    I received a Swytch email stating that they are upgrading motors for those expecting the Oct 2018 batch. There is also a 1 month delivery delay as a result. Stats of the new motor: 70% less rolling resistance, 20% lighter, 25% higher torque.

    I’m on the list for the next batch but already recently bought an eBrompton. The large bag is only a little smaller than the one I have for my M6R and carries enough to be useful. The fitment is very well designed and it’s a quality product. Doesn’t have any of the issues you get with bought in bits. Very very impressed with it. Clearly it’s a new 2020 model and the issues have been programmed out. The delivery is smooth and predictable and it doesn’t leap away if you’re manoeuvring slowly such as through gates on a cycle path. I have absolutely no complaints. The Swytch will be for my M6R 2017 bike. Will be fun to compare.

      @@DrJamesT Not yet. There's been customs delays for the U.S. Stricter regulations on lithium batteries being shipped. Especially imported. But I've gotten constant updates from Swytch about the process. They've even upgraded us to a newer model wheel and motor for the inconvenience.

      So I finally got mine. Got everything hooked up. I love it. The only thing I have to get used to, is having weight (battery) on the handle moving with my turn and it catching on to the c bag. I thought of modifying a mount that places where the bag clip is. Maybe in the future. I have a back pack, so I can place my bag back there for now.

    Excellent video showing the Brompton installation and great to know that the official Brompton luggage bags can still be used with the swytch kit. Only thing missing on the installation is the install of the brake sensors - would like to see how this is done. Looking forward to my kit arriving.

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Massimo Stefani break sensor is optional. In my opinion is not needed. The motor is cut off as soon as you stop pedaling. This only works for people who stop pedaling when they break.

    Fantastic choice no doubt about it but as with many things in life ( you can’t have everything ) a front hub motor means removing the front dynamo that powers the front and back lights and to me that is a waste of a good upgrade to my Brompton . I realize that the lights can be powered by the same battery running the hub motor but then again it is an additional load on the battery ( even if small ) . Well done swytch

  • @DrJamesT

    Dear All, I'm in the process of installing the kit I bought. The extension bar height was 2cm too short for the old T Bag, which has the plastic handle giving a 35cm height. I could chop off the plastic handle, which is too drastic for me. Or buy the new Brompton Roll top Bag (22cm height), which doesn't have the plastic handle sticking up. The extension bar raises the battery bag 6cm in height. Shame that I needed 8cm to clear the T bag frame.

  • @mikeymop

    Does the swytch work well without a battery just like the Brompton Electric?
    It's appealing to me that I can use it with and without the battery. But I prefer the broader ecosystem of the classic Bromptons.

    I find the point that you have to hammer the front fork in rather disturbing; to me that says that the kit isn't _really_ optimised for the Brompton. How hard is it then to remove the front wheel when you get the inevitable puncture?

  • @rollingthunder4
    @rollingthunder4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have converted my 2 Bromptons with Bafang 1kw at about £1k per kit.
    The downsides are that you lose the back fold but not the others so you can still 2/3 fold them and you need battery power to cycle (but not push or freewheel) at all times as the Nylon internal drive gear is engaged when the pedal is.....
    The upsides are -
    Plenty of power! (technically illegal on UK roads at present). I cycle at 15-20mph ona mid-range setting of 3-5 out of 9 and this yields 30-35 mile range.
    Fairly light with motor and battery weighing in at about 4k each. The battery i use is the largest currently available at 17.5ah.
    The batteries can be charged off bike and carrying one or even 2 spares is not a problem weightwise.
    These motors fit any 68mm bottom bracket bike and i swap one over toa road bike or an MTB in the Winter.
    I also have adapters for chainring sizes from 42-60. Rings from 54-60 really make a difference for road and light track use...
    Hope this helps👍🏻

      Ride On Cycling the original kit is not perfect- the mount needed conductive grease. There are many in the forum showing thousands of miles in their speedometer. I have done 500 miles. I sent it back once for a blown fuse that I can fix myself but it was still under warranty. Fix took 3 weeks. Their customer support have improved a lot. Their new battery weighs a lot less but the mount design is the same. I have ridden the bike through many london rainy days. Motor is probably the most robust part. Members are now swapping their big batteries with new smaller ones on their own for £80. It’s great for hackers / tweakers because most parts are off the shelf.

