Hey, Briggs - there’s one stat you could add to retirement videos that would really be helpful, and that’s average rent for a 1 bedroom apartment. Not everyone is interested in or capable of purchasing a home at any point in their lives, let alone retirement, so it isn’t an option for some of us. Thanks!
A lot of these retirement places want cash. They don't deal in debt. No mortgage. You sell your house, then give them the money for your new house. $400,000 cash. From someone who has to make their money last until they die, and don't know when that will be.
From $37K to $65K that's the minimum range of profit return every month I think it's not a bad one for me, now I have enough to pay bills and take care of my family.
As for Boise, you can live cheaper in Twin Falls, Idaho. Doesn't have as much going on as Boise, but cheaper and a slower lifestyle which some will like.
Two years ago I spoke with a hotel owner in St. Anthony, Idaho, (eastern side) who told me that the population of the town was starting to increase because of people moving out of places like Boise and Spokane, Washington, due to the influx of Californians in those cities.
Briggs, I'm a medically retired Army guy who started the Army waaay late. At the end of the day I'm about an E9 retiree as a 14 year SSG. I genuinely love your sense of humor and all the work you (and/or your team) do to give would-be wanderers the semi-insider info that can really kick off more focused research. Why by state? State lines are such arbitrary boundaries, and the state laws aren't that different (e.g. taxes - if they don't have income tax, they will tax you another way).

I lived in Oxford for three years in the 90s. It was a wonderful place to live, especially if you are late 20s and in school. But not a lot of jobs, and remote work wasn't a thing then. I think about moving back there often, but I probably couldn't live near the Square anymore - the average home value townwide may be low, but thanks to the "football condo" craze, the values near the Square and Ole Miss are much higher. As for racism, college towns are all the same; the most visible racism you'll find now is of the so-called "anti-racism" variety. Even when I lived there I found Oxford to be no more racist than the college town I grew up in in New Hampshire, and it was certainly less racist than Boston.
Liked this a lot, but hope you’ll do a video sometime which includes some info on condos in the locales. Frankly, I don’t want to spend my “golden” years doing outside maintenance.
It feels anything but scenic to see lots of asphalt and impermeable roads. The photos are a good way to identify the communities you mention but scenes of roads and warehouses are anything but attractive.
Pueblo? Really? This past summer I moved from Pueblo to northern Arkansas, and I could not be happier. Pueblo has a very high crime rate, and housing costs are escalating. My first month in my rental home in Pueblo's "North Side," (March 2001) there were two drive-by shootings at the same house across the street - and North Side is supposed to be one of the better areas. The only reason I stayed for more than three years was that I had family nearby in Pueblo West. Pueblo is dirty, dusty, has a big homeless and drug problem, and has had an increasing gang and crime problem. The medical facilities are good, to be sure, but aside from that, it's not a good place for seniors.
The state tax exemption on SSN benefits in Arizona is a STATE TAX issue. It has no affect on the federal tax or "Uncle Same going up your colon." Get it. Got it. Good.

Well I'm a long ways from retiring but honestly I would just rather stay where I'm from. I love it here in Santa Rosa ca. The problem is just like the rest of California the cost of living keeps going up here. Especially with all the people from San Francisco moving up here. Although ideally I would love to go about 25 minutes West to live in the small Beach town of Bodega Bay. That would be awesome! The problem with Bodega Bay is that you're not going to get a whole lot of amenities there and there's not really any corporate places you're used to besides 76 gas station but there are some pretty good local restaurants there and it is a Beach town and it has a wonderful view and it's just so beautiful there. Plus if I want all the amenities it wouldn't be that long of a drive to get back to my hometown of Santa Rosa anyways.
I live in Alaska. At least in an earthquake all your stuff ends up in a pile instead of the next county. We survived just fine with a 7.1 centered about 15 miles from us. We have great medical nearby which is great when you get to be over 70.
Murray, KY is a small town, low housing costs, low taxes, and it's close to one of the best outdoor recreation areas in the country. Healthcare is pretty good.
