    Also poor auxiliaries, they really get very little credit both today and in their own time. Some auxiliaries were pretty badass, like the Batavian cavalry units which eventually composed the Emperor's bodyguard unit as Numerus Batavorum, a kind of earlier form of Varagian guard.

    Damn. I was wondering about just this very thing.
    I did notice how many recreations of ye-ol' armor looked like a metal barrel on the chest. All I could think was about how immobile and uncomfortable it looked. You would think that, with the armor being layered like it is, the segments could flex with the body. Those cheap ones look ridged as fuck.
    I have to wonder just how flexible the Imperial armor was. It always did look badass.

      Late, from my reading of the topic, and I'm no expert, it's sort of assumed the later Roman Empire was weaker than the earlier one, rather than the fact that Rome's potential enemies had grown much stronger and were much closer technologically and tactically, rather than the earlier barbarians.
      From a pure evolutionary point, later tactics and equipment is likely to have been an improvement.

      I believe the goal of this video was to illustrate the difference between good and poor quality segmentata. If this was its intention it fails miserably because no such points or cross comparisons were made other than a long distance shot of the armor guy in a filed with cheapola on. No comparisons of materials and construction techniques were mentioned just really a lotta blabber i found it uninformative and so now I still don't know. Many thanks I wish you well in all your future endeavors. Cheers

    I bought my Lorica segmentata for only £93.83 and it came with a fully metal engraved centurion helmet. So it is a good deal and all. It’s not bad. It’s sturdy, flexible, light and good as I’m on a budget. Once I have the money I’m planning on getting a custom tailored set of Lorica segmentata from arm street craftsmanship, they do very nice pieces, pricy, but handcrafted to you’re tailoring. I got some greaves from them. Very nice pieces. I might get the chest plate in the future.

    With regard to how Legions were equipped, a Legion might use (or not use) a particular type of armor may depend upon two things, first what the Quartermaster has in his warehouses, or could be gathered quickly, and secondly of all the preferences of the Commanding Officer of the Legion. This no doubt happened in the Roman Army and still happens today.

    I think you will find a significant difference in a well made tailored set. Might take some of the weight off the shoulders. I had noticed the cylindrical curass in your set. But I really didn't think about it actually being tailored. Can easily be done with pre fabricated segments. As new troops are fitted by the armorer.

    Metatron, a bit of a technical question regarding the Lorica design. I did own a suit for 15 years and used it, I think it was from Windless. I know I did not take the best care of it, but the interior leather backing dried out in places, causing the rivets to slip from it. I repaired the armor myself, which was a pain in the butt, but, when I redid the rivets, on the inside I placed a wide flat washer, easy to find the correct size and it gave them the additional support needed. Other then for historical accuracy, even the pictures of the good quality suit lacked what I did. Why is this not done with new suits? I cannot be the only one that this has happened too. It was a hard job doing the repairs. Sadly, one reason I haven't gotten a suit again.

    Hi Metatron, I love your videos. Could you make a video on Paveza, the shield used by crossbowman in late middle ages? How often was it used and did crossbowmen have the Paveza on their back in the battle or was it always on the ground while being used? Why was it not used more through history? Was it because it was too impractical, too expensive for their use or just nobody thought of it?

    I wore segmentata tailored to myself for a full day. Sure it works fine and I was able to! BUT! And here is a big one. My trapz were KILLING me at the end of the day! So I had to make a padded shirt with wool pillows on my shoulders. That was the only way I could get through a full day without being sore for 3 days afterwards. Then there is the issue of wear and tear. Wearing it a lot really put stress on the leather straps thoughout the armour, and required constabt repair no matter how good quality leather i used.
    If going out "in the field" i would probably always take a good padded jacket with a hamata over it ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! It is easier to repair on the go, weight is better distributed. You get more mobility from it and honestly, with the big shield, you would be a lot more comfortable going into battle.
    My conclusion from both armour was this: If I fought defensively, protecting a city where I didn't have to travel much, and had the infrastructure to support repairing the segmentata I would wear it because it offers better protection and often the enemy would want to come for me, not the other way around.
    If going on an offensive/expansion campaign where I didn't have the same infrastructure and would have to carry/repair most/all my own gear on the roads and wear my equipment more or less all day every day - the hamata would be FAR superior to the segmentata!

    Video about samurai, you say something like "the japanese armor you see here have layers, just like a lorica segmentata but...".
    Video about vikings and you talk about them having no layered armor and just ringarmor or no armor at all and YET you squeeze in something like "unlike the roman lorica segmentata the viking armor bla bla.." haha.
    Love your stuff, don't get me wrong but you DO have an addiction to that word! ;)

    • @paprskomet
      @paprskomet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All three major armour types used by the common infantry were in use at that time.That is chainmail shirt,Scale shirt and segmental debated in this video.These all were used at the same time.Worst thing you could do would be to imagine it like if they wore uniformly just one type-they clearly never did.At the start of that century mainly chainmail was in use,at the end of that century segmental armour would be also well present though it is impossible to say how much commonly if compared with scale and chain armours.During 1st century no Legion was permanently stationed in Judea prior great Revolt,but smaller legionary detachments were occassionaly present.Roman forces in Judea up to that time traditionally consisted mainly from Auxiliary regiments.One legion was stationed in Judea(directly in Jerusalem)after revolt was defeated and later after 2nd great revalt 2nd legion was added to enlarge occupation forces even more.

    Talking about lorica segmentata, would it makes sense to put padding between the shoulder plates to reduce running noise ?

  • @Daleryen
    @Daleryen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    like you said the segmentata is noisy when running but can you imagine a legion jugging at the same pace toward ennemies it must has been realy intimidating!

