My theory about this song (and not unlikely knowing Rupert) is that the narrator has a split personality of some kind. Many of us find we have aspects of our personality that we can't manage or get a handle on. If that side of yourself (that maybe you don't even like) ends up being what your lover prefers it can be totally disheartening but Rupert's BEST quality was always his affable wit so he tells the story in a cute way. Just one way to look at it.