Kingsport, TN? Mild winters? The tri-Cities area, of which Kingsport is part of, gets a LOT of snow in comparison to Knoxville, which is a little further South. They are liable to get 6+ inches while down in Knoxville, we might get a dusting, maybe. (I realize to a lot of areas that 6 inches ain't much but here is is definitely something.) Only the plateau region (Crossvile etc) seems to get more snow every year.
Pueblo CO has a higher crime rate than retirees would like. There is a tarantula season. Prices have gone up as remote workers are moving to cheaper cities.
Most retirees hopefully have their homes paid off and no major debts. I live in Southern California and it’s not too expensive if you are in that situation. California does not tax social security. Gas is super expensive but I don’t drive too far so I only fill up around once a month. Hope you’re not getting hammered from that storm up in the Pacific Northwest Briggs!!
…glad to see a fella CA retiree. Hello from The Bay Area. Most of my neighbors are retired and they ain’t leaving Atherton, well one did go to Jupiter, FL and my folks moved to a high rise in downtown San Jose.
I attended a funeral in Kingsport, TN a couple of years ago. The coolest part of living there is the tiny airport. You’re a 45 min flight from Atlanta, where you can connect to a direct flight to just about anywhere in the world. I imagine it take some people in the suburbs of Atlanta longer than 45 min to get to their gate in the Atlanta airport!
Thanks Briggs... yeah, I am that age. Spending money like a drunken sailor though... CC bill at $3,000 this month... yikes! But hey can't take it with me. Thanks again
I was just commenting to my bride about how Abilene is never on your lists of places to retire and BOOM! Abilene is #1! You forgot to mention Dyess, and the commissary, where we (military retirees) can clog up the aisles.
That video of Abilene was stark, vacant, flat and uninviting. BTW when you were showing Green Valley Arizona the graphic said Green Springs Arkansas. Morganton looked like it has potential.
Thank you for the video, Briggs! All the best to you and your family! ❤ I don’t think I could ever live in Kingsport/Erwin Tennessee. That place is forever tarnished after they murdered Mary 😢
Some great options depending on the part of the country you want to be in. Homosassa FL, and Green Valley both have their charms. Oxford MS would be interesting. We prefer the gulf coast area of Alabama, but prices are definitely up here.
Sister lives in Rogers, next to Bella Vista. They love it there. I have considered moving there or Kingsport, Tn. Love all of NE Tennessee. Plus, it has one of the best VA Hospitals in the nation in Johnson City. Excellent video Briggs
I live in Kingsport, and it may be cheaper, but the sales tax is 9.75 % . Also, food is taxed. This is the Bible belt ,so there are a lot of churches. Bibles and scripture quotes in your everyday facilities. Please, I'm not saying it's bad for me it was different. This may be different for others.I moved from a city with a lot of bars, restaurants, shopping, and faster pace, but it was expensive. It's cheaper but I find I have become housebound.
Better hope you don't need healthcare access. Tons of nurses and doctors are leaving red states for many obvious reasons. There are healthcare deserts in some areas as they close clinics and hospitals.
Briggs, I would be interested on your take of Kingman, AZ. I am moving out of California... hopefully this year. My wife and I are divorcing, she wants to stay, but I am out. So, I am willing to work with her so she and our kids can stay. Even if we divide our home equally, the resulting funds, combined with the equity we have, would still be insufficient to purchase another property here in California. It is really unrealistic to retire here in CA, you would be throwing good money away by staying.
Briggs, you've been everywhere. Do a video on how all the weather in other places compares to Oregon weather. I mean really compare it from your experience. I can find a lot on the internet but the internet hasn't been there. I hope to retire in a red state that has Oregon's mild weather but with more sun, not necessarily more heat. A tall order, I know, but you're totally the one who can do it.
Hi Briggs, hate to say it but you may need to re-do this video! Boise is hardly a west coast city! and they do not have mild winters!! MS, AK, Pueblo CO is crap. FL makes sense, but you have to deal with hurricanes with high homeowners insurance..AZ well, is running out of water. NC, TN, and TX may really be good choices.
