More things dog walkers hate: 1) Dogs with zero manners. The dog walker should not have to train your dog, although we often end up doing that just so not to have a wild monster on the end of the leash. You as the owner are responsible for presenting us with a civilized, socialized dog. Otherwise, if we have to do it, we'll expect you to pay us trainer's fees. 2) Having to walk an un-neutered male. Unless you intend to have your male dog available for breeding, in which case it should be of impeccable pedigree and free from flaws and illness, have your male dog neutered. An un-neutered male dog lives a lonely, anxious life. He cannot go to the dog park to play, he cannot even meet other dogs on the street in case there's a fight, he is worried about issues of turf, and of course, he is very pre-occupied with the opposite sex. Neuter your dog! 3) A dog that won't let the dog walker near it to put on the leash; i.e., not socialized to strangers. Having to chase a dog around the house for fifteen minutes is not our job, and plays havoc with our schedules. 4) Dogs that pull the walker's arm out of its socket. Your dog should be trained to walk mannerly on the leash. If we have to train it, expect us to charge training fees.
I agree! But have you actually had a dog dislocate your shoulder from pulling? I don't doubt that it's possible, I'm just curious if that was a figure of speech or actual personal experience.
Caitlin Swartz I’ve had a dog give me whiplash before - a number of them have also knocked me to the floor, ripped my nails off, hit me whilst running past with gigantic sticks!! The list is endless 😭 And I’ve lost count of the numerous number of bites I’ve encountered! (We’re a pet services company that take on the difficult dogs who have basically been banned from other walkers due to bad behaviour - we are very proud to say that we don’t give up on dogs and we help them through their problems. With some very good results! 😃👍)
Actually an intact dog can live a perfectly fine life and can thrive. It can cause problems if you neuter it and can actually make a dogs fear or aggression worse.
Thank you so much for not talking on and on about subscribing to your channel and other random stuff that has nothing to do with the video like most youtubers do!!!!! It was really nice that your video was only a little under 6min long and I didn't need to skip through half of it just to get to the part that I wanted to see. Keep it up!!!
Thanks SO MUCH Sarah! I totally agree-so many TH-camrs talk FOREVER before getting to the good stuff, and I definitely try to steer clear from that. I'm so happy that you enjoyed it!
You hit it on the nail! I’ve been working with dogs for about 5 years and I too have walked in on some questionable things. I always used to say in my mind “you know I’m coming around this time. Why not just wait?”. All the other points also very much correct. Lol 👏👏👏
1. I've had one person bark at me and when it happened I said you're making fun of me but I make $2000 from this one dog. Which was true, I was petsitting for three weeks. The dude was baffled then I broke down the amount of "physical work" that was required was only for 2 hours a day. He never barked again because he had a newfound respect for dog walkers. 2. I love when people pet the dogs. I walk three dogs together and I still let them play with other dogs. 3. I don't hate white couches, just people who get upset when their dog dirties up their house 4. People get very comfortable with me it's so weird. 5. Never happened, but I'd definitely get irritated
I am shocked you didn't say off leash dogs... that is by far my biggest pet peeve ever. It's scary and takes the control out of your hands. Anyway, love your videos, great to see some dog walking being represented on TH-cam :)
Jenna Micieli OMG SO TRUE! Also, those ppl that see you cross the street cuz your dog is freaking out, yet cross to your side of the street again (which forces you to cross the street AGAIN). Drives me crazy
I started my own little dog walking buisness and im paying 5 a walk or. 5 an hour but im also 12 and i only have a schedule with one guy how could i get more peaple to trust me
Age can sometimes be an obstacle for people, particularly because a lot of people want someone to walk their dog in the middle of the day (right when school is). BUT if you show people how dedicated you are and how much you care for the dogs then people are much more likely to trust and recommend you! Word of mouth is HUGE way of getting clients, so let your current client know that you're looking to add dogs to your pack and ask them to recommend you to people that they know. Also I find that posting photos on social media gives a place for people to see how much fun the dogs are having with you throughout the day, and people put a lot of trust in that. Good luck!
That's so great that you're doing this while young! Have your parents sign you up for a Holly and Hugo certification course. It will help customers trust you. They're on sell with Groupon 😁
Hi! As soon as I started watching I immediately knew I would subscribe to this channel. Ok so here is the thing, im under 15 but older than 10, is it a good idea to start dog walking?
DEFINITELY! Just be aware of the size of the dogs (as in, don't take on a giant dog that likes to pull if you're unable to keep a hold of them. You want to take care of your body too!). Also, there are a lot of people that want their dogs walked right in the middle of the day while they're at work, which is likely when you will be in school. So be aware that you may not get some clients based solely on that fact, but there will be other people that will be very happy to have you walk their dog after school or on weekends.
But it's not all butterflies and rainbows. Be sure that you have mastered basic commands (sit, heel, come, whoa, etc.) and that you can be assertive and patient in all situations. You should have knowledge of typical breed characteristics so you won't be unpleasantly surprised. Basic animal first aid should be in your list of skills. Shadow someone already in the business to see the reality of it. You will also need to be bonded, since you're going into people's homes, and probably have a police check as well. Dog walking is fun, but it is definitely work!
Good luck!! 🍀 It is the best! (Obviously with everything, it has it’s negatives) Getting to spend my time and working day with animals is an absolute dream - I feel super lucky I must admit! Word of warning though.... it does take a while to build up a client base but don’t let that discourage you! Hope it goes well! 😁
When I walk my dog I always see people wanting to pet me dog... and it take 30 minutes for them to finish... I am just sick and tired of this and the worst thing is that when people pet my dog with their dirty hands and then I have to bathe the dog..
Two Things I Hate When Walking My Dog: 1. I really hate it when I'm walking my dog and a little kid starts barking at him. I literally just want to fling the little kid. 2. There's this dog that's the same breed as my dog and many people call him the other dog's name. They don't look nothing alike and I feel like people are just playing with us.
Yea I was walking a staffy called sandy she’s adorable and loved to run so we ran and I had to jump over her bc she was so fast and nearly ran on the road but yea she’s fine
Hi Monica! I'm so happy that it helped you! It may seem overwhelming and scary to start a dog walking business, but once you start, it runs smoother than you expect. Go for it!
@@InRuffCompany Hi this may seem a daft question but how do you stay on ya feet walking a group of dogs when it's icey under foot, not sure I could stay on my feet
@@mandyobrien1871 very good question lol its HARD! I only get boots with really good traction, I avoid the ice at all costs, and I have a stash of treats in my pocket so that if the dogs start to pull too much I can distract them
Good question! When I first started I was walking for a dog walking company. They gave me 3 weeks of training, and then offered continued learning classes. Knowing the stress signs in dogs is super important when dog walking, so study up on that. Really there is no professional training when it comes to dog walking, but taking classes and going to lectures is great for your own knowledge and it also makes you more credible to clients. I also suggest starting off small so that you can learn the ropes (start walking with only one dog at a time before you add more to the group)
How do you catch a dog that broke the leash and run away? Throwing food at him is an obvious one, but he may be too excited at that point to care about dogs. And they do know you're doing this to catch them.
If this happens, first thing to remember is to NEVER chase it. The dog will just think that you're playing and run away from you. Try running in the opposite direction so that the dog follows you. That's when you can grab it's collar. A dog is also more likely to come towards you if you are close to the ground (crouched or sitting). Throwing treats can work if the treats are high enough value (often times I will keep irresistible treats like hotdogs in my bag and reserve them just for this situation). If the treat is not high enough value the dog may ignore it, yes. If you're throwing the treats, crouch down, and each time that you throw the treat throw it closer and closer to you. Then when the dog is close you can slowly put your hand under it's collar. Don't reach out too quickly, because the dog may then bolt. When you actually catch it you'll need to find a way to get it back onto a leash. If the leash is completely broken you can tie it around the dogs neck as a slip lead. I also suggest always carrying an extra leash on you (in your pack or wrap it around you). Keeping an extra leash has saved my butt multiple times. Hope this helps!
Thank you. Yes, that will help. I will soon start walking dogs for extra money. Before starting, I want to know in advance what to do in such critical events. If the dog gets lost because I did not know what to do, then I will feel so bad when calling the owner. And with today's social media, my name will be ruined quickly.
It depends on how long the walk is, and if it's a private or group walk. For a 1-hour group walk in the off-leash park (which is the standard), payment is $20 per dog, with the opportunity for me to bring up to 6 dogs on the walk. That's in CAD, not USD
All our true 🐶🐶I am a dog walker 🐶🐶I get hit on by guys when walking dogs I am thinking there serious about wanting my services and then they ask can you walk me wtf I do not need that I know it a joke by come on
I don't think that there is a specific age minimum for dog walking, but there may be in you're looking to get insurance (the age for that would be 18). People may take you more seriously if you are high school age and over, but you can for sure begin to walk dogs when you are younger, as long as you're able to physically walk them!
YESSSS! I completely agree with all of your additions. Especially the chasing the dog around the house part. I've been there!
I agree! But have you actually had a dog dislocate your shoulder from pulling? I don't doubt that it's possible, I'm just curious if that was a figure of speech or actual personal experience.
Caitlin Swartz figure of speech, but I do actually know someone who broke her hand from holding all of the leashes!

