    Once again you cut through the mess and end up with great advice via paint colors. It is easy to think we can become accoplished painters if only we had a certain special color. Bur once again you prove it is not necessary to buy tons of different paint colors. Leach yourself to mix your own and you not only end up with beautiful paintings you save money. Good job rachel

      I think learning good composition and design are so much more important than color. Using good color theory is like icing on the cake, but that doesn't depend on having the magical tube of paint!

    Well I agree… I’m a beginner and I had already decided to ignore warm and cool and go for tone and value and harmony, whether muted, vivid, or a complimentary palette. Use less colours in a painting and mostly transparent pigments… single pigment if possible. But in saying that I’ll watch a tutorial and pine for another colour. I have to spend more time learning how to mix colours… I’ve only been painting 6 months and there is so much to learn but I am mostly enjoying the journey. I’m in a happy place when I paint. (Most of the time ) Thank you for sharing your palette with us. I love your paintings. ✨🎨🌈

    Wow that’s very interesting. I have been noticing that I have been relying on most of these same colors for my animals paintings of dogs, cats, birds, & cattle. I have yet to get a tube of your black paint color after watching your Chick painting video. It great to see another artist who mixes paint from different brands like me.

      The Lamp Black is a good one to have if you have a long haired black cat like I do - I have yet to do a painting of her yet that really takes advantage of what Lamp Black can do. But yes, my palette colors are good if you're an animal painter, but I think they'd be good for landscapes too!

    I use a split primary AND my specialty paint palette (has convenience mixes and different... specialty type paints). I feel like there is a time and place for everything. I think it depends on the techniques you use, what you paint and what you learned. I learned from old school artists when it comes to watercolor and acrylics. I started out with a split primary, so I'm comfortable with it. I guess it just depends. Haha. I wouldn't say you shouldn't do something, I just say do what works for you 🤷‍♀️

    • @rachelsstudiodotcom

    Whoa! I am going down that handprint rabbit hole of dump the idea of warm and cool. REALLY? How many years of this concept being drilled into me?? Now it is second nature and of course if I see something ugly in my mix I realize and know why, but it was great to have you suggest two colours that I love, the napthol red ( yay thanks Steve Mitchell for that tip years ago) and the aureolin yellow ( the non fugitive one ) as great mixers for both directions. I reach for these two all the time and am never disappointed. Totally in your WN camp for the French UB, violet and Burnt sienna. Can’t live without them! Great video and I love how you showed how you use YOUR chosen palette in your paintings and suggest other uses. Now what am I going to tell my students next week after just teaching them the warm and cool primaries?? Oh boy.. 😂😂. Answer? It’s alllll good. It’s paint! What’s not to like?

    • @rachelsstudiodotcom
      @rachelsstudiodotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, yes, I think the book 'Make Colors Sing' made this idea famous, and if it works for you great! It's just touch for my simple brain to keep straight.

    I really appreciate this as a pretty new watercolor artist. There's so many colors and I have no idea what to get. I also find the warm and cool yellows and reds annoying. I'd just like some true primary colors.

    • @rachelsstudiodotcom
      @rachelsstudiodotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It took me forever to find the perfect yellow, but I love how this one mixes so well with the rest of my colors! And having to keep track of what is warm and cool is just needlessly complicated imo!

    Mijello Mission Gold makes a single pigment green gold. They call it olive green but trust me, it's a green gold. I compared it to my QOR green gold (which is really a green gold deep) and I way prefer the Mission Gold. Just an FYI.

    • @LindsayKitson
      @LindsayKitson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Windsor and newton green gold is a single pigment paint too; I'm not sure what she's using "convenience colour" to mean. Daniel smith does have a green gold that's a mix, but they came out with a single pigment PY129 called rich green gold. I love PY129 though, I use it a lot for mixing greens and painting reflections on gold or brass.

    Are you using real Aureolin? I cannot use it for my portraits. Aureolin (cobalt yellow) PY40, is not lightfast. It fades to a dirty greyed brown after only a few months of light exposure. I prefer the Munsell color system that has 5 primary colors. Red, yellow, green, blue, purple/violet. But I use a "purple magenta" in place of purple. To me the Napthol Red (I have that one) and Ultramarine make the ugliest purples. Its why I need a magenta, PR122. I studied handprint for years and talked with Bruce the creator. Its such a great website full of info!

    • @rachelsstudiodotcom
      @rachelsstudiodotcom  ปีที่แล้ว

      No Holbein Aureolin specifically doesn't fade but other Aureolins do PY154-Benzimidazolone Yellow, PY175-Benzimidazolone Yellow and PY150-Nickel Azo Yellow are the pigments in Holbein Aureolin, and most yellows named Aureolin on the market have historically had PY40 as the main pigment which does seem to fade

    You have a way of explaining so clearly. We all need to paint more, not buy more of anything!
    You may have done this and I missed it, but could you please address your thoughts on the CMYK that is oft cited as a substitute for RYB? I first read about it in a 2012 art book, but it was not widely discussed until recently. In fact, it was facetiously described as "color heresy" in the book. The author was John Muir Laws, and it is a book on painting birds. Oddly enough, when trying the combos they seemed to work well, but we are just all so used to the blue/red/yellow scheme.
    Would also appreciate a video (a link to already existing) suggestions you have pertaining to travel palette colors for six or twelve choices. I, too, was rethinking that the six had to be warm and cool versions of the classic primaries, and want to use convenience mix green and an earth color. But with all of my pursuits, I overthink it.
    I just came back from a cruise (first since March 2020, where we were stuck on a ship that couldn't port most places - long story) and appreciate the art you and other talented fine artists produce after seeing the "art" auctions by Park West on board.

    • @rachelsstudiodotcom
      @rachelsstudiodotcom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much Joy! I've done a little research into cmyk vs rgb, but my conclusions were that the whole discussion is more important when you're printing art, not choosing paint colors. After painting 20 years I know what I like, and that's all I need, with rare exceptions. I don't travel and paint, but if I did I would take these 10 colors with me!