TX doesn’t have income tax, but we sure as heck have major property tax. That stays the same no matter your income, so something to look at if one were considering TX. I have lived here for 22 years, and if it weren’t for grandkids, I would very much consider places like Fair Hope, Gulf Shores Al. Oxford is really nice town, but expensive for Mississippi.
And yet it’s the 3rd most populous state in the country. Must not be all bad ; I think you believe what the news tells you a little too much. 🤦🏼When a storm hits a sector of florida well another 22 million people are doing just fine in the rest of it further inland. Anyhow, enjoy shoveling snow in Minnesota, Illinois or Nebraska… wherever cold state you are in that gets random tornadoes 🌪️ and hail damaged homes and cars. Without enjoying being close to the ocean. 🌊 for the next 6 months.
That Morganton NC area might even be more affordable now after the hurricane devastation in western NC....I enjoy the videos about these smaller towns much more than the ones about the big cities as im never going to live in one in the first place...As for Abilene being #1 on this list...Texas along with Florida are probably the two states i would be least likely to live in plain and simple...Love the state of Idaho, just not the Boise metro area...No fan of any metro area really....Love Colorado, i could see myself living there also...
Wow Briggs, a list without a single place with decent weather. Weather is a BIG factor for me and I simply do not do hot and humid. I hope this video was entirely sarcasm.
Arizona Doesn’t tax Social Security benefits, but you will pay federal taxes on a portion of your benefits, if your total income exceeds certain amounts. Between 50 to 85% of your benefits will be taxed if your income exceeds 25,000 to 44,000 depending on how you file.
Boise - Too cold, too many Californians, state income tax Anything Mississippi - You have to be kidding. There's a reason it's cheap. Anything Arkansas - Ditto Florida - No. I hate hurricanes. One of the reasons I'm leaving Houston. Green Valley, Arizona - Looks boring. Housing looks crummy. I can afford better. Pueblo, Co - Too cold, and I don't, ah, "smoke". Morganton, NC - Too small, move it to Knoxville or Raleigh. Kingsport, TN - So far, the best pick, no income tax on anything, just want something bigger. Abilene - Having lived in Texas for 43 years, I know how boring Abilene is. It can be fatal there. My top four as of now - 1. Knoxville, TN 2. Greenville/Spartanburg SC 3. Huntsville, AL 4. Outer suburbs of Nashville. How about a vid on medium to large city retirement? Or retirement for active singles?
Green Valley AZ is kinda boring at times. But its only a 25 min drive to Tucson AZ. There's plenty to do up here. And Phoenix is only about 2 to 2.5 hrs away if you wanna go to any major event. You only live in Green Valley to get away from the hustle & bustle, but drive into Tucson to do shit. It is getting a bit pricey there though.
Don't know why you down Little Rock. There are a lot of great areas to live in the city. Quite frankly, everyone would not be comfortable living in NW Arkansas

Interesting video. I'm curious why you didn't mention health care for every city. Makes comparison difficult. Greetings from a retiree enjoying central portugal
At 71 years old, retired for 15 years…. I believe best places to retire is small towns that are half hour or so away from a decent medical center.
…or an airport.
My mother had a name for retirement. She said most people call it the golden years, she called it the rusty years.
My aunt Tresa told me one day you will live your golden years, she did not understand inflation, more like copper years, lol.
So true
My knees can attest to that.
SSI should never be taxed
SSI is a non taxable federal benefit. Those benefits don't pay enough to get taxed since it means tested
@@jamesbrown9721wrong.
The maximum at age 70 for SS is 4,873 per month which will definitely get you in a tax bracket which is $25k a year.

A lot of these retirement places want cash. They don't deal in debt. No mortgage. You sell your house, then give them the money for your new house. $400,000 cash. From someone who has to make their money last until they die, and don't know when that will be.

I'm in Humboldt, and love it, I just wish I didn't have a four hour drive to a real medical care.
Statistics usually bore me to tears, but you make them rivetingly interesting. Appreciate your videos.