You forgot people who don't leash their dogs in non off-leash areas. And walkers who don't use clips or karabeaners.
Why use a clip if you don't need to? Walking for a few years now and never let one lose yet 🤞🏻
I walk multiple dogs at one time and I love it when people pet my dogs

I’m going to start a dog walking and dog sitting business, because I love animals.

I walk dogs too and I'd have to add retractable leashes on large dogs...
How do you find it? Genuinely curious! I find it to be a nightmare but interested to hear your opinion
Or when it’s a new dog and the owner doesn’t tell you the dog is aggressive

My biggest pet peeve is when people hire strangers to take care of their dog when their dog is highly aggressive towards people & other animals
alexa johnson some dog walkers specialize in dogs with special needs like aggression. I've seen wonders achieved.
aaaah the humans who bark at you.... thank you...
Are you Ellen Miles? Ellen Miles is the author of the book series Puppy Place, and she also has a dog called Django.
Please don’t think this is funny.
Oops I replayed myself
I meant reply
The first thing I have an explanation for... People wanna get dogs attention to disrupt u
As a dog and white couch owner... I also don't get it lol

I tell my dogs to snarl at them
I didn’t know people bark at you, what is wrong with humans lol?

They are barking at you because they think it’s better than whistling at you. It’s stupid attention seeking behavior.
they bark at you bc you're HOT ;)
I watched this for 6 minutes and u said nothing that makes sense smh
