    *Rough translations:*
    How did Frederic Come About?
After deciding that they wanted to form a band, the obvious first step was to find members so they went on MySpace because it was where bands liked to put their music on their homepages since there was no CDs at the time. TH-cam was also not mainstream just yet so MySpace was the main space for listening to music where musicians would post their music. Kenji had also put up a recruitment posting on his vocational school advertisement board like a rip-off pamphlet and everything to look for members. There wasn't really a recruitment process, it was just putting up flyers and leaving their contact information at the bottom for people to take back and contact them.
They first wanted a drummer whom they found a profile of on an online forum page. The person was older than them and liked acid jazz. They got curious on what acid jazz was since they've only ever heard of jpop. Even though there were a lot of drummers in Kenji's vocational school he thought that it would be a lot more fun to have someone older than them to learn from in the band, someone who knows about a (music) world they didn't know about at all. Just hearing the word "acid jazz" reminded Koji of the popular dance-able jazz music in the 80s club scene from artists such as Jamiroquai and Incognito, making him very interested in that scene. That's why they reached out to him and decided to meet up at a local studio together, making him, kaz, their third member.
In the local studio, they basically just told him about how their music is like and then went for food together and had a chat. From first impression, Kenji thought he was a really nice person. So the first decided on their first three members. Then, they put up a recruitment post for guitarist on their MySpace homepage and when Kenji checked it, there was an applicant so he told them that they would need to come over for a meeting session. While Kenji was chatting with said applicant, he found out they went to the same school and the name "Akagashira" left a strong impression (it's a pretty rare surname). The interaction with Ryuji was very polite but sending a message (on MySpace) instead of approaching him directly at school since they were schoolmates was scary to Kenji lol.
Kenji and Ryuji weren't even acquaintances at the time so he asked around. He of course had vocalist friends but Kenji also knew a lot of people who played instruments since he was interested in starting a band. When he asked these friends if they knew "Akagashira", his friends went "oh, Aka-chan! That person is a really nice person, he's interesting!" Then when they officially met him in a studio he was really a soft-spoken person. The first impression of him was 'soft-spoken' and a nice person.
Be it kaz., or Ryuji, Koji thought they were really weird people as they had strong personalities. Koji thought it would be difficult for them to match because he and Kenji were twins and would have things that only they understand so they were figuring out a way to go about it since each of them have their own unique personalities but they somehow worked out to have a really good balance with each other.
When they first formed the band, technique and sense was of course needed, but they also though personality was the most important to look at. Kenji felt that in order to last for a long time, it was important for them to be able to share their thoughts with each other to create good things which kaz and Ryuji really fit into (what Kenji envisioned). Koji agreed that it felt natural to have them in the band. After about 3-4 months after the two new members joined, they went to perform lives with 5-6 songs. 26 August 2009 was the date of their first ever live show at a place called "B-Chord"? It's somewhere near Kenji's school. If they were going to be a band, Kenji felt that they couldn't be ordinary so he kept thinking of ways to make their band stand out from others and that's when the idea of using paper storytelling came to mind. That was the period where they decided to do something different from the rest and Koji kept drawing for the paper storytelling. When they had an MC/ment Kenji would be flipping a book which made people wonder what the heck they were doing, doing this kind of thing without knowing what live music was(?) but it was still a good thing that they did that back then.
Since they decided to do things out of the ordinary, they had more and more friends and for the first year they were often invited by others to perform together. They also tried a lot of auditions that Kenji found, aspiring to go professional. Performing at a livehouse is very fun doing what they like but there was a period where they started to question if it was really alright for them to keep doing this. In the end they kept doing music they wanted to do but they thought it was absolutely necessary to get their music recognised by everyone for them to pursue this career and that's why they kept auditioning and eventually ended up in their current company's, MASH A&R audition.
Even during that audition, they were discussing how if they failed this audition, they would decide to disband the band. They thought that it was about time they made a decision, whether or not to continue being in a band (as a job). They had always prepared themselves for that day but there was a sort of passion and resolve that pushed Koji to perform with everything he had during that audition. Things weren't going very well for their band as even though they think their songs were good, it wasn't clear whether or not it was marketable/appealing. Everyone thought about if they would just shut down the band just like that but there wasn't a good timing to cut things off. Kenji thinks that the MASH audition helped them to find the determination to take a step forward (to disband or continue).
The day before the audition, Kenji and Ryuji went out for food together. At the time, since Kenji and Ryuji came from the same school, they wanted to leave behind results from having attended that school and that's where the found the resolve to properly face their music. Ryuji is also the type to enjoy things that are fun but also accept reality. That period was really when they had serious discussions about their career path as a band. It's because of this building of resolve that Kenji is all the more grateful for the Special Award that they were given. Kenji thinks that if he was ever asked what are some things that changed the trajectory of your life, the MASH A&R audition would definitely be one of them. When it was first announced that the Grand Prix would go to THE ORAL CIGARETTES, they thought it was over since they already did their best for that audition. They also wondered why it wasn't them and Kenji added that looking back at the footage, none of them were smiling in it lol. Then the MC said "There's supposed to be only one Grand Prix winner but there one more band that we really want to keep" which was Frederic, giving them the special award which shocked everyone at the venue with how unexpected it was. There were specified special benefits for the winner of the Grand Prix but since their prize was unexpected, they were just affiliated with MASH for the time being. Since then, there were no intentions to give out something like a Special Award again so it really became something special for them. Koji also thought that it was quite fitting for them to receive the Special Award (name-wise). Kenji agrees that it might be weird being happy that it wasn't the Grand Prix but that's how they really felt. Frederic was able to grow into what they are today BECAUSE they received the Special Award.
They were really nervous for the audition since they were betting their lives on it. Many people from across the country gathered in Tokyo's Shibuya WWW so even in the waiting room, the atmosphere was tense. Among everyone, the only band they thought they could get along with was THE ORAL CIGARETTES. They had even talked to them, telling them that they liked their music. Kenji then watched their performance and felt that it was really great too. Kenji was glad that Frederic and Oral were able to get along despite being in an environment where only one group would be chosen.
Making the decision to stick with MASH, Koji wanted to spread their music across the nation and not just where they were so they went on various tours, to the point they were now able to do their own arena performances and the fact that they were able to make such big moves like this was thanks to their label as they never would have been able to do the same on their own, appreciating the opportunity that their label gave them.
In the next episode, they talk about what happened after they joined MASH, made their debut, when kaz. left and Takeru joined.
