Amazing band, great performance of a wonderful Carole King song, produced by George Martin. How was this not a hit?

It wasn't even released as a B side. Three singles were released from the album but none contained this song. They were billed as country rock and I guess this didn't fit the image, or maybe Capitol thought they'd get some country action. The only single that went anywhere was 13 Questions, which barely broke the Top 50. That's the only song of theirs most people know. Saw them twice at outdoor summer concerts in Central Park.. The first time was amazing. I wish I had a video. The next year, Loggins and Messina, who'd just put out their first album and had some songs from their second, opened for them. They were great. Unfortunately a lot of the crowd was there for them and some people left when they finished. Rowan had left Seatrain. His replacement was a good lead guitarist/ singer, but he had a harder edge that didn't blend so well. A lot of people left during the show and the band was clearly bummed. Pretty sure they didn't do an encore.

Major kudos just for knowing this song. It really is an undiscovered gem. I remember hearing Song of Job, 13 Questions, and their versions of Willin' and OBS on the radio. I bought the album and heard this, and thought, wow, a progressive country rock group that can do blues-gospel too. Saw them twice but they didn't do this. Too bad the bottom fell out when Peter Rowan left after one album, although Lloyd Baskin sang this and did a great job.

Fantastic group. I've listened to their music for almost half a century now. Where does the time go?

This song has meant a lot to me. Seatrain came to Council Rock High School when I was in 8th grade. I didn’t go, but they left a legacy. The Seatrain album made its rounds. I wore out one and got another. This song was by far my favorite. I went to a blue grass festival in Black Mountain NC maybe 2018 and caught Peter Rowan behind a building. I told him what he meant to me and said “Creepin Midnight”, but I don’t know if it registered. He was still singing with the yodel. I wish more people could appreciate what he did for this song.

If I remember right, it was Lloyd Baskin singing this, not Peter.

@@tubatalabal Thank you for letting me know. Lloyd Baskin now has my praise, especially for the final notes of this song.
