    I can remember going to bed after this TV program when I was in High School & talking about the episode with my best friend the next day.

    I think every person in the media should be required to watch all 5 seasons of Lou Grant. Probably the best education they will get.

      rob ribant, many have seen the show. At least a whole generation of reporters were inspired to go into journalism because of this show, and it was used in journalism classes both at its time and has been ever since to present issues in media and journalism for class consideration and discussion.

      @@inkyguy The show came up in the wake of the movie ALL THE PRESINDENT´S MEN
      with Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman
      Before this, scenarios with TV stations were top. That one had changed it ... for some years at least I know of some elder movies and novels those stories were based on

    I love those detective stories they put in the show, they belong to the best of the complete series I think.

    These shows were decades before their time while being germane and true to their own era. l recall these times well, and such a quality series helps bring it all back while offering profound perspective as well. Thank you, sincerely.

      Or, it shows how little some things change. The fundamental things. Like corruption, greed, denial, sickness....

      How old are you Cyntia Lyman? , when I have watched the episodes as a University student in the late Seventies and Eighties they were right on time but some topics are timeless for this they stayed actual.
      Seeing those episodes for the first time in chronological order I see that the environmental topics must have got to the show. because the Woodcutting Scenes disappered very early on in this season. Usually this happens not before the secon season that a tailer becomes renewed so quick

    This show does point out one particular thing that the CIA and the FBI are so good at and that is trampling on the constitutional rights of US citizens. Hoover's time at the FBI has been investigated and has shown that this highhanded behaviour has been going on for years, that is why this presentation is so relevant. It is still going on today, Even though, this being fictional it is entirely believable. Thumbs up for the writers.

    Lou grant truly an inspiration to watch. His role as Mary Richards boss in Mary Tyler Moore show. & Now as an editor on his own show 'The Lou Grant Show.'

    That's the first thing that struck me about this episode was the name of the country that Ted worked for (Teletex). I instantly thought that it was similar to The Falcon and the Snowman. The story must have broke about this time (the actual movie came out in 1985)

  • @georgfriedrichhandel4390
    @georgfriedrichhandel4390 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    This episode is definitely the precursor to the film, "The Falcon and the Snowman". Boyce and Lee were arrested right around the time this episode was being filmed. The book about this case was not published until 1979 so the feature film may have been based on - or at least inspired by - this episode. How many other series can make such a claim?

    This should have been the last episode of Season One... as a cliffhanger, this would have secured an audience for next season... at least the first episode of season two.

    • @thomash.schwed3662
      @thomash.schwed3662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you. This episode certainly seems as though it was originally intended to be the season finale, particularly with that last scene where Lou is left still wondering who on his City desk is on the take from Intelligence- a cliffhanger if ever I've seen one! Of course, the penultimate scene was the perfect setup with lifelong friends Lou and Charlie falling into the trap of thinking it was potentially each other and each reacting the same way.

    I just noticed something. When Rossi told Lou about Billie going through Rossi's things Lou didn't seem to care but when Rossi did it to Billie in a later episode, Lou threatened Rossi with violence.

    • @Teobi1
      @Teobi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Billie would also get herself assignments by inviting Lou for dinner or drinks and acting all shy. She was always coyly flirting with Lou and Art. Rossi had her pegged right from the beginning, ha

    • @Teobi1
      @Teobi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      aka the one with the Professor from Gilligan's Island in it. :D Hey Tank,you're pretty much an expert on Lou Grant. Do you know why Billie and Rossi never got together? It's like the writers were building up the chemistry and antagonism between the two characters but it never really went anywhere. She even went with Art... the most sexist pig on the whole team!

    • @tankstoner8496
      @tankstoner8496 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teobi1 Robert Walden may have had something to do with that as he was both unwittingly and indirectly responsible for Rebecca Balding getting fired after 3 episodes.

    • @Teobi1
      @Teobi1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was under the impression that she was fired because she was too young for the role. Or too pretty, or something. I liked Carla and was sorry she didn't last long. I like Billie too, but... I dunno, something about the character I find irritating sometimes. She's a sweet girl but I find she lacks genuine warmth.

    The sugar must've been the reason why Robert Walden was so wiry and energetic during his run around the game show horn.

      Robert Waldren was a member of the country club where my brother in law, ,a respected tennis teaching pro, & my sister managed the tennis. I remember seeing this actor a few times. He was always hyperactive. This is his nature and although a good actor, he essentially plays himself in this series.

    Love this show .... and I miss newspaper journalism - the written word is far superior to the ignorant children in the press room whining every day. As the Middle East Peace agreement is being signed, the press question is: “do you think Trump should wear a mask?” ... just hand out lollipops 🍭

    Wait, I'm confused. Isn't the CIA agent Driscoll? I thought that was obvious

    • @1locust1
      @1locust1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought it was the slow poke typist Kellum. He fit the profile Mrs. Pynchon described in her story about the Kentucky reporter back east.

    • @thomash.schwed3662
      @thomash.schwed3662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, I'm under the impression that it was either Driscoll or Kellam, or even, potentially, both. Driscoll spoke as though he knew how the connections would be made and Kellam certainly matched the profile described by Mrs. Pynchon. However, Driscoll's problem, which we learned in the pilot, makes me wonder if Intelligence would have considered him reliable. Then again, that same problem might have given him an almost perfect cover.

    It's almost black and white.

    • @thomash.schwed3662
      @thomash.schwed3662 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're probably referring to this being a black and white issue. If so, I agree.
      However, I think that if this episode had been filmed in black and white, that would have made the point even more clear as it would have given the asthetic of the McCarthy and HUAC era, when, it was said, everyone was considered suspect.

    PS The Rape 'joke' was not funny, in the least. Lousy line, like the "mushrooms" remark but Asner made the best of it.

      It was a very funny line and a shame wit like that is censored in this era. The joke worked on several levels. Stop raping our culture with your Puritanism
