Never forget going to see him at the Jazz Standard in NYC with a friend of mine in the early 2000's. His album Black 🦋, about a decade earlier, captivated my musical imagination in so many ways. We were seated on stage level, much preferred seating. Russell came out and smiled when he saw us. The concert was awesome. My only disappointment was he didn't play The Grass is Always Greener, off that favorite album. Afterwards, we spoke briefly and I told him of my disappointment and he said, "Why didn't you request it?" "I didn't think you were taking requests," I replied. He just shook his head and said, "Next time, speak up." He never had to tell me twice, and he remembered me over the years. He's quite a guy.
