The two biggest benefits of the 1996 Cardinals is that the NL Central was a vulnerable division, and that the Astros collapsed in September for the second consecutive season. With that said, the best move they made was the whole remodeling of Busch Stadium. Once they remodeled Busch, the Cardinals didnt need a new stadium, since the stadium looked great already as it was remodeled.
Remember when the Mets used "Baseball as it oughta be" as their slogan in the mid 80s, Cardinals fans were contemptuous of it. But when the Cards themselves adopted it, it was okay. lol
I remember being a kid seeing the team off at the airport. With a 3 1 leas on Atlanta. Honeycut i belive it was said at the airport they were gonna stick the tomahawk were the sun don't shine. That didn't happen. Unforunatly
The Cardinals were one starting pitcher short in 1996. LaRussa's biggest mistake was pitching Todd Stottlemyre on short rest in game 5. That threw off the rotation. Benes, Stottlemyre, and Osborne were the only solid starters in the rotation that year. Should have thrown his bullpen in game 5 and saved Stottlemyre for game 6.
@@5280mminnick 2006 and 2011 were even better years and they barely got into the playoffs both years. 2011 was amazing; 9 1/2 games out of the wild card in late August, down 2-0 to the favored Phillies in the 1st round, down to their final strike TWICE in game 6. Came back to win it all.
I was 12. That was a long night after the Braves blitzed the Cards in the first and then seeing 18 year old Andruw Jones hit a homer later..I definitely cried that night...
Man does this take me back to my early childhood, I was all of 6 years old in 1996 and I have faint memories of my dad taking my older sister and myself to the games via tickets he got from his boss. Be it along the first/third base line, or when we got really lucky, the green seats. Baseball at Busch always had this "larger than life" coliseum vibe, because it was completely enclosed. Yes, it falls under that cookie cutter dynamic that was popular during the 60's - 80's, but I loved that stadium, as did pretty much all of St. Louis.
Terrific season with sad ending. Will never forget Dmitiri Young's 3B in game 4 -- one of all-time Cards highlights. If not for Lankford's end-of-season injury, Cards might have beat the Braves and Yanks.
The DeWitt's fell ass backwards into an ATM......Granted they have made a lot of great decisions since then but......let's be honest...they hit the jackpot....frist McGwire...then Pujols comes around......
No one expected them to do anything before the season started, so going ahead 3-1 against the "Team of The 90's" was quite an accomplishment. No team had ever come back from 3-1 down in the NLCS until this series, either, so it's unfair to say that, as well.

SO TRUE. I love revisiting this season. A great facelift for our old gal Bush and and a fresh revamp for the Redbirds. What a year.

He could have started Alan benes in game 5 and Todd in game six on regular rest. But like gaetti said, the Braves were the better team.
Me and my father were at the game reds number was retired
Ozzie's my idol, but I loved watching that outfield trio. Lankford, Gant and Jordan could flat out play.
i cried my eyes out after game 7 nlcs. but thanks, this video was awesome!
You aren't alone. What a disappointing ending to a great season.

HOLY CRAP, BLESS YOU. I have this VHS somewhere in a box that I can't find at the moment.
I always hated that Brian Jordan decided to move back home. I think he could have been one of the greatest Cardinals.
Even though the cardinals didn’t build on this success it was indicative that ownership was committed to winning. Took ten years but we got it done !
Did the Cardinals really steal the Mets slogan from a decade earlier?
RIP Nan Wyatt

Blowing a 3-1 lead in the NLCS is “baseball like it oughta be”? Hilarious
