Hardstyle Kick Explained 2018 (Classic Kick)

  • This tutorial is your masterclass on how to get a Noisecontrollers / Headhunterz / Wildstylez type of hardstyle kick. It will show you how to create a Classic Hardstyle Kickdrum from scratch. The video is an in-depth showcase of the process of creating a pitched hardstyle kick.
    Plugins used:
    Drumazon
    FabFilter Pro-Q 2
    Izotope Exciter
    Logic Pro 9 stock plugins
    None of these plugins are must-haves in order to create a good hardstyle kick - in fact, it can be done with any stock plugins.
    Keep in mind these effect-chains are not easy to set up (even though I make it look like it) and requires a lot of trial and error in order to achieve a good sound.
    I'll recommend having a reference kick/track in the project at all times during the kick-making process.

    - How did you add that small crunch layer? Where did you get it from or how was it made? It wasn’t explained.
    - Also do you know why when I add more than 7 eq/dist to my 909 the tail sound will start to not change much anymore and becomes more muffled and sound worse the more eq/distortion I add? How do you use so much eq and distortion and your tail just sounds better and better and clear? I tried experimenting so much but still cannot figure it out….

    Do you have to create multiple iterations of the hardstyle kick for different notes or the one you made will sound fine playing the progression? Cause when I tried to use hardstyle bass drum samples and have them go from C to F to G for example it's just doesn't work, sounds terrible, unlike effortless 808s in Trap - you find the root note and it works.

    Great tutorial, a few things I don't understand 1) when you have eq's in series cant you just adjust your curves in pro q to get the same as three instances of logic EQ (it has heaps of bands) and why would it suddenly become stereo enough that you need to keep monoizing it?

  • @SetoNess
    @SetoNess 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Eternize. Great tutorial! I just wanna ask you something related. Did you adds plugins in the master chain or latter in the post production of the video (like EQ or exciter)? Because the drumazon at the begining of the video has some 10~12 Khz content that my drumazon doesn't have. I try even to use 96 Khz and the f response is larger, but it doesn't have that hi end boost.
    Also, It is possible to make a great kick without logic clip distortion? I'm having a bad time trying without it XD

    Interesting way :) I used to take a route closer to this in the past. I'm pretty lazy doe and try to not sample as much. I'm doing things simular to what you do just with different tools. Reason for this is that i don't work stuff so much anymore, trying to do as much as possible with as little as possible as fast as possible. Every time i build something i do it from scratch thus i want it to be simple and fast. Take note that i'm not trying to making any serious music today and only do one season for each project.

    • @Eternize
      @Eternize  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are several methods, and it always depends on the kick - So I would basically try all the below methods out:
      - Adobe Audition. Has a really solid pitch bend, with no artifacts (like you will often find in the logic pitch engine).
      - Kontakt. Has different modes, 2 of them working well for pitching kicks.
      - Any sampler. Depending on the length your kick, you can actually get the cleanest result by putting ur kick in a sampler. Yes this will shorten your kick at higher notes, but there are clever workarrounds.
      All of the above options are valid options :)

    • @Frozentragedy
      @Frozentragedy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eternize thanks man gonna try audition, bc with kontakt theres no way for me it ruins the tail in every algorhytm. Still not happy but until now the best ive tried is the logic engine so... lets try the others

    okay, so, I have a few questions. (because how does someone innovate if they don't know what's important, or why)
    Why do hardstyle kicks focus on the 500-600hz range early on. I understand cutting the bass for distortion, so you get the harmonics for whatever frequency is peaking, but why that range and not say, 800, or 300? What's the technical reason? 500-600 seems to be around B4 to D#5, but a 909's fundamental is about 52hz, or G#1.... which *roughly* makes the intervals of a minor chord??? Is that actually why though?
    And second, further on, what decision is being made to cut or boost any given frequency? is there an ideal frequency curve to follow?
    What are the criteria that a kick is judged on for if it's "good" or not?

