When I was a little girl, I loved laundry day with my aunt. She hung all her bed linens on the clothesline and then ironed them using a flat iron and water sprinkled from a purpose-made tumbler with a perforated lid (my job as a preschooler was to hand her the clothespins and do the sprinkling).
Those sheets smelled like summer and felt like Heaven. ☁️

Another tip I love is that most hotels will sell you a new set of the exact bedding they use, up to and including the pillows and mattress! Just ask. I had the best night's sleep of my life on a cruise ship and wouldn't shut up about the bedding, so my husband bought me the whole set for our anniversary.

As a child, I was so particular about my sheets I refused sleep on ones that were too bright, but literally wore out a set of soft blue and white flowers. Today, at 60 years old, I have a set of white ones that go in the wash and right back on the bed every week!

  • @scpatl4now

My advice to anyone who is contemplating designing their first bed is #1 splurge on the sheets. Nice high thread count or Egyptian Cotton is worth it because that's what is going to be touching your skin every night. #2 you get all fancy with a guest bedroom, but I personally don't like a lot of extras on my bed that I have to take off and put somewhere else to go to sleep. It's the last thing I want to do when I am dead tired. #3 if you know how to use a sewing machine you can make a spectacular duvet cover at a fraction of the price. I have been a quilter as a hobby for a while now and if that is something you are into you can make a real statement piece for your bed, but there are so many wonderful fabrics to make a duvet cover out of (just be careful with your measurements). If you are better than a beginner on a sewing machine you can even add a binding around the edge (that navy blue border on the edge of the duvet in the video is called a binding) #4 White isn't always conducive to sleep. My bed that I sleep in is Navy Blue...dark. Having a dark bed is more conducive to sleeping for me, and that's especially true if you are having to sleep when the sun is shining due to hours that you work. #5 You don't have to complete your bed in a day. Add on as you go as your budget allows. Quality pieces as you go will last you a long time over the many times they are laundered. You can always replace less expensive things with more expensive ones as time goes on. That's just my "5 cents" to add on

Hello Lisa I love your energy! When you mentioned the pro tip about sheets, I thought about my mother. She past 19 years ago. She took the time each week to iron her sheets. I have to admit it sounds over the top, but those sheets felt so good. I just might iron my sheets this week, and have breakfast in bed. Keep up the great work! You are the best.

    • @Kathleen5429

Belinda, iron those sheets and think of your Mom. Ironed white percale cotton sheets are still my favorite. When I first got married in 1966, we had to go to a laundry mat and carry a good weeks worth of clothes, sheets, & towels, so I wound up taking just the sheets only, to the Chinese laundry in town. When I would go pick up the clean sheets, they were packaged in brown paper with cotton string (NYC area) and they had such a clean fresh scent to them. Thanks for bringing this memory back to me! Now go iron those sheets! 😄

My grandmother only used flat sheets. Every week, the top sheet became the bottom sheet and a fresh sheet was used for the top. One reason was economy. She used a 2 tub washer and hung her laundry to dry...another way to get a crisp sheet. Her washing station was in a detached garage so, yes, she was saving some work. And, the sheets got pressed. I can still remember sleep overs at her house. The smell and feel of the sheets was amazing.

Sometimes I use a table liner across the end of the bed which pulls in the colors I have chosen for that season. My basic palette are all neutrals and it gives me a pop of color without committing to a color for life.

Perfect timing. After almost 18 months of having my desk shoved in a corner of my bedroom, I've learned I'm going to be able to work from home permanently (very happy). So we're creating a new office and finally doing up the master bedroom (long overdue). I live on the latitude of Anchorage, so I have a winter setup, w double down duvets, cotton flannel duvet slips and fleecy throws (super cosy and snuggly) and a summer set w just the one duvet and linen/cotton sheets. All in the same sandy/cream (dash of soft smoke blue) colour either no pattern or tartan-style checkered to fit the style of the room. Frame and bed tables in fairly Scandi oiled oak.

I got rid of my cherry wood canopy bed and went with a medium orange stain slat sleigh. I regret buying both bed frames because I settled on something in my budget . However I don't regret my creamy ivory linen quilt from Casa Luna light in summer layers nice in winter. I also spent money on a second hand -hand sewn double ring wedding quilt that looks cozy and unique. I now need linen sheets and silk pillowcases 🤩

All your videos are terrific. We have a great double door entry to our bedroom. And when we chose this home for retirement, we knew we wanted one story living. The good news is that should we ever have mobility issues it will be easy to maneuver and see from the bedroom to the open living/kitchen/dining room. The bad news is that as soon as anyone enters the house, the bed is on view. Even though we don't need a comforter in Florida, I chose a big, puffy ruched comforter because it hides a lot of sins when the bed is made. It's a nuisance to remove it every night though. I do have a few beautiful William-Sonoma duvet covers and shams in my linen closet if I ever want to keep up with ironing, though. Maybe I'll try the dry-cleaning route! Great pro tip. Dry cleaners everywhere will be wondering why they are getting calls about their presses!

