobby. ^^

    • @felix_xb

      I got them for art reference myself. They're great since can get a bunch of them and the quality is just good enough, the price isnt too bad (it's around the price of a good book here) and the size is just right for what I want them for (ie. around hand size or origami paper size). The super simple ones are the perfect ones for me; while dynamic poses are not so good for my use I found. Lucky for me those are the cheaper ones since everyone wants the fancier ones. Not much in terms of good options for male figures, I think only saw some jujutsu kaisen ones that look good (or rather, look useful).
      The really big ones look nice and all but would maybe only consider getting some really fancy one of a character I like ONCE to decorate my shelf with and nothing else. They're more expensive then literal furniture, washing machines (heck I think I've seen basic kitchen cost less then some I saw), it's hard for me to fathom thinking of them as anything more then as some really expensive painting I stick someplace. Previously I only ever got a nendroid of a favorite series (some years ago), for same reasonning, just decoration. I don't know how the collector people deal with it, but at the price of the expensive ones I cant imagine the regret if it's somehow not-what-you-thought. With this mid tier their just cheap enough if you get 3 and 1 is great, 1 is good and 1 is so-so, it's whatever, wouldnt even think much of it.

      @@felix_xb its a hobby, an expensive hobby but no different then others who enjoy spending money on it. I do agree with the bigger figures having to be subjected to space to make it worth it and ofc the sculpting like the Resins that are larger and pricier.
      Still though some of this things could become rare that down the line can increase in price. Think of Funko Pops in the West. People collect like crazy especially if its one that later become Grails that can worth a ton of money. Its still a figure albeit a different shape of a figure yet I feel the same and dont understand why people collect multiple versions of the same characters. I think its ok for decoration purposes for like a charcter of that series with manga dvds blue rays novels and books to have, its just excessive at times.

I live in Switzerland where collecting is stupidly expensive but seeing these gives me some hope of buying a figure in the shop instead of ordering online without going broke. I like to look at the figure in person before I buy them and pop up parade also has that. Nice window boxes to see almost all angles of the fig. The size is also good, not too big but not too small. I think they are doing well atm and it's a nice alternative to the real cheap prize figures where I had some quality nicks sometimes.

    One thing no one seems to mention about Pop up Parade is the plastic box they use. It's clear plastic on all sides allowing buyers to see the figure in all its glory which can help to decide whether it's worth buying. The plastic box itself is reasonably durable meaning less chances of the figure (and the box itself) from being damaged during transportation.

    I once bought the same PUP figure 3 times...1st time, the outer plastic box was very crushed...2nd time, the head was snapped off in the box (no damage to box itself) showing the figure material was brittle. 3rd time, the paint job had a part on the front visibly missing, that I eventually just painted in myself, because it was already the 3rd freaking time. So much for more "quality control".
    I personally like Furyu's Tenitol line better, as they also have better bases, better poses...although their boxes kinda suck with very small window cut-outs, at least it's a little more durable than the all-plastic boxes of PUP figures...that will eventualy turn yellow over the years, mark my words.

I've always heard the horror stories about prize figures with bad quality control and being inconsistent but out of about 40 prize figures I've only had 4 that were bad with quality control 3 Banpresto ones and 1 Furyu.
    I havent brought any popup parades as of yet due to not having much display space so im at a point of being very picky with figures and characters, the line hasnt hit any series for things where I would want them. GSC is so good with QC so I trust the line is good and its nice for people to have another budget friendly option compared to scales

    Thanks to PoP figure series, I've got an amazing Zagreus figure from HADES.
    I've pre-ordered Demon's Souls fluted armor character and Guts as well, both L size models.

    I love pop up parade. Affordable, high quality. The thing that sucks is the vendors at conventions tend to super inflate prices on them. I saw the pop-up parade Sesshomaru I wanted at a convention and the vendor had it priced at $90 bucks. That’s close to the price of a scale. I looked at my friend who was debating on getting one and was like buy from good smile, that only costs like 30-40 online.

    The good thing about PuP bases, is that they are very easy to clean, unlike diorama-like bases. They also take up much less space, and for the price they sell for, allows me to buy a lot more figures. Not perfect, but I do like them a lot.

    I know Pop Up Parade is not that pricy or expensive but some of the figures such as Berserker Armor Guts, that one is pricy and limited.
    But still, about the details, It's very amazing and neat details for figures with almost accurate scale as well

  • @genefactor007
    @genefactor007 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'll mirror what a lot of people have stated regarding Pop Up Parade's immense variety of characters. This is the biggest draw for me. I mean you can get figures from anime and video games. Sometimes the quality can be a little hit or miss but for the most part they are stunning figures. I also appreciate the size of their standard line. They are much larger than you'd expect, not to mention their huge L and XL figures. I've come to forgive the bases especially when you consider companies like Megahouse would charge upwards to $300 for a figure and pack them with plain clear plastic bases.

    I think the future of the figure industry is in consumer manufactured figures. Where you can 3d print the figure, 3d print the painting masks, and you do it all yourself; but where companies will also build them and sell them exclusively in the conventional way for a period of months/years. The benefit being that they can still make money off of a design after they stop production and the consumer can make the figure be whatever scale they want. Think of it like tapping into the garage kit market after you finish your production runs, except it requires zero additional overhead or inputs.

    • @ryllharu
      @ryllharu 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      3D printing undercuts the garage kit market and maybe makes those sorts of builds more accessible. It doesn't really compare to the higher-end figure market which have finishing details that 3D printing can't match or requires substantial painting skill and shading sense to end up with a good result.
      The biggest shift in the figure market is more Chinese manufacturers directly producing significant diversity in designs from Original Illustrations that the bigger name Japanese manufacturers just wouldn't produce otherwise.

    Selling popular "underrated" anime is a genius move. Nobody is selling them, yet they still have a relatively large audience, so there's massive potential money to be made.

    I do like the pop up parade figures overall, but I will say, I was disappointed to see the the size of the figures don't always match up well, Just as an example. I got Aqua Lucy and Torrus lucy and they are out of scale with each other. for me it hurts the ascetic of the display. I'm hoping they do all her forms too to collect, but if they are all out of scale with each other.

    Poppara being the same price OR cheaper than Nendoroids is unbelievable. The low price does reflect with the generic prizefig like poses but you can't really complain unless you have a whole shelf of them lol.

  • @PikaCheeks
    @PikaCheeks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    They're good quality indeed, especially for the price. However they're smaller than the average figure, 1'6 vs 1'7-1'8. That's what's stopping me from getting them, because they'll look off compared to the higher tier figures.
    I'll stick to more expensive figures, less is more ;) or just take it slow
