Born in Iowa, raised in California, lived in Maryland/Virginia/Maryland/Texas.. I’ve enjoyed the food and culture everywhere I go in the country..I’ve realized/accepted that the USA is freakin huge!! Learned to just enjoy everything!!
That vent on the side of Bridgestone Arena is so cold because there is a hockey rink inside. If the ice was in place, the inside of the arena would have been about 60 degrees. That vent is helping circulate fresh air with a by product of air conditioning the street below it haha
The heat due to the humidity is hard to deal with when you aren't use to it, you learn to go out super early of after 6:00 p.m.. Looks like you saw a lot anyway, and had a decent meal, lol. Thanks for taking us along.
Shaun, these days most locals avoid downtown unless they work there or have family and friends from out of town. I moved out 15 years ago, just south of Franklin, TN Nashville is my hometown, it’s over crowded now, and is the most expensive place in Tennessee to live these days. I still go to concerts, and hockey games there. I do hope you and your wife enjoyed your stay here. There’s a lot of history here in Tennessee.
My friends and I used to hangout on 2nd Ave in Nashville almost every weekend in the late 90's and except when I have to go downtown for something specific, I avoid it like the plague lol.
Most meat and threes I've been to are not cafeteria style, but writing the choices on a blackboard and the food options are all very familiar to me. There is a running joke that most southerners favorite veggie is Mac & Cheese because of places like this. Glad you are enjoying it!
So you like the pecan pie, eh Shaun? We can get you a recipe. That gooey part of the pie is a brown sugar custard. It sets up because it’s made with eggs. Some recipes put in a bit bourbon too. As the pie bakes, the pecans rise to the top, depending on how many cups you put in. You can throw in some chocolate chips too. It’s one of my favorite pies. I hope you got more sunscreen too. You were looking pretty pink as the day went on.
Appalachian meals always have 3 sides with the main. For any company cooking or Sunday meal my mother followed that formula. Meat(s), starchy veg, green beans, potato salad or cole slaw, and bread. Then dessert.
I lived in Nashville many years. I loved to have meat and three for lunch. I have lived in Tennessee all my life. Also the pedestrian bridge is the former Shelby street bridge that I have driven over many times.
Born about 20 miles SE from where you're standing, welcome to the Mid-South, Southern Kentucky is very much like Tennessee. About 3/4 -1 hour north on I-65 is the National Corvette Museum and Assembly Plant in Bowling Green. The Man in Black was the Man.

I’ve lived in Nashville almost my entire life (46 years old), it has changed SO much in the last 5-10 years. Broadway was always busy but the pedal taverns and tourist tractors, etc. are a newer thing (and honestly a nuisance). We have become known as a place to have bachelor and bachelorette parties, which is sad. There is a lot of history and wonderful things here but the city is not the same as it was. Also, Cash’s house burnt down but you can still visit the site. Come back to Nashville in Spring or Fall, the weather is much nicer. Unfortunately Arnold’s has closed, it was a Nashville institution.
Love that you had food envy. The roast beef did look good though. Did you manage to avoid getting messy, didn't look like it when you dived in on the ribs with your hands. Mrs H 💕
The Station Inn in Nashville is about one of the only old school music venues that has not been turned into a tourist spot. That was the only time in Nashville I felt like I got a feel for what it was like several decades ago.
A meat and three is also called a “plate lunch.” I grew up 30 minutes outside of Nashville and I’ve never said meat and three. My grandmother would frequently send me to various restaurants to pick up a plate lunch for her and I.
Brothers Burgers! A friend and I worked in NVille for several months back in the 2020 days and this place was new but absolutely rocked. Our several month burger tour named this by far the best in town. Those fries too!!
I'm Southern, originally from Tennessee and have never heard it called a meat and three, lol. I guess it just depends on where in TN you're from. I'll take the pecan pie, but you can keep that meringue. Iremember childhoods of "dinner on the grounds" at church with all the meringue and having to wade through 3 inches of meringue to get to an inch of lemon or chocolate...no thank you, lol. And tea so sweet and dark that when you drop a slice of lemon in it you can hear the lemon whimper because nothin' that sour should have to die that sweet a death :D
I'm a Nashville native and I believe the "meat and three" term is a very local phrase. BTW, I would never get a bbq dish at a meat and three. It likely will not be proper bbq (not smoked meat).
