    • National Chambal Sanctuary, also called the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary, is spread in three states namely Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

    • Sanctuary has been declared for the protection of Critically Endangered gharial, the red-crowned roof turtle and the Gangetic river dolphin.
    • Chambal River, on either side has mazes of ravines with many sandy beaches.
    • Perennial Chambal river is a tributary of Yamuna river. It originates on the southern slope of the Vindhyan Range in district Indore, Madhya Pradesh and ends at Pachnada near Bhareh in Uttar Pradesh. The name pachnada has come as five rivers namely Chambal, Kwari, Yamuna, Sind, Pahuj, meet at Pachnada.
    • More than 270 resident as well migratory birds have been listed in the area. Some of the resident birds of the sanctuary which are visible throughout the year in the sanctuary include Red naped ibis, Painted Storks, Knob billed ducks, Lesser whistling teals, Cormorants, Larks, Egrets, Great thick knee, Eurasian thick knee, Owlets, and so on.

    • The next important mammal that finds a suitable home in chambal is Gangetic river dolphin.
    • Many of the visitors come to Chambal river for Indian skimmer. It is also called Indian scissors-bill.
    • They have short upper mandible and a longer lower mandible.
    • The birds forage for food by flying low, over the water with the bill open and the lower mandible skimming through the water.
    • In India it is found in northern and central India along the Ganges and its tributaries. They are more widespread in winter and are found in coastal estuaries of western and eastern India.
    • The migratory birds that visit the sanctuary include Bar headed-goose, Ruddy shelduck, Brown headed and black headed gulls, Northern shoveller, Pintail, Greater flamingo, Little ringed plover, Black winged stilts, small pratnicole etc
    • Demoiselle crane is a passing migrant to the Chambal sanctuary. It visits the sanctuary between September to November and stay there for about a week before it moves for its next destination.
