To be of any use, you will need to mine enough iron ore to craft an anvil for adding those book enchants to items and combining enchants on items. And name tags also come from fishing (as well as dungeon loot), so if you have an animal you want to ensure it does not despawn, use anvil to put a name on the name tag and right-click the animal. Caution fishing the shore of the ocean at night, since drowned love throwing tridents at you. I put a stop to that by building a 'pier' 6 blocks above the water; and I use a boat to collect the experience every 10 minutes or so. Mending on your fishing rod will help ensure you can fish as long as you like; although, your inventory tends to fill with random items, so I put 4x large storage, a furnace, and crafting table next to me on the pier.

fishing doesn't provide xp as quickly as an xp farm would, but yeah that would also be an option