  • @slidingdownthehill
    @slidingdownthehill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    thanks for that - i tried an e-brompton today - and it was pretty impressive to say the very least. I'm sorely tempted.. but now having seen this I've got a good comparison. The e-brompton does have a lower centre of gravity bringing stability - but you're losing the bag access which for me and i guess many - this is a big negative. Not forgetting the massive price tag and the non upgrade to e brompton offering.

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      slidingdownthehill if you haven’t ridden on an electric bike before, you were impressed by the feel of the motor propelling you. The e Brompton dealer claims the fork was reinforced to meet EU standards. There is a bigger bag available that hold both the battery and your own items. You can fold with the battery intact. The downer for me is lack of handle bar throttle option and acceleration configuration. The e Brompton motor accelerated pretty hard at setting 1 while I was pedaling through a tight u turn making it dangerous. Brompton took my feedback and claimed they have reconfigured it. When I presented this problem to Oliver he showed me how I can configure the acceleration myself. He had the lowest acceleration programmed in as default. Reserving the full throttle for experienced riders. He has a cyclist mindset. Whereas Brompton hired Williams Engineering, a formula 1 car company, petroheads with little experience in commuting with a bike. Brompton parts are proprietary, meaning you have to buy from them. I expect a premium price on their battery. Swytch uses mostly off the shelf parts that could be bought even when the company disappears. Sure the parts are from China but Oliver has been selling electric bikes for 5 years he knows the best value suppliers from a country that have been using electric bikes for decades.

    • @slidingdownthehill
      @slidingdownthehill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Big League !! thanks for the info, I experienced the shock of throttle going round a short corner in the ebrom as well, I found it for a first time ride very scary. ( they're excellent bikes , but once you've ridden one for a while control is key !!) I'm pretty well sold on the swych , the off the shelf concept makes the product pretty well future proof. I don't mind brompton doing all the dev and charging £ for it , but the lockin is somewhat more expensive. One q about swytch is the connector water proof if you have to ride without battery ? (the demo looked pretty exposed)

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. That’s one of those questions I asked Oliver. He chose a rust free alloy so it would be weatherproof. He said he might include a cover for further weather proofing. E Brompton chose a spring action auto shut cover, which you can see in my eBrompton review.

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you tested the E Brompton recently, your shock is evidence that their new acceleration configuration isn’t slow enough or their pedal sensor is too sensitive. Riders will have to cruise around corners. U turns will be challenging.

    • @slidingdownthehill
      @slidingdownthehill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Big League hi there , did you see the fitting of the brake cable sensors ? It's the one thing I've yet to see done on a brompton. I've see another demo using another bike where it looks simple - but i think on a brompton that might not be the case , appreciate you only had the 'tester' for a few hours ! I dropped them an email with a few questions - alas no reply / they're busy. Also for some reason their own yt videos are 'comments disabled' , which doesn't exactly invite comments / questions ! Nice review. I'm still waiting for my Brompton Swytch Kit to arrive. I'm hoping it'll be by the end of December or the middle of January. It's been a bit frustrating getting a response from their customer service, and a lot of other backers have expressed this looking for any answers. How about you? Did you get your kit already? But it's a bit comforting to see that it actually exist. I am hoping that I didn't get scammed by some Britsh folks, but that the Brits show good faith and represent how good their company and product is. I'll be glad to brag about how good the kit is when I get it.

