The statue looks terrible. When they say they asked the citizens of Boston, they probably ask them if they wanted a statue yes or no. I doubt that they presented a picture of that ugly statue and asked them to vote on it.

Exactly I agree that statue looks awful and doesn't represent MLK at all...the fact that the committee passed on presenting that mess is indicative of how they still feel and portray black people...they think we not sh!@ and allowed that hideous statue go up and allowed a black man to disgrace his people and he is probably not connected to the black community because there is no way possible he thought that thing was a hit and it needs to be removed immediately...they need to take a census on the removal of that thing a placing it in a discret area...period !!!
I have served on art panels. I cannot believe that no one looked at this sculpture from 360 degrees and did not see the difficulty in understanding what it was. The artist could have put their necks and heads on it.
The statue is definitely disappointing in the representation of Dr King. I don't get it and it's a shame it cost 10mill.
Their intentions was to make it ambiguous so you really can't see Who Dr King was.
Personally, I think that the statute should have been waist up to really commemorate and memorialize the King's.
If you see the photograph that it was replicated from. It would make sense.

I’m unsure if Al is saying a thousand people voted on a MLK statue being put up or THAT MLK statue being put up. I highly doubt that many people saw the finished design and then voted.
Nobody likes that sculpture. White ppl hate it too. It’s a bad sculpture. It’s not fine art. It is not good. It’s neither abstract nor representational. It’s a horrible work. If it was purely abstract, it would be more powerful… like a the Washington monument, etc. This is a hybrid, non-sense, low IQ art. The artist is bad.

In regards to Al's take on the statue being chosen by thousands of people...I've seen the process of getting a monument/statue approved. The "people" are not involved in the process from inception. Renderings are submitted to a committee and revisions are made, then options are given to the "people" to vote on. It appears that they wanted an ambiguous representation versus one that would be directly attributed to MLK.

I agree with Funky! They could have done a better job of representing a man and woman who turn turned this Fkd up racist American society around! Although we still fight for justice and who knows if ever the unnecessary prejudice the american culture perpetuates will ever be resolved. So thankful for Dr. King and Coretta for their sacrifice and efforts for justice and peace among the people of this country! They opened doors that had it not been for their sacrifice many doors may still be closed today. There is still a lot of work to do and thank God for the Black Folks and some White Folks who continue to support Dr. King's vision for peace and equality! Amen!

Bostonian here. The statue is NOT located in Roxbury. It's located in the Boston common. The general public was not given the opportunity to weigh in in the design.

One thing I will say, (as an individual who went through architecture school and is currently going through art school), we’re always told that as an artist you better have a solid explanation for your artistic expression, or you better be open and ready to take on the criticism, ESP w/ abstract interpretation. This is especially true for architecture and public structures made for a cause, such as this one. Honestly, in my humble unwanted opinion lol, there are several different ways where you could embrace the beauty of abstract work and still capture the essence of MLK and Coretta. I love abstract work, installations that provoke hard thinking, but because this was a public installation for a big cause, I would have approached it differently. I think the mark was slightly missed.
I thought it was just me that noticed this. Also, Al wasn’t the same after the MLK debate. Maybe the move to LA followed by traveling to Utah is kicking his ass.
Beautifully stated in terms of the installation… I am a lover of art and went to an art school to obtain my masters and you are absolutely correct! You have to be ready for the criticism and in terms of this particular installation it definitely missed the mark but there is a chance it might grow on us later… who knows? I didn’t like how the tone changed after the discussion either!! Al seemed to have really been bothered 😞

This parenting journey isn't for the weak... These types of situations further prove my point that I've always shared, choosing to be a parent is a very selfish choice whether made in love or ego. It is disgusting that people put their own personal desires before considering what mental state they would be causing that child to grow up in. There's no type of in-depth emotional consideration being applied for a child that did not ask to be in this world.
Furthermore, I personally feel that it is a gross mishandling which can border up emotional/mental abuse, just the same.

I love the concept of the statue however the finished piece is not well executed due to not being able to tell what it is. Maybe it looked great on blueprints, maybe it's just too big. A better idea would have a been MLK and his wife actual full body statues embracing.

Claudia is absolutely right there’s always a specialist on site to make sure the gun is safe so the actor can execute their role if it becomes the actors responsibility that would set a whole new president with actors using guns on screen! because I know Actor would want to be responsible for firing a gun and accidentally killing somebody.
He was not supposed to point it at someone and pull the trigger! That's his responsibility and there is where he made a mistake and somebody is dead because of that. And he need to get charged just like everybody else who makes a mistake and kill somebody does.

Al, CJ and Q have a good points about the artwork. I have a deep appreciation for AA artists however Boston is a hugely racist city. The artwork was intentionally designed accommodate non black citizens. It’s not a good representation of Dr. King.

I love AL; however, I had to side-eye how he seems to downplay Claudia and Q's opinion as a "jumping on that train" as if they are not capable of having an opinion that is based on their own personal observation and/or intellect.
