    Hi Stephen, hope the day finds you well. I appreciate the video on PET method. I'm planning on switching my catasetum to this method, unfortunately i've missed my opportunity for this year. I am going to try this on some dend speciosum and bigibbum hybrids i have. They are small and the roots have shot right out the bottoms of their pots. I think they need taller pots and the water well would be great as they are very thirsty when growing.

      I'm curious to hear how they do! In fact, I've wondered about using this technique on orchids not related to Catasetums.

    Unfortunately over here small seedlings are more common, I have yet to see a division for sale. But 2 out of my 3 seedlings are growing well. I am using PET and slow release fertiliser. It makes life easier. Who knows maybe if it grows well this year maybe next year I will have Catasetum saccatum blooms. Thank you for all your help.

    Hi Stephen, the cedar mulch is interesting, lots of tanins I imagine. Do you treat it before using it or straight from the bag ? Do you use it only at the top of the pot or also *in* the pot ? Thanks Stephen, I have started using your 3 layer method on my catasetum tenebrosum, granite stones in the water well, orchiata layer then sphagnum moss layer on top.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not treat the cypress mulch before using and I use it in place of the orchiata and spag. Saves money!

    This is my first season trialing PET and I love it! Especially since it's so dry here...I don't have as crazy spider mite issues as I did last year around this time. :)

    • @SVKLOrchids

      Ange Moss Hmmmm... probably $15-20 I guess. Depends on the plant and division size, of course.

    Loving these videos because I am using PET method with some success. Do you grow other plants like cycnoches or mormodes? Can they be treated similar to Catasetum using PET or do they grow better potted?

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can all be grown with this method!

    When you use cypress mulch instead of sphagnum do you pack it down the same way?

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I pack it down pretty firmly (like other bark), but not like spag. The nature of spag is much squishier, so its easier to really jam it in a pot.

    how tall should the containers be for the pet method, or does it depend on the plant species? it seems like you have some plants in tall containers and some in short ones.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, there’s no hard and fast rules on that. In fact, you tell the size of the pot doesn’t matter much!

  • @dinidw3589
    @dinidw3589 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For this stage, Do you stil watering regularly? Or only when water in the bottom dried?

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hit them with water everyday! The water at the bottom never dries.

      @@SVKLOrchids thanks! I have one bulb just showing new grow (pea size).
      1. Could I grow it with PET method and start watering immediately? My PET bottle only have 2 layers (leca/hydroton 2/3, moss 1/3 at top). Is it OK? Bark is hard to find in Indonesia. We have charcoal, coconut shell here.
      2. Should I put my catasetum outside with full sun and full rain or indoor? It's rainy season now in Indonesia.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dinidw3589 That should work! Keep your plant dry until the new roots are four inches long.

  • @Muffin21814
    @Muffin21814 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Stephen, I planted mine with lava rock and charcoal on the bottom and cypress mulch on top. The problem is they were all in a sorry state when I got them. I'm talking super soggy wet, alot of the bulbs were rotten, some just rotted away in the pot. I am worried if I should water now or let them dry alittle since they were soon bad. Or should I water real good??? ( help!!??)

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough to say without photos! I’d water if there is active growth. Maybe let dry for a few days?
