Special memories here for me here. Growing up in St. Helens, these men shaped my childhood: Mal Meninga, Phil Viewers, Andy Platt, and none more so than Neil Holding. I remember being there watching this match. Holding in particular was an idol of mine, and Meninga's single season had such an influence. What an era!
80s league was the golden era for me,Ray French commentating, absolutely brilliant!!Big Mal made such a difference for saints this season scoring numerous tries and putting the fear of God in opposing centres ,and all for £1500 a match!!compare that to what some of them are on today ,absolute bargain.
those in the know down at the Canberra Institute of Sport rated Mal as a potential Olympic decathlete, looking at him at 5:50 stretch out , you can see why.
What an amazing display of rugby. I remember this Saints side and they were Brilliant. Packed out crowds and amazing atmosphere. Stan Wall the Ref: came to Leigh as assistant coach to Dave Chisnall and Alex Murphy were i played. with Des Drummond, Derek Pyke, Jonny Westhead (rip) Phil Fox, Ray Tabern, Phil Johnson and may more great players
11 local lads and two aussies, one of which was a superstar, if only they could bring this team back! re, the Inglis comparison; Meninga was in a different league!
TheSamantha70 ...yep, I’m a massive Inglis fan, he’s amazing, but Mal Meninga was unstoppable and a natural leader. He’s the best leader and all round player I’ve ever seen.

Me dad took me to every game that year, home and away ! I was only 11 and 'Big Mal' (smell me finger) was my idol - good memories.
Stan Wall was a ref? LEGEND!
i WAS ONLY 8 AND WAS AT THE GAME, THE ONLY THING I REMEMBER OF THE DAY WAS THE DRIVE HOME AND SEEING BRADFORD CITY STADIUM BURN DOWN.
sadly injury prevented Mal coming back to Saints but what a display he put on in his final match .

Ray French and Alex Murphy calling the action!!!!!
Wha a fantastic game
Saints win and a bevy of four 80's fashioned blonde sorts on the podium. RL has everything.
It's a shame we don't get to see players of Meninga's quality in England any more.
"I don't think there was anything wrong with that tackle....he only hit him with his shoulder"
was the day of bradford city fire this game ..
Man against boys when Meninga was playing !
Except he didn't like to tackle often, saved up his energy for attack.
One of the dislikes was Mike Smith.

What a player big mal was
YES
Fan passion back then,in comparison now fans look numbed.A dip into the the video archive of the mullet, non pc days
meninga looks like greg inglis
Other way around
ha ha 7:52 Mal knocks that no.15 back to the goal line.
Pinner try you could have put a bus tho the gap.
No bloody legal obstruction.... i mean ‘set plays’ just proper ball craft...it just was better...
That saints player should have walked for that second half
high shot and punch
Hull kr should of won this…never mind tho at least we was the champions 😊
Not really as Rovers were soundly beaten in this final but were worthy Champions that season.