Yeppurrz. My Dad, who passed in 2015, had retired from Ca to Tucson, then moved to Green Valley, Az.

I live in Alaska. At least in an earthquake all your stuff ends up in a pile instead of the next county. We survived just fine with a 7.1 centered about 15 miles from us. We have great medical nearby which is great when you get to be over 70.
I support all your videos, but Pueblo…gotta draw a line there my friend 😂. Horrible town. Pueblo West maybe, definitely not Pueblo
Murray, KY is a small town, low housing costs, low taxes, and it's close to one of the best outdoor recreation areas in the country. Healthcare is pretty good.
Glad you're recovering!!! 👍
Yeah, as a native New Englander who has lived in the South for 30 years, I am still tickled by the Southern belief that 6 inches is a lot of snow.
You forgot to mention tornadoes and flooding
All of texas is out for me if you own a home property taxes are some of the highest in the country
Pueblo CO has a higher crime rate than retirees would like. There is a tarantula season. Prices have gone up as remote workers are moving to cheaper cities.
How do you figure that in old age someone will enjoy shoveling snow?
Most retirees hopefully have their homes paid off and no major debts. I live in Southern California and it’s not too expensive if you are in that situation. California does not tax social security. Gas is super expensive but I don’t drive too far so I only fill up around once a month. Hope you’re not getting hammered from that storm up in the Pacific Northwest Briggs!!
Also, California doesn't have estate or inheritance tax. I think Oregon might have the worst estate tax in the US.
Morganton has severe risk from flooding. Don't want to spend my retirement years homeless.
I definitely wouldn’t say so. Only a small percentage of land in proximity to the Catawba.
Boise looks like a great place to live, but it's verrry conserrvative.
...and what's wrong with being conservative?
You must be a liberal wack then. Go find yourself a hole to hide in then.
and that is bad how?
@@savannahsmiles1797 I didn't say it was a bad or good thing, just that it's conservative. You can decide for yourself.
Thanks Briggs... yeah, I am that age. Spending money like a drunken sailor though... CC bill at $3,000 this month... yikes!
But hey can't take it with me.
Thanks again
Live it up!
I'm spending it all...whatever I end up with, before I croak.
I was just commenting to my bride about how Abilene is never on your lists of places to retire and BOOM! Abilene is #1! You forgot to mention Dyess, and the commissary, where we (military retirees) can clog up the aisles.
No wonder these towns are affordable, no one on earth wants to live there
Briggs this is ❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
That video of Abilene was stark, vacant, flat and uninviting.
Loved the video! Very vibrant! ;)
Yay, thank you!
Aspen is literally a ski resort. How are you going to compare any other "mountain town" in the Appalachians?
Some great options depending on the part of the country you want to be in. Homosassa FL, and Green Valley both have their charms. Oxford MS would be interesting. We prefer the gulf coast area of Alabama, but prices are definitely up here.
Briggs, ever think about putting in time stamps?
They hurt the stats on list videos.
8:16 - you don’t need a DEhumidifier. You might want a humidifier.
Sister lives in Rogers, next to Bella Vista. They love it there.
I have considered moving there or Kingsport, Tn. Love all of NE Tennessee. Plus, it has one of the best VA Hospitals in the nation in Johnson City.
Excellent video Briggs
Thank you.
East TN natives are starting to hate transplants. The infrastructure is over taxed and the highways are very dangerous
Just work at in a blue State and retire in a red state
There are no blue states, just blue cities
Better hope you don't need healthcare access. Tons of nurses and doctors are leaving red states for many obvious reasons. There are healthcare deserts in some areas as they close clinics and hospitals.
@ricardoconqueso most likely going to get worse before it gets better. I can drive 30 minutes to North Carolina it's a mix state so I'll be fine
The area where I stay at it's growing so I don't have to worry about that another hospital in my county
That's usually the way it goes
Green Springs Arkansas or Green Valley Arizona? I think it’s AZ - and it’s far from good hospitals, the VA, and shopping.
