Seems like everyone has their own opinion regarding transit in Ottawa.

    What eventually happened?

The north-south line ("Trillium") uses diesel/electric trains, and is being upgraded to accommodate trains of twice the original length so as to double the capacity. There are no current plans to modify the Dow's Lake tunnel, though that would probably be needed if the line switches to a catenary / pantograph system.

I would gladly study a way to preserve the trees while the track can be twinned. However, the current O-Train service seems too much as it is so it might not really be necessary. Even if it were to be extended, like to the airport and Gatineau, would be simpler to just split the tracks at Bayview and Greenboro and keep the current 15-minute frequency that is sufficient for what it serves.

Are there really that many trains needed to carry passengers through the tunnel? It seems to me that if you coupled two trans together you could carry at least twice as many people through that tunnel.
Building LRT on the SE transitway from Billings Bridge as another great idea! Why did the City engineers not think of it? The transitway is supposed to be converted to rail after all: according to the transitway planning documents of the 1970's and 80's that was the plan.

The O-Train is NOT Light Rail, so not compatible equipment with the LRT. Ottawa's transit is a hodgepodge.