@@eddieevans6692 Like I said, I guess it depends on what part you're from. I'm from West TN, north of Memphis. Specifically Henry County. I'm 54 and the term is new to me.
Meat and 3 is the common term in Alabama. It may explain why meat and 3 s are rare in Nashville and more common in Birmingham. Nikki’s West, Ted’s, Johnny’s, Whistle Stop, Fife… are in Birmingham and are all much better than Arnold’s.
All of us from the south did warn you not to come here in the summer, it is even worse further south, here is Louisiana we go to Tennessee to cool off in the summer.
You are now an official American wearing that Bass Pro Shop cap and enjoying Johnny Cash... I felt bad for you Shaun... Could see the sunburn getting redder and redder as the video went on... Hope that didn't start stinging... Peace...
Shaun you are so right this isn't Johnny Cash's Nashville anymore. Its not country music anymore as they all sound alike. Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, Waylon Jennings, Alan Jackson, Clint Black...the first notes you knew who they were. Come in the spring or fall to most of the South but just glad you came at all! God bless you & Teka. May I ask... how is early to mid Sept in Edinburgh? We've always come in the spring & don't want to come in the summer. Just day trips out of Edinburgh our base. Thx Shaun!
Nice, love it! The meat plus three looked good, I would definitely get roast beef instead of ribs. Never cared for ribs or wings. 🙂 I'm more a rock n roll guy, but Johnny Cash is one of the country singers that I love! I would be interested in checking out the museum 🙂
Arnold's is such a great place to get a bite to eat. The desserts are my favorite items to get. Peach cobbler or their chocolate and black pepper pie is definitely worth trying out.
Sad Arnold's is closed due to high rent in the area, glad you got to eat there! As a Nashville native, I hate that city has become a magnet for bachelorette party's and such. I avoid downtown myself sadly, it's just too much a party atmosphere. Used to love going downtown to listen to all the live music, but it's just too wild for me these days. My husband is an Uber driver, and driving downtown is a nightmare with all the party buses and pedal wagons. Hope you enjoyed your stay and that you can come back, but may I suggest late April or October to avoid the heat and humidity lol.
Native Nashvillian of 76 as were my parents & grandparents on one side & I totally agree with you! I don't even recognize my own city anymore. Our son-in-law is an Uber driver & the weekend of CMA & Smyrna Air Show he stayed in M'boro. He spends most weekends in M'boro driving but will take someone to the airport. He doesn't mind downtown being a native New Yorker but summer & holiday weekends it has become a nightmare. He does great with college students at MTSU. Ha!
Teka, cauliflower r8ce is everywhere here, mostly supermarkets. It's become a thing for people who are.trying to eat low carb or "no carb" (keto or carnivore). I'm over it, have had too much cauliflower everything. Recipes easily available online. They must have seasoned it well. There is, however, a frozen pizza called Caulipower that has a crust from cauliflower and potato starch. It's actually pretty good-thin crust that gets crispy
I thought she was talking about a real rice casserole? With cheese and cauliflower? We had one we ate growing up with rice and cheese and broccoli. I assumed it was that type of thing
I thought it was the cauliflower and rice cheese casserole too. Maybe it's the bits of cauliflower and cheese. Hard to tell. I was hollering at the screen, "Someone give that poor girl a recipe!" It ain't that hard and surely you can get it over there.
Theres not many stores to buy water downtown but almost any bar or restaurant will give you a to go cup of ice water. Remember we do free refills and water is almost always free.
I've never hears it called meat and three, but it looks a lot like what I'd just call country cooking. I can remember as a kid, my grandparents had a farm and the biggest difference between that and what I saw here was quantity just from how many vegetables there were.
To answer your comment about the original great country artists and if current Nashville is anything like it. You hit it on the head with NO! Nashville back when the Ryman auditorium started was truly quaint streets with homes and families all up and down them. The history of the Ryman auditorium is fascinating and really gives a peek into country music history. Johnny and June Carter Cash are Icons of American Country Music there will never be another artist with their talents!!