Have you been to Kingman? It’s really crappy! Honestly just a gross town.
What about Prescott?
@@Dreblueskies Prescott is beautiful. But eff'n expensive.
I can tell you that we aint running out of water here in AZ.
Dont know where you got that info. Get off that crack pipe, ese...😆
Florida you get mild weather and loose everything in hurricanes 🌀 or tornado. ...or over billing insurance or property appraiser.
You get to see OhEf Models in SoFla and SoBe these days👀 No to mention Gators and other invasive reptiles in all region of Florida 💯
You get to see Gators, Manatees and Other Reptiles all the time in Florida 👀🤯
And yet it’s the 3rd most populous state in the country. Must not be all bad ;
I think you believe what the news tells you a little too much.
I would like to see the amount of land owned and used by the military by state.
You put Green Grass Arkansas in the middle of your Arizona segment.
A video about the best states/ small cities for newly settled immigrants ( DV Lottery winners), please, Briggs.
I figured you would say lake of the Ozarks because it has so many people moving here.
If anyone needed verification of Briggs' lists. Yep, he is correct about Abilene. Just don't expect a lot of old growth trees or lack of breeze.
GREETINGS FROM THE PPRC GREAT VIDEO TODAY GUESS IT WOULD HAVE TO BE IDAHO.🇺🇸🍺🍺
Wow Briggs, a list without a single place with decent weather. Weather is a BIG factor for me and I simply do not do hot and humid. I hope this video was entirely sarcasm.
Everyone likes different kinds of weather, if economics is an important decision, one has to be flexible re weather.
Arizona Doesn’t tax Social Security benefits, but you will pay federal taxes on a portion of your benefits, if your total income exceeds certain amounts. Between 50 to 85% of your benefits will be taxed if your income exceeds 25,000 to 44,000 depending on how you file.
Boise - Too cold, too many Californians, state income tax
Anything Mississippi - You have to be kidding. There's a reason it's cheap.
Anything Arkansas - Ditto
Florida - No.
@@mjpottertx Franklin Tn is booming.
@ and getting too expensive. Maybe Spring Hill or Murfreesboro.
Nashville sucks now. The suburbs too. Been here for over 20 years. It’s been overrun. Traffic is terrible. Crime too.
@@Leslie-tf2swmost of middle Tennessee sucks now. You throw in tornadoes and humidity and it is becoming less appealing now
Green Valley AZ is kinda boring at times.
Wish you hadn’t mentioned Abilene. I want to escape the ever growing Austin area sprawl and that was on my list. Now everyone will want to go there.
You can have that boring poop hole...
Thank you for the video it's very appropriate for us
Love morganton!
Oh, Briggs, you're so Vibrant!!!
Hot Springs is also next to a National Park.
Arkansas also makes a lot of caskets. Maybe you'll save on shipping.
Don't know why you down Little Rock. There are a lot of great areas to live in the city. Quite frankly, everyone would not be comfortable living in NW Arkansas
While everyone outside of Boise pronounces it "Boy-Zee" the locals 'correctly' pronounce it "Boy-Cee"
We had family friends who moved to Adeline. They called it ABA-Lu-Lu
Energy cost, can make a big difference.
Abilene TX? Are you eff'n kidding me?
You have got to be kidding! 😆😆😆
It would be nice to see a video like this but with places where you don't need to drive.
Check out what humidifiers actually do. You would want one in the desert.
That is true about the Hot springs Arkansas village. But they have a bad HOA
Bogus basin ski area is only about 20 minutes from downtown Boise
Briggs!!!!! Love ur channel...Can u somehow make a video abt livin in Thailand or the Dominican Republic!! for seniors...it would be fantastic..Pls LOOK into it!!!!
now why the hell would you want to sacrifice your safety by moving to places like that?
You left out Golden Valley, AZ. It's about as dirt cheap as you can get.
Where the hell is Golden Valley AZ?
Interesting video. I'm curious why you didn't mention health care for every city. Makes comparison difficult. Greetings from a retiree enjoying central portugal