    I've seen something like a 16th c segmentata. I dunno the real name, but it was worn by cavalery too. The breastplate was like the roman version, the rest looked more like gothic armour.

    Hey so this is really the only place I know to ask this, but I'm looking into getting lorica segmentata, for Halloween and just to have around for fun, but I have a very short torso in comparison to the length of my legs, like, very short, is that going to hinder me a lot when buying it? If it rests on the hips, unless it's tailor made, I'm basically screwed, right?

    Wow, my country is mentioned here. Well, at least the Trophaeum Traiani at Adamclisi. Yes, the ideea of diferent armors on this and Trajan's Column is puzzling, considering they were both dedicated to the same event. Maybe it is because it depicts roman soldiers on different battlefields? The Roman legions that fought near Adamclisi had to cross quite some different types of terrains, from mounainous/hill areas to swamps in like 30km so I think chain armour would better fitted for tihs, also considering a much warmer climate.
    Meanwhile, legions advancing towards the main cities-strongholds(Capalna, Blidaru) and the capital of the Dacians, Sarmiszegetusza would have to fight in predominantly mountain areas, in narrow corridors, under constant threat of ambushes. So, can we assume that those going for the big prize(Capital) were the best legions with the best equipment?
    Also, could you search for some info if not do a video about roman relations with this region after the Aurelian Retreat? Stuff like Tabul Peutigeriana, maps, writings etc?

    I decided to watch this in my Lorica Segementata - yes, it's a cheap version, but I suspect that an ordinary legionnaire would have been happy enough with it. Oh, and it's pretty comfy sitting in it (ok, a chair, not a horse).

  • @Dragon1813

    Just to clarify, when did Rome use Segmentata, Chain Mail and Plate Muscle breastplates?

    • @TheRomanTribune
      @TheRomanTribune 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dragon1813 muscle cuirass mostly in the kingdom era, and used by commanders in later Roman eras.
      Segmentata was only really used during the very late Republican times and throughout the imperial era.
      Hamata(mail) and squamata used during the late kingdom days and Republican days. Squamata used occasionally throughout almost all the era's pretty much, usually by commanders similar to the muscle cuirass.
      Now, I'm not 100% accurate here but that should give you the basic idea.

    A thought occurs metatron. the budget minded individual will go to the cheaper set simply because they can't have the other, more expensive set. but wouldn't it be possible to take an existing cheap set, disassemble it, cut off the excess material and tailor it to the individual, then resemble it to get at least a closer fit for the time being?

    Maybe the Segmentata in that fort was used for guard duty and other occasions where the horseman are going on foot?
    will the segmentata really rest on your hips? by its construction with that hoops it is collapsible into its self.

    In terms of protections and maneuverability, how well does the Segmentata stack up compared to other types of armor such as the hatamata, musclata, medieval era chain mail and full plate?

    could heavy armor block bullets from small handguns? i kinda wonder. there are 380 autos and 9mm. considering pocket pistols. i wonder if it could block it.

    • @maxsvensson5891
      @maxsvensson5891 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From modern pistols with jacked bullets historical armour won't stop it.

    • @allangibson8494
      @allangibson8494 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bullets are why steel armor became redundant. Wrought iron armor heavy enough to stop a bullet is too heavy to move in.
      Modern composites changed the calculation.

    what kind of padding did romans wear under their metal armour?

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Subarnalis, of two different kinds depending if they were wearing segmentata (in which case only padding under the shoulders) or hamata (fully padded).
      I have a video on it.
      Keep in mind the actual historical name is probably thoracomachus, but we all say subarmalis now.

  • @chaosvolt

    Interesting. My guess is that even if the hypothesis that Trajan's Column using artistic license regarding who's in what armor was true, that still be reflective of the reality. That would imply, at a bare minimum, the artist has reason to associate the lorica segmentata with legionaries.

    hey metatron ever thought when they say light troops they mean LIGHT in number not in armor style? this would make more sense as the roman were always heavy in infantry legions. and light in every other type of solider as they were the supports.

    9:30 the Arch of Constantine was produced with the practice of eclecticism in which pieces of older monuments where repurposed to build the new one. I can't find any segmentata in the relief sculptures that were actually produced in Constantine's time (these can be identified by the short and stocky looking people in very high relief). The only segmentatae I've been able to find are in the pieces taken from a monument from Marcus Aurelius' time.

    • @paprskomet
      @paprskomet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All segmental armours depicted there are from 2nd century reliefs but thanks to archeology we now know that this type of armour was limitedly in use until very end of the 3rd century and likely even during early 4th.Much later made re-drawings of Theodosian victory monument shows few even in context of late 4th but it is uknown if later artist only applied what he knew from collumn of Trajan on dammaged Theodosian work or if it was actually already a Roman artist who did so(Roman art is often archaic in showing equipment as artists were often inspired by older artworks)...or if it was actually correct.But if so it is not securelly attested beyond early 4th century minus segmental protection of limbs which was in use at least until 5th century and is well attested.

    Also, back during the First World War (and both after and before), the Officers often rode horses while their men walked. So who says that Roman Officers didn't ride horses, but still wear Lorica Segmentata? They rode from Point A to Point B, but when it came to battle, they fought on foot, and wearing Lorica Segmentata might give them advantages other armors might not have.

    Even the expensive suit seems cheap and easy to fabricate- except for the hinges and rivets- that could possibly be nice handmade work. I hope it's not spring steel or anything like that since I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be historically accurate.
    You could probably adapt the cheap suit to have a better shape without too much trouble and expense: unattach the whole thing, cut each ring down, reshape them a bit, reattach, and re-fit the fastenings.

    • @metatronyt
      @metatronyt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mild steel is absolutely fine, spring would be futuristic for them.