      Dante Adela I am in the second batch, which is now delayed until mid-Jan. Only the first batch got their kit. I bought mine with AMEX, which is very good at refunding if the company doesn’t deliver. I also bought it directly through their site, so there is no middle man to dispute. The emails they send of delays is ample evidence. Their CEO stopped responding to my emails. Their announcement that they have investors now should be reassuring. However, I am not expecting that they fulfill their claim that the Brompton sized motor will also receive upgrades as their wording in the email has been vague. These motors are for niche bikes, more challenging due to smaller size. The same goes for their high performance motors as they are niche.

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m still willing to wait as I had kickstarter products that took a whole year after it’s suggested time of delivery. It’s still the lowest priced kit I can buy. If something else comes up that offers more, I’ll be ringing AMEX.

      Dante Adela regarding “they are British” although natural, is not strong objective evidence whereas investors is obtained is in gauging a business. British, German, Japanese - companies are very capable of making unethical decisions as a result of being desperate. Swytch pricing is very low and it doesn’t give him much flexibility. All he has is time. What’s different between UK vs a third world country is regulation. Ombudsman are there to help us little consumers. These rules are in place to prevent scamming. Evidence that scams have existed prior. I don’t know where Kickstarters lie in the spectrum as crowd funding is very different than buying a product direct. This is why I bought it off their website instead.

You mention that if user is contemplating the 50 mile unit with the 4Kg addition of weight, that user should test drive it first, how would the user accomplish this? Pre order is 35% off so in about 4.5 months I would receive the kit, install it, and test it out. Is the 4Kg that much of an addition to the handlebars? Is it not as safe? I really want to pull the trigger on this. It looks fantastic. Nice vid.

      Extension: amzn.to/2OCnjx8 . If you are in London you can visit their factory warehouse in hackney (one seen in the video) to demo their huge variety of bikes with the kit installed. You can even bring your own bike and have it installed temporarily. Putting heavy weight on the handle bar directly changes...the handling. Not an issue for those with strong arms. If you are commuting 25 miles I would buy a second charger to leave at work. Instead of getting a bigger battery.

      It's a fair comment, I've been monitoring their customer service, it's not good. Good thing is most parts are supplied by third party chinese no name companies. meaning you can purchase them cheaply on eBay. If this company goes bankrupt you can still replace a lot of the parts including the motor and battery. Here's the ebay link of the PAS Disc. Make sure the number of magnets match: www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=electric+pedal+assist+sensor&_sacat=0

      Emailed Oliver, with a response to say my complaints ware unnecessary about the lack of customer service, because they cant respond because they have real people with real jobs. (what about the people how pay a lot of money to buy there kits) told that I had to send photos and send my sensor back so they could replace it. Witch is far but now left with another wasted week or so they can replace. opt to just buy the sensor on ebay. Glad am not the only one how thinks there customer service is not good. What baffles me about the 'official e-brompton' is how long they are taking to release it (still not available in US early 2019) and that it only goes 15MPH.

    have you checked out the add-e kit?

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like how Add-e doesn't require you to saw off the air pump holder. Unlike the other friction drive kit. Main advantage of friction drive: it's compact. disadvantages: lose friction in wet weather, wearing out tires 2x as fast. www.add-e.at/_pdf/Brompton_EN.pdf

    • @uwelancier2316
      @uwelancier2316 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrJamesT For 2 years I have the add-e on my Brompton: No, you don't loose friction, not even in very wet, freezing and muddy weather conditions.
      Wearing out the rear tire is true: after maybe 2000 km I now have to switch the rear and front tire (Schwalbe Marathon) and will probably require a new set within the next 2000 km.
      Other advantages: Complete system is very light - 2.1 kg including the 200Wh battery.
      It's very understatement: Battery is a aluminium bottle in a bottleholder, the tiny motor within the rear triangle almost invisible.
      Mounting the system is easy. An experienced mechanic should be finished in 15 minutes tops. Dismounting may be done in under a minute.
      After proper mounting of add-e there's no interference with the folding, except perhaps that the seatpost sits a bit earlier (on the motor instead of the replaced bumper)
      When not in use there's no friction at all. And leaving the Battery at home leaves just 900g weight on the bike. Dismounting (as well as re-attaching) the motor takes 15 seconds leaving maybe 100g "dead" weight.
      And the next Generation is coming: The Add-eNEXT will have wireless sensors so mounting will be even easier and the folding untroubled.
      And even though this is by far the easiest to mount I know of, there are at least annother 4 friction drive sets that fit on the Brompton (more or less well).

