  • Her destiny made headlines around the globe: 1998 abducted on the way to school, Natascha Kampusch had disappeared without a trace. On August 23rd 2006, eight and a half years after her disappearance, the 18-year old girl succeeded to escape from the prison of her torturer Wolfgang Priklopil. Ten years after of her dramatic escape ORF presents a new documentary, following Natascha Kampusch on her difficult way back into a normal life. 50 minutes consisting of exclusive interviews and touching archive material as well as intimate scenes of her private life allow the viewer to sympathize very closely her attempt to fight against conspiracy and hostility. "During the past decade, I only felt free in a few moments. After I've returned home from captivity, I returned into a life in prison - a prison full of judgments and convictions." ORF's Chrstoph Feurstein has exclusively interviewed Natascha Kampusch, her family and friends., gaining insight into her daily life and accompanying her during her riding lesson, at work at a goldsmith and her return to the place of her captivity - the house of Wolfgang Priklopil - for the first time.

Many people in Europe don't like her because she doesn't cry and show her deep scars. She is very strong. And it's mind boggling how she was able to rise from this hyper difficult situation as a strong women.

her story shows that whatever you do, haters are going to hate. It's the reason why so many women and men who are survivors of abuse/rape don't come forward. Because if you cause a big scene, cry, get angry, etc. people say "he/she is too much. Tone it down! Stop complaining!" But if you don't show your emotions, people don't believe you or think you're messed up... It's an impossible situation to handle, especially when you're in such a vulnerable position, where you couldn't possibly have the energy to defend yourself.

People always want someone to blame, some way to find fault, and someone to ultimately punish. The kidnapper killed himself and thus denied people an opportunity to dole out that desired punishment, and so a certain subset of paranoid, conspiracy-minded people (Like Il Tenore in this thread) will then turn on the victim and try to find ways to blame and punish them. Multiple investigations have tried to find evidence of other culprits/perpetrators/partners/compatriots, and have turned up jack-fucking-squat. Give. It. A. Rest. Grow the hell up, and let Natascha Kampusch live her life in peace.

I remember a group of journalists one time, debating about the possibility of her having been pregnant while she was captured. She didn't initially open up about having been raped (obviously because it's super hard to talk about this), but people always speculated that it must have happened, because what other reason what someone have to keep a young girl in a cell? Police had found a string of hair (that later turned out to belong to Natascha herself), but at the time people thought it could've been from a baby... So they assumed the baby must have died and debated whether she had a part in killing it.... which is sooo immeasurably offensive! (Even if there had been a child and it had died, she couldn't possibly have been held responsible, since she had no control over her own life, let alone that of another human being). What puzzled me most about this group-tear-down was that it was a woman who did all the victim-blaming and a man defending Natascha. I learned there and then that being female doesn't automatically make you an ally and that it doesn't even necessarily mean you understand her circumstances (oppression, physical and sexual violence, starvation, physical weakness and various kinds of abuse etc.). People are either compassionate, or their not, but it doesn't really have that much to do with gender. However, it was still shocking to witness.

He was the only person she communicated with. People criticizing her because she lacked emotion. Her captor made her that way. He would get angry with her if she cried. 5:01 Natascha briefly smiles as her friend recounts the feeling of missing her after she's been taken. i saw that smile, and i saw it quickly dissipate all in the same second because she spent so many years locked away wondering if everyone had forgotten about her. that was a brief moment of recollection that people wouldn't just "forget" about her.

  • @reineshadow

Seeing how people reacted to her being strong despite her experience enrages me. Just because she's not in a puddle of tears, people thought she was lying, and was even part of the scheme. Just because she didn't fit the proper mold society thinks a victim should be in, she was judged and humiliated. They are no different from her kidnapper; only in the guise of freedom.
I am so inspired by this woman. I only saw her story today, and I am amazed at her inner strength even in such a tender age...and now that she's an adult, I still admire her resilience despite everything that is happening around her and the stigma society has placed on her head. Good job, Natascha.

People who judge her right now for being so strong and "that she doesn't seem like a victim" are those who would rather see her dead than to see a surviver..shes not a victim.. She's a surviver and this is the whole point. If she wasn't so strong and if she didn't have this ability to be so thoughtful, brave and really really strong she wouldn't have survived all of this!
This strength that some people hate is exactly the strength that made her survive this!!

how people think she was some how involved in her own assault and kidnapping when she was literally TEN when he took her is beyond me. it’s crazy how when people are falling apart others pray for them to be strong and get better, but when they see someone being strong they criticize you for now showing your emotion…he would ridicule, beat, and STARVE her if she cried or was in a bad mood or didn’t just in general do exactly what he said, so she learned to turn her emotions off. and she doesn’t need to breakdown in front of a camera (not that there’s anything wrong with that) to prove what happened to her.

The public mistreated this woman big time. There was a lot of victim shaming going on and also the people were harsh on her, when she started to put on some weight after her escape. She wasnt the beauty rescued from the beast anymore and people & the media hated that.
I mean, she did, but how was she supposed to learn a healthy way of dealing with food when she was in constant fear of hunger from 10 to 18 years old? The same for emotional coüing? How was she supposed to learn a healthy way of handling her emotions when she was locked up in a basement for 10 years and got beat up by a psycho?
But thats how the public reacted in the early 2000s. I was a bit too young to understand all of this.