Europeans have NO IDEA what American food culture is like. One of the advantages of having SO MANY different cultures in our country. The food here is UN-MATCHED.
St Louis Missouri girl. Never heard of meat and three. I see greens there. I love them!!! Especially the juice (pot likker). PS- I just looked up Arnold's menu and it said restaurant is permanently closed 😢
They're probably gonna build another skyscraper there. Currently there are 45 new buildings in the works with the tallest at 60 stories. The growth is kind of crazy. I was born there and grew up there but now live in Vermont. When I return it feels unrecognizable in some areas. I do love to go back though. The Parthenon at Centennial Park is a favorite place, as well as, the state capitol grounds and the Bicentennial Mall with all its historical timeline and markers. A "meat and three" is a Nashville classic!
You are correct, Nashville is Music City not just country music. Looks like you are staying in the Gulch, that's going to be pretty expensive, or it was. I haven't lived in Nashville in some time. Broadway is going to be a lot of tourist areas, 2nd Avenue towards the courthouse will be clubs, and Printers Ally will have some older historic clubs. The rain will refill the humidity level back to over 9000. There are a ton of things to see all around Nashville. Most Americans have Irish or Scottish ancestry, so that won't be mentioned much on tours as it's just common shared history, remember the majority of the United States starter populations were people fleeing the English lol
Interesting. Never heard of meat and three, but I have to say it looks like a local variation of traditional old fashioned American food. (meat, potato, veggies)
I’m going to guess that the name is basically a restaurant term to describe their meal format. You get one meat option and then choose 3 sides. Then got shortened to meat and three.
@@bkm2797 We don't call it that in Oklahoma either. We just say good food. I think the 3 is deceptive in that one of them will need to be a roll or biscuit, but it's good, it's all good.
"Meat and Three" restaurants are common in Georgia and the rest of the South, so it's surprising to hear Southerners claim to have never heard the term.
To hot and crowded for me. I love watching you in America. The good and the bad you take it in stide. Im so tired Europeans trashing the USA and calling us stupid. So I thank you Shaun.
See some famous people on the walls behind you, wonder if they ate there. Also, Arnold's is the name of the diner in the old classic Happy Days TV show, wonder if there's a connection there. Food looked fantastic.
The writer of the song Heart was aggravated that Johnny Cash covered his song. It was so personal to his own struggles in life. Once he heard Johnny Cash's cover he changed his mind and said "the song is no longer mine, it's Johnny's."
Unfortunately Arnold’s closed back in January permanently. The property taxes went up and they couldn’t afford to stay there. I heard that they may be trying to open a location in Franklin/Williamson County but do not know when.
Lemon meringue pie is the best in the summer heat....Pecan is good I like it in cold weather…southern food is food the best. Nashville is hot…the south is hot and humid in the summer. 🔥🔥🔥😓
Nashville summers look like a June Saturday night in New Orleans or Santa Fe in the 90s burning Zozobra, or_________? I was young once but I would have been so embarrassed if I was wild like that AND caught on camera and it was the middle of the day. Different times and feeling really old. Arnold’s used to be a daily stop for the older stars. Are they famous for their biscuits? I have never stopped. Would think about it and forget.
Im from Scotland..Lived in the south - Atlanta, Nashville for 10 years...HATED the heat and humidity and the Spring Pollen...dang... Moved up to New England just to get normal seasons... Do miss BBQ tho lol
Even if you don't record, please do yourself the favor of going to Puckett's before you leave. I always get their fruit yogurt with granola. It's completely homemade and taste so good.
Nashville is a lovely city, though traffic is getting worse by the year there. Hopefully, you were able to spend time in Centennial Park & The Parthenon. As for the heat & humidity, yup. Now, hopefully Europeans will know why we Americans are obsessed with a/c. It's hot & humid east of the Mississippi!
