Two super easy recipes made with left overs. What I like about your cooking and eating is that you never use processed food.

Thank you for this video Jane! We have finally started doing ding cuisine in our house- I also love how quick and easy quiche is- bung it all in, add some cream and cheese and you've got a filling, simple meal! You are not 'just a housewife who cooks', you are a housewife who is showing some of us (slightly) younger housewives how to cook and frugally manage our homes. I emigrated from my country a long time ago and I didn't have the benefit of a mother or older sister to show me the ropes. I figured it out eventually, but your videos are so helpful and down to earth that I can really relate to them. Thank you for taking the time to do this valuable work!

I have always been the worst at letting things get lost in the fridge and go bad. Since Ive retired and especially with this inflation I write down all the things I need to use in the week and keep it on the front of my refrigerator and its really helped. These easy use it up recipes are great ideas.

You could make the "same" quiche ('s) without dough and use 10 ml lactose free milk per egg. That makes a delicious gluten and lactose free lunch/ dinner with a soup. Lightly Oil your quiche pan. Add some cooked cubed potato/rice/pasta in or at the side. gluten free bread toasted on the side is nice too...

I find it very difficult to make smaller meals. I was raised in a family of 7, worked in the food industry making up to 300 meals.... so hard to think small . I do waste food due to not being able to think small. Thank you for helping by discussing 4 servings by meal planning. MB

Due to rising electricity prices, I fry off my veg and meat ( if I'm using meat) for a casserole on the hob and then cook it in my slow cooker. I also only use the oven once a week and always fill it - so earlier this week I made pasties and flapjack and roasted sweetpotato to use later. Brilliant use up of veg Jane, thank you!

Enjoying your videos very much! Here is my latest "fast food" find. I keep a bag of lentils and a bag of frozen spinach on hand
at all times. It only takes about 20 minutes to cook lentils seasoned up with garlic, onion, cumin, or curry spices, then add the whole bag of spinach and enjoy topped with a little yogurt or creme fresh.

The skill of scratch cooking is one of the best things to develop to save money. It's become a bit of a lost art with the younger generations and it does take more time and planning, which can be tough for folks who have a lot going on with jobs and kids. I am so grateful to early influences in my life who sparked a passion for it. Jane, I just adore your videos. You have such a gift and are very generous to share it.

I cooked meat loaf yesterday along with mashed potatoes, roasted califlower, broccoli and carrots; plus, a salad. This was my effort to use up my food stash and have leftovers into this week. Yes, food costs have risen especially meat prices in the USA into 2022.

Why not give retirement budgeting a try before you actually give up work. For the year before I actually retire I lived on what would be my retirement income plus additional costs that I knew would disappear when I did retire. Things like addition fuel for my travel to work, union fees, professional fees .This did a few things for me.
      1. To allowed me to tweet the budget month on month until I got it somewhere near right.
      2. It boosted my saving pot because everything I earned over the amount that would be my pension income went straight into savings.
      3. This took away the pressures of worrying if I could manage on the income I would have if and when I finally retired.

Jane and Mike such wonderful ideas for using up left over food, Jane you are such a very good home cook brilliant. It reminds of my greatgrandmother, grandmother and grand aunt who were such good cooks and made their shillings really stretch. Left over foods in each house were often shared and they batched cooked between them, each had certain special dishes so they cooked up enough for the 3 households. They did everything christmas was especially wonderful. Thank you for reminding me of being with them while they cooked and I learned with them. Mike your editing is great 👍.

Really like the look of the quiche. I often make frittata/omelette from leftovers but this would be a nice change. I still have a tube of sausagemeat in the freezer which I was planning to use up this week; had thought of a giant sausage roll/plait, but the idea of making it into a sausage casserole would be nice - plus I have peppers to use up and some cooking bacon odds and ends. I have pasta lovers in the house and think it would go further here with pasta than as a sausage roll, too! Thank you.

I made fajitas tonight so that I could use up bell peppers and tomatoes from my garden. I used a small amount of chicken breast along with some onions and really used quite a few bell peppers that were getting a little shriveled and some small tomatoes that are not big enough to slice for sandwiches. It felt good not to waste that produce. Bell peppers and tomatoes are very expensive in the grocery store here.

Because of the rising prices of food, and sometimes the lack of available goods at the stores, one HAS to find ways to be creative with the food you do have on hand. You did a great job using what you had. When I use carrots, I have a veggie brush to clean them instead of scraping the carrots. I found that the carrots stay sweeter in the foods with the skins on. Not sure who came up with this saying but I like the thought: "What you're not changing, you are choosing." Now that our life style cannot stay the same as it was, one has to change your thinking and doing. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.

