I think it’s more telling when the boss calls Aurelio to ask why he punched his son. “I hear you struck my son” “Yes sir, I did” “Why?” “Because he stole John Wick’s car…and killed his dog” “…oh”
One thing I loved about this movie. They didn't do some flashback and show John being a bad ass. They had a mob boss, a man who is feared and respected in his own right. Tells the audience how fucking scared of this man they should be and how fucked Iosef is.
The one fella there had it spot on. This is a textbook example of a scene where you hype up the big bad guy, but this time they're doing it for the protagonist. It's a huge subversion of normal storytelling and done absolutely beautifully in this movie.
The character build and reveal in this movie is a masterpiece. The slow start getting aquainted with his emotional state. The problem being mugged and having his dog killed. And then the slow building anticipation having others talk about John slowly teasing the character. Until the sledgehammer scene reveal. Setting expectation really high with near perfect delivery. You know he is imposing but you don't know specifics. these get revealed in the actual action scenes with the continentals inner workings. Great writing
@@kevinboudreaux7860 IMO, the first one had better be the Best one or Close to it. That is the only way to have a great series of movies. Like Back to the Future. The 2nd and 3rd were close to the 1st/the Original. (IMO)
The most hilarious thing about this movie is that Vigo's son seemed to be the only person in that whole organization who didn't know who John Wick was. Even at the gas station, when he was hassling him, the guy with him stepped and apologized.
That was Victor and for a long time I thought he knew who John was too, but he couldn't have or he wouldn't have participated in the mugging. Also, when they're at Aurelio's and Victor says that Viggo's not going to be happy and Aurelio says Viggo will understand, Victor looks confused. I think he was mainly there to keep Iosef from causing trouble in public.
There is a small detail that is really nice to in this scene. The father drinks before the son enters. He even offers a drink to his son, but does not share one with him. I think it is because in Russia to share a drink shows respect for one an other, but he has lost some respect for his son so he gives the drink but don`t want to share one with him. I think the son even rases the glass for a cheers but does not get one.
It could of also been he was planning to punch his son the entire time and knew he was probably going to puke it up. The drink the father was drinking was probably top shelf stuff, the stuff he offered his son... probably was not.
The detail i noticed is the vodka, he pours "average" vodka per se to toast with his son (screw on cap) fully knowing he was going to hit him and later he pours himself good vodka (cork cap) to drink by himself, small but telling detail of what he thinks of his son
This is one of the most epic and best scenes in the entire John Wick series. The writing and acting was simply brilliant and executed to perfection. The way they reversed the traditional narrative and had the villain terrified of the protagonist was brilliant and a masterpiece. You can just feel how terrified Vigo and everyone else is of John Wick.
What I loved about John Wick was that they really turned it around. Usually everyones scared of the bad guy and somehow through the power of friendship the good guys prevail. But in John Wick every bad guy is scared shitless of John because of his reputation in the underworld
I like how Vigo gives his son the cheaper vodka, so it burns when it comes back up after he punches him, to inflict more pain, then when Vigo goes to the bar and takes out the better vodka for himself as he won't waste it on his son.
i always thought it was the reverse. He's "celebrating" his son's return because he obviously care about him So he bust out the "big boy" Vodka. High class, big quality, mega expensive, the one you bring for family and friends. But since Iosef fucked up, he take away the vodka out of his son, taking away the expensive Vodka out of him since he never deserved it. Viggo then would pick a cheaper bottle for himself alone. He maybe prefer the taste of something he's more familiar to. Maybe a drink that he cheerish and comforts him, knowing what will happen to his son. But hey I know jackshit about Vodka and Russian culture, and other comment suggest other ideas. So who knows? I'm just some random internet nerd who liked the movie and the scene.
@@ThompsonExpress it might well be mate, I think I read it somewhere that it was stronger perhaps so it'd burn as it came back up when he punched him and then took the better stuff for himself, will need to see if I can find that explanation on it. A great way to show your disappointed in someone lol
4:23 this guy is right, in movies its always the villain or antagonist that the viewers should be afraid of but in john wick its the other way around although this slightly changed in 3 and 4 where the CEO of CEO's are finally involved in bringing down john wick
This brief background introduction into the person "John Wick" shows that John Wick is regarded by those who know him as a "Force of Nature" nigh unstoppable.
To touch on the drink scene. In Russian culture, if you pour a drink for you and someone else, especially pertaining to business/deals, and don't drink for the glass, it means you will not support/stand with them. So in this case his father will not stand with his son, because he knows how screwed he is.
Another thing, apparently vodka is the worst alcohol to throw up as it burns your whole throat when it comes out. So he purposefully gave him vodka to teach him a lesson.
The interesting thing to think about is John probably let’s it go if they didn’t kill the dog. He didn’t want back in, had a pretty good history with the father. Probably makes a call to the dad and tells him what the kid did and they work it out. Kid gets send to another country for a while in exile or something. Killing the last gift he dead wife gave him was just to big to let go.
It’s funny that they only think it’s crazy that he killed three men after he says with pencil like the killing three guys part wasn’t important or anything
It's possible to kill three men with a pencil, I'm a kempoca with a brown belt of the fourth level and in self-defense classes, well we never talk about pencils but in prisons they make piercing knives out of Papier-mâché, so use a pencil and just a question of whether to have it or not. but for those who understand what I mentioned in the previous lines, you also know that the pencil is only used to deliver the final blow, in other words, John knows something about martial arts.
I Find it VERY UNUSUAL, That Viggo didn't INFORM His Son, about someone like John Wick. As a Man who's Head of a Top Gangster Family, would still Know what John is Still capable of doing, if Anyone was to do ANYTHING WRONG to Him or His Family.Viggo is responsible for what His son did to John and the Puppy, by NOT INFORMING the Son to stay out of John's area/ life or property/car.
And fo think i got so much sh*t fir liking krany as a teenager now im 35 and hes more popular than ever. I liked him from lords of dogtown and the matrix but everyone said he couldn't act and i was stupid for liking him. Lok whos lsughing now lol