The thought of not having AC is foreign to me. In OK it can easily get to 100-115F and some high humidity just to make it deadly. At work or anywhere I never let someone else tell me how hot I am or if I need to cool off. Heat stroke is insidious and you stop sweating and don't feel as hot before you go down.
puh-KAHN pie, if you want to pronounce it proper Southern. Peekin is what the boys do at the girl's dressing room. It is so fun watching y'all enjoying the US!

Hope you had a good time in "Nashvegas" . For a more intimate musical experience try the Bluebird Cafe.
haha i love the name Nash Vegas :D
If you get a chance try a slice of buttermilk pie.
It is a little slice of heaven!
I've never been to Nashville. Closest I've gotten was Memphis as a teenager with my parents and grandparents to visit Graceland.
We have too many people coming here already LOL! Stop letting everyone know how cool this place is!
"Meat and Three" is a term that, as an American of 65 years, I have never even heard of before.
Interesting. Never heard of meat and three, but I have to say it looks like a local variation of traditional old fashioned American food. (meat, potato, veggies)
Yep, I grew up in the South and never heard that term, but it certainly makes sense.
Agreed!
To hot and crowded for me. I love watching you in America. The good and the bad you take it in stide. Im so tired Europeans trashing the USA and calling us stupid. So I thank you Shaun.
I want to go to Third Man! So jealous!
If you eat ribs, ask the wait staff for some wet wipes when you are done.
Lemon meringue is the best pie ever!
See some famous people on the walls behind you, wonder if they ate there. Also, Arnold's is the name of the diner in the old classic Happy Days TV show, wonder if there's a connection there. Food looked fantastic.
It was really super
The writer of the song Heart was aggravated that Johnny Cash covered his song. It was so personal to his own struggles in life.
Once he heard Johnny Cash's cover he changed his mind and said "the song is no longer mine, it's Johnny's."
it is such a beautiful powerful song
Unfortunately Arnold’s closed back in January permanently. The property taxes went up and they couldn’t afford to stay there. I heard that they may be trying to open a location in Franklin/Williamson County but do not know when.
That ain't hot. Arizona in the summer, now that is hot :)
😂😂 But it's a dry heat! 🥵
Lemon meringue pie is the best in the summer heat....Pecan is good I like it in cold weather…southern food is food the best. Nashville is hot…the south is hot and humid in the summer. 🔥🔥🔥😓
I hope your green beans were made with bacon and onions, salt & pepper! They are best that way!
Try adding a chicken bouillon cube also, I think you'll like the result.
Bass Pro hat - nice! How'd ya like Bass Pro? It's one of my favorite stores.
Nashville and Atlanta aren’t even the worst. But I guess if you’re from Scotland it’s pretty rough.
Even if you don't record, please do yourself the favor of going to Puckett's before you leave. I always get their fruit yogurt with granola. It's completely homemade and taste so good.
YOU DIDN'T TELL HIM ABOUT PUCKETT'S BBQ? He's going to have to make a trip back here just to try it. AMAZING!
@@therealcrikey no. I myself have never had their bbq. I'm a vegetarian so I stick with the yogurt or eggs and hashbrowns
Need to go to Arnold's! PeeCahn pie because you pee in a can! How fun thank you for sharing!
I have never heard of meat and three.
You can make these things at home, never heard it call meat and three, I'm from the south. meat and sides.
Oh yeah we went to the park (previous video). Loved spending time there
Shaun you should try Sun Drop it's a southern soda
Well, if you were going to have a meat & 3 Arnold's is a good choice for Nashville. Well known and with good food!
Merengue is a dance.
Meringue (mr·ang) is a dessert. Its tricky.
And a pee-can is what your Grandma kept under her bed according to Paula Deen LOL
OMG yes, you are in deep water now with the whole fork and knife thing. God gave you fingers to pick that rib up with! Also, the correct pronunciation of the nut is Pa-con, not Pee-can. It's Pa-con. There you go. You're a Southerner now.
I’m from Tennessee and have always known it to be meat and 3
Thanks for doing nashville guys. I’ve been watching you ever since you started doing outlander clogs
Never been to Nashville and never plan on going. Too crowded, too noisy! I'd rather be out in nature enjoying the peace and quiet.