What a sad story and not just talking about her years in captivity. I am amazed she wanted to stay in Austria after the way they treated her but that just adds to her bravery. These disgusting people all the way up to government. Shameful the way they treated her and the guy who stole her story was yet another exploitation. Brave smart woman. Shame on the rest of them and I hope they carry that guilt of how they treated her. I know she also dealt with alot on social media. What is wrong with these people, held captive for all those years and then treated like dirt. What a strong courageous woman she is.

She was kidnapped for 8 years from a young age. Its not like she had a sheltered childhood then suddenly went through some traumatic event and is being interviewed the next day. What happened to her became her life for eight years. It would've become rather normal for her. Why should she be a mess. I'm not downplaying what she went through. It must've been hell for her but all the people thinking she should be in tears don't seem to realize that she's had eight years under him where it probably started to feel normal. Probably even developed some complex bond with her captor and maybe even cared for him somewhat so her memories of those eight years wouldn't all be hell. If she didn't snap and kill herself during those eight years she sure as hell isn't going to be a blubbering mess ten years on. During those ten years her kidnapping is probably all anyone thought about when people met her. She would've told this story a lot over the years to a lot of curious people. She's not going to break down in tears every time she tells it.

dear Natasha , ( this is a free translation of the comment below ) so that more people can read it)
you are a truly wonderful human being, so intelligent, pure and sensitive. I love your command of language - nuanced expression. ( i am german but live in an english speaking country and your German is a joy).
It is shocking to learn how 'spiritually poor' so called 'normal people' are in a society like Austria - that they chose to fall for all these crazy theories and judge you the very person that has been the victim. It is evident, it's a media ploy to draw as much money as possible out of your ' story' . However, you are working your way out of victimhood and you have done so ever since you were a child & teenager. i wish you the very best for your future - may life become easier for you , may you be surrounded by loving people - ❤️ by the way, your first book is extraordinarily well written and I will read your latest book as well - best wishes S

Paedophiles can easily groom a small child via the internet, before even meeting them, in Natascha's case she was abducted and held captive in a concrete cell in his basement, from the onset it was his mission to have full and complete control of her, and he had 8 years to achieve this. I think it is utterly shocking that people are in any way blaming her, or her family, and her treatment has put me off Austrian people, starting when she first escaped and asked the first people she met for help, and they just ignored her, even the neighbour who did call the police, she just ignored her until the police came, then the press and government set about blaming the victim, utterly shocking.

I‘m so sad that she didn’t get any support after her awful experiences! 😔❤️
Instead, she inherited some ghost house that she cannot use because of some stupid neighbours!
They should be ashamed, because they didn’t help her in the time and also after it. To give the house to some refugee families would make this place a better place again.
She seems very lonely, only her family. And it’s ridiculous that people make up their own stories and treated her so bad. Why do they think she would keep silent if there were other criminals? Natascha is such a good-hearted and strong person, she even thinks of the feelings of her family or of the mother of Prikopil.
She wouldn’t be silent if there would be other criminals.
I hope so much, that she has got enough good people and friends around her! That people give strength to her and help and support her!
I know, she is always so self-controlled, because I had also feelings like that. I know, this is not true, it’s if the pain is so strong, you get like a stone.
It’s a reaction of the body, that first you feel like a stone, that you don’t have to feel all the pain.
I had some traumatic experience in my childhood and I was behaving exactly like this. Now, I learned again to cry, to show my real self, my real feelings, to listen to what I need in life to don’t care what other people think of me!
I feel so much respect to Natascha! She should have the opportunity to lead a happy life. To get help for herself!
If I were in her place, I would buy another apartment in another country and I would try to move to another country to lead a normal life over there.
She should start to have a profession on her own, to stay together with friends, to maybe find a good partner supporting her and to lead a good life.
I love her so much! The first interview, the first thing was when she herself was still week, that she wanted to help other children or people in distress. This was so remarkable!
She is very clever! And very social and good-hearted!
I think, what is also good is some sports like Taekwondo! Because these movements are a true liberation.
I wish, that she can find her true love and something interesting in her life and that she can do all the things she missed in these years!
Good luck to you, Natascha! You are a great person!

You need t9 read the book, she wrote it very openly.

Poor darling. I feel so awful for her. She felt it a necessity to buy the house where she was kept. She must be so confused, having that it all happened to her so young. She gained so much weight possibly from the trauma and medications she's on. You can see little ticks in her facial expressions when she talks.
God bless her, may she heal into a perfect soul.

Buying the house is a sign of power, she was held there being told what to do every second of the day but now she can do whatever she wants with it, she can break every rule of his and you’re being very condescending, she’s not confused she knows what happened. Stop being so pitying, shes said she doesn’t want pity, also it’s good that she’s gained weight as she was 2 stone below the start of starvation when she escaped