    • @Eternize
      @Eternize  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 5-600 range is entirely because of the tonality it produces when distorted heavily. It proves great for both the punch and tail of a 2010-year hardstyle kick. Today the range has been expanded to like 5k for more experimental sounding punches, and the tails don't have that typical 5-600hz boosted tonality anymore - for the most part.
      Cutting before the distortion = no rules. Do whatever gets you closer to your desired sound.
      Cutting after the distortion = balance the kick for optimal loudness and to fit the mix of your track.

    • @therealquade
      @therealquade 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eternize so the kick can really just be anything and it doesn't have to sound like a small angry dog barking through a PVC pipe while jumping on a moog, as long as it sounds good. cool.

  • @nawafr.r6233
    @nawafr.r6233 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is what doesn't really add up to me your main kick after EQ'ing and Distortion should be 80% complete (per a producers judgement) to be fully adjusted when you're splitting the tail and punch so what you basically did was use an incomplete kick then split everything Eq'ed and distorted by doing that you're kinda messing up the signals in the second step but at the same time rectifying things when the only thing that you should've done was go back to the original kick fix the sound to your liking then use a linear phase EQ at the second step by cutting the lows and highs out. So the whole idea of the second step is kick mastering which is what a linear phase is close to doing. I really find the idea of splitting lows and highs a good idea however you are really adding some unnecessary steps because you weren't satisfied with your kick and this creates a lot of confusion. Second step should be the final Step where if you want you could even add reverb add a snare sample for example ,however, there shouldn't be any further Distortion or regular EQ everything adjustment wise on the primary kick should've been done in the first step.

    • @Eternize
      @Eternize  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neither you or I get to choose what steps "should" be incorporated in making a hardstyle kick. Do whatever gets you results..

I am currently working on making a kick with that 2012 Headhunterz sound and in my process of making kicks I also use the technique of bouncing the midi to audio to tweak it further. The problem I sometimes have and is happening in this project again is that when I bounce it I lose a little bit of warmth in the kick/character. It sounds very similar but there is a slight difference. Do you know what might cause this? I can share screenshots of the channel strip and busses or send you the project file if you are interested to have a look at it.

      Most likely you are beyond 0dB when bouncing. That will change the sound, the more you surpass 0dB the bigger the change. Also check for effects on master channel and check your bounce/quick bounce settings.

      @@Eternize Thanks for your response. Going to continue on the kick this weekend and will give it a try! No effects on the master chain so it will probably be the 0dB issue. Which of the quick bounce settings should I be paying attention to that could have an effect? Again many thanks!! These issues can be super frustrating, especially at times when you are making good progress, appreciate it.

      @@thijsvandijk6604 You just need to clip it, and then use no normalisation or clip protection.

      @@Eternize Letting you know that this together with another setting on an audio effect in my chain solved the problem! Thanks a lot!

    Why don’t you upgrade to pro x? You can turn on advanced features and it’s better than Pro 9

      Use this as a guideline - use the concepts, don't replicate it. You'll have to figure out yourself what works and what doesn't :)

    Very nice kick! Thanks for the tut!
    However, it also made me realize how terrible my distortion effects are. They all seem to add a terrible hiss.
    That's gonna need some research :)

      Any clip distortion will work :)
      Distortions ment for "saturation" is another game..

      Hiss might be coming from analog emulation software, just like Waves likes to do. It usually simulates a high noise floor like old analog singal path had. This can be benificial in some situations. But if you're having too much 'hiss' you can do that eq automation trick shown in this video to minimize some of it. Or try a good low or wide band pass.

      Yeah, I'm using clip distortion but I think the source sound isn't perfect enough.

      Marvy Rose Pascua it's just percussion layered, distorted and compressed, like some snares

    • @MetalDavidRulez
      @MetalDavidRulez 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s all layering. You made different versions of the kick and EQ them to create your layers. It’s not percussion/snares.

      Sphane made mine with percussion, though

    • @Hardsonix
      @Hardsonix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can do it with Percussion, you can do it with the Kick itself. You can even do it with white noise. Using EQ and Distortion you can create many different sounds.. just give any punch character by boosting a definite frequency..
