You absolutely have a lot of value to provide with consultation calls. I think it's a great idea that you do them. I picked up a couple of light panels on black friday to expand my lighting kit.
I didn't get it for Black Friday, but I did recently get a used 3 lens set of the Blazar Remus and shot a test with them against Lomo Squarefronts on an FX6 and an Alexa SXT. They have no business being as good as they are. I did jump on the Bright Tangerine Black Friday discount for a few accessories that I've been holding off on.
Thanks, it's a little on the heavy side when on my shoulder, but rare to go more than 15 min in that position. Best decision was keeping it built and installing a touch and go in the van.
A friend sent the Nanuk 938 CASE link to me. I was considering buying it. I need a good Burano only case for the few times a year when I need to FedEx the camera.
Great suggestion, this had motivated me to declutter the van and shoot a vlog covering what I carry. I'll save this for a slow week, which will be before the new year.
I didn't even bother with the Sony EVF rig on my fx9 , I already had bought the Vocas replacement . Almost everyone other fx9 owner I know has changed it out , it's like Sony expected everyone to do it but had to sell the camera with one. The whole camera was so cheap compared to what I was used to paying I wasn't really that bothered at the time.
@@Tommy_Beal Yes sort of became the "standard " replacement for the really not very good one that it came with, which was not far from being a throw away item TBH.
I picked up a Mito Air Tube modifier. Seems a bit gimicky, but I wanted to try it out for a hair light for indoor shoots. I plan on adding to my Amaran 200x. I had a situation where I was shooting a subject in front of a window in a small office and my Amaran t2c wasn't putting out enough light at 100%. I thought about getting a 4' tube light, but this kinda feels like a safer option in small spaces. We'll see how it works.
Bought a brand new Sachtler Aktiv8 Fluid head to replace the FSB4 which came with a used set of FlowTech 75 legs I bought 3 years ago off FB Marketplace. B&H price was marked down to 2k from the normal 2300 they charge. I primarily got it to accomodate the 200-600mm G lens I use when I pair it with an FX6 for wildlife shoots. Also purchased a brand new DJI Air 3s drone with the Fly More kit and 2 years repair/refresh, directly from DJI. Already have a Mavic 2 Pro that's in good condition, but wanted to get one with newer features (4k60/120 LIDAR 70mm) before it either gets banned or Tariffed to oblivion.
Great content. Sorry, dumb question from a fellow long-time freelance network news cameraman, but how are you getting a return from your laptop in the field from News Nation? Do you have to have an app installed on your laptop for this? Also, if you want a better viewfinder set-up for the FX9, I highly recommend the Arri top plate and viewfinder bracket for the FX9 coupled with the Zacuto eye piece. It's rock solid.
Dejero return via a URL. Stream plays in browser. Then HDMI out to a monitor. For other networks with LU return I can do the same via LU central, as my LU300 does not support video return. Thanks for the EVF info. Arri accessories are the best!
@@CrankyCameraman Working in the creative departments at local TV stations, I've only ever really used the included mics with Sennheiser packs (ME-2's I think) and it's like a night and day difference. Oh, it wasn't a Black Friday purchase, but I got a few lights a while back. The Cinepeer that you talked about on here which has been interesting as a weirdly powerful little tube. Also picked up a few variations of these inflatable tubes. They come in smaller variations (12w 2' and 20w 3') as well as a modifier that's 4' and attaches to the reflector of a Bowens mount light. Interested to see how it works as a little party trick.
@@StephenHildreth First 10+ years of my career there was always a sound recordist with me, with top in kit, and I paid little attention. Then, same as you, worked with the included lav mic, then upgraded to Tram, then Oscar Tech, and now Sanken. I would not have appreciated the quality improvement had I gone directly to the COS-11D. Inflatable tube lights are intriguing, I would like to test in place of a panel armed out on a c-stand as it looks safer.

Really interesting videos and a joy to see this nice gear! I work at a local tv station here in germany and what you do is completely different to our work. Could you explain to me, why there are these live hits instead of pre-recorded talking heads? Is that just tradition or is there a big point in doing that?
Live reports in the field is how it's done here in the US, for local and national outlets. In this specific situation the studios are on the other side of the country from where the reporter is assigned. There is a viewer of my vlog based in San Francisco that is a USA correspondent for a German media channel. He files his reports live to Germany with a similar setup and LiveU.
@CrankyCameraman very interesting. I know that live correspondent thing and we sometimes do live reports from very important, current events like big protests. Nice to see how it's done elsewhere :)
Nice touch with that small return monitor, and it's always a lifestyle upgrade for the reporter to have a small work surface in front of them - they can put some notes or their phone on it, but it serves us well, too, because they are then unlikely to drift left/right during the hit. And that's a very efficient setup/wrap, too! I have two questions after watching this one. What silks do you use for these smaller setups? (I have RodeRags, but both cracked near the mounting point, I guess it's a design flaw, disappointing given the price point, so looking for an alternative). And speaking of FX9 for broadcast news, did you have a video about color/profile tweaks that you cooked up a while ago? (Or was that just something you mentioned, but there was no separate video?)
I bought a $150 set of road rags. 2x3' silk in this application. I carry two sets in the van 18x24 and 24x36. Not as nice as Matthews but cheap enough to consider and expendable. amzn.to/41kBUGt
I did own and wear cowboy boots in CA. But I wear them quite a bit more here in TX. Working in the dirt, fire ants, thistles and No-see-ums, the boot is the best footwear in the brush. Outside of the vlog, I self manage and remodel a few rental houses. For construction work I switched from a traditional boot to Ariat construction cowboy boots. As the boot is faster to change into when I get to the job site, vs lacing up a traditional boot. Now i need some land and horses.
@@CrankyCameraman Haha. Totally get it. I mostly shoot sports so I'm not in those environments. I find myself always buying super cushy running shoes in my advanced years.
The studios are in Chicago, NYC and DC. This is a small South Texas based bureau that covers the US / Mexico border area. This was an easy week as it was a national story with no travel. So, we just need a spot to file the report that is in the area. The previous week they were working in Mexico and filing live and pre-recorded from there.
Used Sachtler, older models. Each time I’ve bought a low cost alternative it’s broken down in the field and then I buy another used Sachtler. I have 4 at present.

Not my decision but... One of the challenges of 24 hour cable news, with live 1 hr shows for 16 hours of each day. I'm working with a field correspondent who works out of San Antonio, the studios are in NYC, DC and Chicago. This story was a national topic vs a specific incident, like a house fire (if local news). I would prefer to be downtown with a city backdrop, but since we are in place for 6 to 8 continuous hours x 5 days, blocking a city sidewalk for that long is not possible.