I got the bed style that allows me to put the head up (or down) as well as the feet. I can also use the "massage" option. As long as sheets are 100% cotton, you can wash them until they get super soft. I buy basic Kirkland’s or Sam’s club sheets and you would never tell. Then I spend the money I saved on nice duvets or throw blankets. I can’t recommend West elm enough for those. Lisa hit it right on the mark with that recommendation! Also, white bedding just makes more sense since it will never fade and you can bleach them as needed. I only buy white towels for that reason too.

I have a one person (me) residential cleaning service and so I've made up many beds over many years. Some of the absurd bed makings I've done are: (1) 365 summer/winter a king size bed with head and baseboard in an itsy bitsy bedroom with 3 heavy goose down comforters, two quilts, a blanket and a 2 ton dry clean only comforter, then lots of different sham pillows occupying half of the bed. (2) The guest bed in the same house, 365 summer/winter missing only the heavy comforter but instead a difficult to manage bedspread. (3) A lady who reprimanded me for tucking in the top sheet at the end of the bed. She thought that everyone wanted their feet sticking out and 2' of top sheet at the top. (4) 6 beds of different sizes, all white so that, after washing, which sheets went to which bed was a monster! She took my advice to buy different colors/patterns in each bedroom to make it easy to sort the sheets where they went. She even bought comforters and curtains to match which made it even easier.

I currently use two flat flannel sheets on my bed, in addition to one blanket, to ward off the winter chill. I have two white matelassé bedspreads on top (one is stored for the summer) and I top it off with three matelassé/quilted shams and two small quilts. Love it! Lovely! Great ideas! I have one challenge though. You make the bed in the morning with all those extra pillows, quilts and what have you. It looks gorgeous and you close the bedroom door and go about your day. In the evening, you come back, it still looks lovely, and you take all the extras away and put them…. On the floor? On a chest of drawers? It is a mess, at least in my room 😳. Unfortunately, I don’t have the space for a chest/bench at the foot end so I need something else. It would be great to get some different nice-looking solutions to this, please.

Tip #4…there are 2 floral patterns in the same size but different, in that lovely room. I thought that was a no no! 🧐
I love both florals but to use them so close together in the same room…🤔 (?).

Zip in / since my hip replacement went so well I decided to move my bedroom to the old side of the house; up to the loft. Looking for lofty ideas for my king size I decided to get rid of the box springs & set bed on the frame that came w/ 3 low drawers per side/ my ruffles fit now covering drwers and storage///plus leaving it lower no longer needing to dismount every morning 🤸🏼‍♂️it was great when my hips were healing)now w/ limited space up in loft low bed looks more spacious in the loft, thank you.
Bedding my theme for hot flashes king size two fitted, then cover with several layers of flat sheets each one tied at the corners. I like using colours like dark brown, tan, yellow, and ivory. The ruffle below is a linen ivory white. So I have several layers for those nights where the first three are gone before midnight 🥵 it’s functional and looks good until the next hot flash/ I moved to force myself, to get used to stairs again and strength training at home/
back to work in one week/ I gotta say I’ve never been happier in my home/ love the changes I made these last 6 months watching you// inspiring me to have a comfy home/ finally my new gas fireplace and stove & fridge it’s been quite a summer to stay home watching, plotting, planning, my cozy surroundings thank you/
Lastly I bought a 22 x 22 leather pillow to cover my physio therapy foam wedge(which was ugly & looked like a old person lived here)matches my Spanish leather pouf 😉 😘🥰

Lisa you're so awesome. Can I give you and your viewers a tip. Please invest in a good moisture resistant with a cotton top mattress cover! Protect that mattress investment. Also, if you've ever slept on 600 to 800 thread count sheets; you'll never go back to anything less. Everything else will feel like burlap.
Will you pay upfront for them? Yes. Will they last longer? Yes. I don't think you'll regret it.