    The Swytch kit from the Panda E bikes team is pretty impressive but is not proving easy to fit on a lot of Bromptons now the kits have started to arrive. The nano system www.nanoelectricbikes.co.uk is tried and trusted as a reliable retro fit kit developed specifically for Bromptons. Dutch state 10-12 weeks wait for pre-order ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, I've been waiting 40 weeks and I still have AT LEAST 4 more weeks wait. OK Covid got in the way, but that could account for... 8-10 weeks delay NOT 30!!!
    I'm with the other comments - sounds great and as a pre-order price it's close to other kits, but I can not recommend it with this sort of delay.
    Go get another kit and be riding in weeks.
    I got 10 people very interested in the swytch and they all wanted to see mine before ordering... 6 have since ordered AND RECEIVED either other kits or full bikes and I'm still waiting having now lost the entire spring and summer seasons to ride the electric dream 😡

    These are quite reasonably priced and tidy kits.
    However, I think the Grin Technologies kit with 500W SAW20 motor and a 36V 12.6 Ah battery is better. It will do 15mph with no pedalling on the default controller firmware, and with the Cycle Analyst V3 should do 19.5mph; although I question doing more than 15mph on a Brompton, as the brakes are not really capable of dealing with stopping effectively at such speeds.
    The Grin kit, including brushless DC motor wheel, torque washers, controller and throttle, costs around 400GBP. Batteries like mine can be had from Ebay for 200GBP. My kit has no PAS, eBrake kit and no diagnostics display; these were superfluous to my needs.
    The SAW20 motor wheel drops straight into the fork dropout lugs, requiring no force fitting or bending of the fork, unlike lot of other Brompton electric kits.
    I had to CAD/3D print and fab a connector for my battery to enable me to wire it up, so the featured kit has an advantage, in that my conversion is a bit of a hack and required extra work, but the featured kit is only 250W, which does not cut it for my requirements.

    • @DrJamesT
      @DrJamesT  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dewex Dewex regular Brompton riders can easily clock more that 15mph. I do question if the thin front fork can handle the high torque of a 500w motor. The torque washers it comes with must be a beast. I wonder if I can buy the torque washers separately.

    • @dewexdewex
      @dewexdewex 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrJamesT The washers are similar to those on the un-modded bike in their form, but they look like CNC laster cut+bent 2mm stainless steel parts. Contact Grin in Canada and ask them if they can supply. If not, the CAD for them is quite simple and there are plenty of small companies with CNC laser cutters and press brakes who you could get to make some.
      As for the torque issues, I cannot comment yet. I have been running my kit on the bike for 2 months only. It's also running on 36V and not 48V, so the torque is lower.
      I have done some steep hills and rough field riding and there don't seem to be any frame geometry changes which would lead to failure yet.
      I think the kits requiring fork spreading are more likely to induce failure in the fork brazing than the torque from the motor on the dropouts.
      The fit on the Grin kit motor is quite good. I'd say the clearance on the axle flats in the dropout is between 0.5 and 1mm.

    • @dewexdewex
      @dewexdewex 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DrJames if the fork boss can handle the emergency stopping forces and moments of a 16 stone rider, I think it can handle being accelerated forwards from a standing start by a 500w motor. The only torque failure I have seen on a Brompton was a chain ring stripping from the crank arm on a friend’s bike once. He was probably 14 st.

    • @dewexdewex
      @dewexdewex 5 ปีที่แล้ว