I had a few strips of bacon, a few slices of deli ham, a few mushrooms, broccoli, a half bag of cheese, a little heavy cream and four eggs. I also had one premade pie crust. We love left overs , we all love a Thursday night when I heat all the bits up and spread it out in our plates . We all have a good laugh at the combinations we end up with . And we always have enough and make do . All the food is accounted for . My mum taught me how do be food frugal when I was a kid as she only got a small amount of house keeping in those days and it had to spread across everything and gosh we ate well and never really went with out . We just never got store bought stuff . Amen to that . We have huge food shortages here at the moment and it’s funny listening to people say we have no food in the supermarket. We have so much fresh food and good staples just means you have to cook food and not buy it from a packet . Thank you for your video it’s always a joy to watch xxx

There was usually a tasty dessert but when we were full with our dinner meal we would save dessert for supper so Mom doesn’t cook Sunday supper, hence the FFY.

Since changing the budget around this past couple of months. We have started only eating out a maximum of once per month and sometimes not at all, down from 2-4 times. I cook from scratch and keep trying to come up with more, new to me recipes, to help avoid food fatigue.
So far, in Saskatchewan Canada the most noticeable price increases is in the grocery stores and restaurants. Both of which are rising very quickly. The price for gas (for vehicles) hasn't changed too much in this province, I know other provinces have seen a large increase in it. So far with electricity and natural gas, I haven't seen any changes in my monthly bills yet. I'm sure the rest of what is still staying fairly stable, price wise, will be going up in the near future. All the more reason to get used to being more and more frugal in all areas of life.
I have a bunch of sad looking vegies in the refrigerator to pull out and see what can be done with them. Your quiche looked so good, that will be on the list. Hubby will enjoy a pasta dish too. Not sure what else, I cubed a couple pork chops and browned them off last night so will make something with that. Looks like I'll be in the kitchen most of the afternoon. LOL

Oh we are seeing rising food prices across the board I think. Meat seems super pricey, but produce and canned foods are also up. I’m really stunned at the “sale” prices in the weekly circular! I just make sure we use everything. No waste! I’ve been saying that for ages, but with extra emphasis now! Love today’s video, as always. Some great use it up food ideas there Jane. I too am having a use it up week as I am going on holiday later in the month and need to empty the fridge and don’t really want to leave half packets of things in the pantry. Even though you show us your bits and bats your finished meal always looks too good to be made out of odds and ends.

How could you make that lovely looking quiche and then not be able to eat any of it? Same with the cakes you recently made. I did try to grow fruit and veggies last year but it wasn't a huge success so I need to try harder this year.

Everything looks delicious and no waste is a big bonus!
I haven’t made a quiche in a long time, I think I’ll make a few individual size ones and freeze the extras. I love to add broccoli, bacon and cheddar to my quiche.
Sadly all dairy products as well as meats and poultry have been increasing in price. There are noticeable increases in the prices every time I shop.
I’ve been eating fried potatoes with onions and sausage or bacon bits and cheese for my breakfast or lunch lately. I cook 6-8 potatoes in my instant pot and refrigerate them after they cook down. That way they take less time to fry when I want fried potatoes. They are relatively inexpensive and taste good.
I’m using meat and poultry in casseroles, soups and stews or chili to stretch a smaller amount of the protein sources. More of a flavoring ingredient instead of the main component of the meal.
I’m going to make some crepes and flatbread or flour tortillas to use as wraps as well as bake a loaf of gluten free bread this weekend. Gluten free products are so expensive but making them at home makes them more affordable.

You can put almost anything in a quiche. I used to use cooked frozen broccoli, tinned salmon and a bit of cheese with eggs, I could make two quiches from one tin of salmon

Hi Jane! What's got more expensive here in Wales? Everything!
We only leave peelings, which go to our hens and bones, everything else has to be eaten.
Your sausage casserole recipe looks great, I never thought of adding bacon to the sauce and will be trying it next week.

Oh my those dishes looked delicious! Here in the middle U.S., prices have risen on all meats (beef, pork, poultry and fish) plus dairy and cheese. Other items have increased as well but meat and dairy on have increased the most. I have cut back on the amount of meat I buy and I use less of it. I grew up eating leftovers and so I have continued to do that as an adult and I don't mind them at all. Many dishes I think can taste even better after they've had a day or two to sit in the refrigerator and have all the spices meld together. I know many people who don't eat leftovers at all and I just don't understand it. I appreciate how you are not wasteful of the food that you have and I am really focusing on not wasting food. I tend to be bad at using up produce before it rots and I want to do better at that. Thank you for your inspiration!

Thank you for your video ! This is very helpul ! I decided to decrease my food budget and it's the moment that shops make offers on products I buy regularly. So, here I am, checking my pantry, reminding thhow many times in the year this particular products are on offer, so I can buy more and store. After all, if I buy this month, it will still decrease my budget next months...Of course, I'm careful to store only produts I usually buy, won't buy on offer what I don't buy full price !
And I strat thinking about 1 or 2 meals, depending on prices in shop to decide which one : If I wank leeks and find them to expensive, will take cauliflower instead, or reverse...
I buy fresh vegetable very carefully because I know myself : if I don't cook on sunday, it won't be cooked before wednesday or even later...I don't like cooking, I really challenge myself to cook even the most simple things...That's why I try to get as many as dinner as I can in the freezer to have them when I'm back from work.