Is there any way I can hire your advice remotely? I would really appreciate your input and I’m happy to pay for it.
I’m making some structural changes to my apartment (after a severe flood) and I have council approval to move a long closet wall, a foot and a half towards the bedroom. The closet would become a small den/office/2nd bedroom for me if I decide to get a roommate. Does it devalue the apartment to make the original single bedroom smaller?
The main bedroom of 11’ by 12’ would become 9’5” by 12’
The other option is to open the closet-bedroom wall for a more accessible closet.

Love big fluffy beds! But if you live in a warmer climate, clean & simple is really much nicer ~ cooler & more practical. Because the throws & extra bedding usually end up on the floor by morning anyway. And too many fussy accent pillows can also be stifling. One colorful one is plenty pretty :)
(Another thought. If you live where seasons change, think carefully about choosing temperature-affected foam mattresses. They tend to be very firm during cool weather & somewhat softer during warm months. And everything in-between. Your body may not adjust to these constant firmness changes very well & sleep will be difficult. They're also very pricey items. You can buy 3 typical box spring mattress sets for the price of most large "Temp-tech" ones.)

Hi Lisa, thanks again for a wonderful video! All these beds are lovely, and your video today is timely, because I have the beds in my master and two more bedrooms of our new house that need toppers. But it seems to me that all beds being showcased these days are, in fact, not made up! As lovely as many of these sheet sets are, I don’t want them to be part of my decor. I also can’t imagine the time spent and aggravation endured from having to tuck in all those flat sheets and blankets every day! And as my husband pointed out, how are the cats supposed to burrow in under the covers for their daily naps? I assume we’re supposed to be chanelling “luxury hotel”, but some of the best I’ve stayed in have formal bedspreads and maids who perform turn-down service. Maybe I’m just old (fashioned), but, to me, a properly dressed bed has a cover that hides the sheets and blanket. A duvet or quilt can be folded at the bottom of the bed, and the pillows, in their cases, would be covered with shams. I also note the absence of bed skirts. How does one hide the box spring - is the topper, whatever it might be, supposed to be wide enough to hide the matress and box spring? How does that work if the topper and sheets are turned back? All the fluffy covers look wonderful - until the down sinks to the bottom, or clings to the baffle stitching, and the whole thing becomes lumpy and messy. I have yet to meet a down duvet at any price that doesn’t suffer from this condition. Better it should be folded up when not in use. Two of my bed frames have side rails and footboards, as well as attractively turned legs, so I know I could just have toppers that extend to cover the box springs, and might do that. But the third bed has a hidden frame, so a bed skirt is a necessity. I like them to be tailored, with box pleats, and accompany a topper, either fitted or quilted, with shams to match/compliment. Duvets (folded at the end of each) will have washable covers to compliment the toppers. The toppers and shams will come off at night, and the duvets go on. The cats will be happy, we’ll be comfortable, and all I have to do is fold the duvets pull everything up in the morning, and replace the toppers and shams….or not….

That's a very good question Allison, I am not sure!! All of these photos I show for inspo are from various magazines + blogs (in the description) so I am not quite sure where it's from!!! If I know where products are from, I will link them in the description box!!! 😇🙌🏼💕💌

Hey, I have a design question. I have an Upholstered high headboard and 9' ceilings. I currently have mirrors behind my nightstands that sit right below my headboard. I was wondering your thoughts on large tall mirrors that are taller than the headboard?

Hi Lisa....again a great video! The biggest problem I have is getting the correct insert for the duvet. Usually the duvet is too large for the insert and then even when inner ties the insert moves all over the place and it never looks "filled up" correctly. Thoughts?

The West Elm duvet covers and inserts are the perfect solution... I can’t recommend them enough! They are larger than most brands too so they will cover the bed properly.

Kim!!! I agree with Brooke, definitely look into West Elm's duvet covers!!! 👍🏼💜💜

Please share ways for keeping the bottom sheet (whether fitted or flat, I’ve tried both) super tight. I like my bottom sheet to stay smooth, crisp and snug all night. It seems all deep pocket sheets, even with a deep mattress, get wiggly. I’ve tried sheets from Frette to Target and many in between…no luck. I’ve bought 4 types of sheet straps, used adhesive carpet corners under the sheet and even bought this ridiculous king-sized rubber band that stretches around the perimeter of the mattress to hold it tight…here’s a news flash…none of this stuff works. I’ve heard about low-profile or shallow-pocket fitted sheets instead of deep pocket but not sure where to start or if it will work. Suggestions please!!!

Red Land Cotton fitted sheets are thick fabric and shallow dimensions. They stay smooth better than any other brand I have, and are grown and fabricated in the US
