OMG....Thank-you so much to see this clip of the original Geoffrey Holder, costumes and choreo and direction.... this is the wiz before the movie ruined it.... its been over 40 years and i can still see Glinda glide out on a giant slice of watermelon....I was done
Absolutely Magical and beautiful. Truly remarkable, I dont understand the critiques of this show, I feel it captures the original rather well. Im very excited to see where they will take The Wiz with this 2023 revival I hear about. And I'm very curious as to where these clips come from.because I've tried to for YEARS find clips of these shows 🌟🌟🌟🌟
There is footage of The Wiz revival 1993 at the Beacon Theater in NYC currently at the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts Theater on Film and Tape Archive!
@@btheatre150th Anniversary? As in from 1983 when this was filmed, or in 1974 when the first time the musical premiered? 2 yrs away is a looong time still, but better than a decade. I’ll subscribe to see either way lol, Thanks for the uploads! 😅❤
No it is not the original production. This is the 1983 touring production that ended on Broadway in 1984. The watermelon costume design was created by Geoffrey Holder.
Wow! Sorry to hear that. When I saw Deborah Cox open the show in Baltimore at the Hippodrome Theater she was very good singing the song. It could be the grueling touring schedule? It’s very hard to sing for 8 shows a week!
Well the costume designer was a black man and trying to reclaim the racist idea that all black folks love watermelon in some way. Im don’t necessarily love it but i see what was trying ti be done.
Life changing ... this is one of the best performances I have seen in my 42 years of life.
Awesome compliment and yes Ann Duquesnay as Glinda was amazing!
That talent is literally startling. Wow
Ann Duquesnay is MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!
She absolutely is! ❤️
I saw her as Glinda in 1984. She brought the house down!
Ann Duquesnay is a beautiful and magnificent Glinda!!! Thank you for sharing this gem and piece of history with us. ❤
Your welcome 🙏 👍🏾
I was wondering if you had the full video of the 1992 production? I am dying to see that one
This is the Glinda I needed 🥰🥰🥰 Miss Ann sung this!!!!
Lord have mercy what a dynamic set of pipes !
Lawd knows I love Deborah, but THIS is what I’m missing. The guts and gravitas. This was amazing.
Shade 😎😎😎 but true

I remember Ann in Bring In The Noise, Bring In The Funk broadway play.
Yes man I wished I saw this performance of the original wiz

NOT THE WATERMELON 🍉 OUTFITS!!!!
That costume looks more like what Evilene should wear
Hopeful thinking: but do you have No Bad News?
Yes but will not post until we get closer to the true 50th anniversary…

I love Lena. And Adore Lena. But why? Was? She? Not? Casted? In? The? Original?
Casted isn’t a word. And who are you talking about?
What’s up with the watermelon? 🤔
Ok why are they surrounded by watermelons? Is this the original design from the original production?
No it is not the original production. This is the 1983 touring production that ended on Broadway in 1984. The watermelon costume design was created by Geoffrey Holder.
Did not like Deborah Cox singing this song tbh… her voice was stuck in Struggle City at the SF stop for the new B’way bound revival…
Wow! Sorry to hear that. When I saw Deborah Cox open the show in Baltimore at the Hippodrome Theater she was very good singing the song. It could be the grueling touring schedule? It’s very hard to sing for 8 shows a week!
She did a wonderful job but…. Why the hell are they wearing watermelon costumes 😂
Parts of Afrofuturism includes reclaiming imagery (and more) that was traditionally used against us. Similar to the reclamation of the n word.
Are they dressed as watermelon
Watermelon? How racist.
It’s not racist Afro futurism which is the style of the wiz reclaims a racist element that was made racist by white people
Well the costume designer was a black man and trying to reclaim the racist idea that all black folks love watermelon in some way. Im don’t necessarily love it but i see what was trying ti be done.
